My exhaust heat shield is starting to rust. Right now it's mainly around the bolts, but also along some of the edge. The car only has 30k miles and has an under shield, so I'm surprised it's rusted to the point that it has. It looks a bit like this picture, though along the entire heat shield.
I want to take it off and paint it, but I'm not entirely sure what paint to use. How hot does the heat shield get at a maximum? Header paint would certainly work, but the curing process is a slight pain. There is another pain that's good up to about 500F that doesn't require the same kind of curing.
I was also thinking of trying rust converter or rust dissolver. Would any of these work as opposed to spray painting? I'll have to check again tomorrow, but when I first looked it almost seemed like galvanized metal.
>tldr what's the best way to paint a rusting exhaust heat shield?
Do you live in a climate where they salt the roads in the winter?

Yes. I do have an under guard so whatever is getting in there is minimal ad through the grille.
That corroded and broken ground strap is a bigger issue. However, there is paint that can withstand high heat.
Amendment: Best bet might be to purchase a new heat shield then protect it with a high temp paint. That's my two cents for what they're worth.
Oh, that isn't the actual heat shield. Sorry.

I think there are 6 pieces to the heat shield and it would come to about $400 or so. I'd like to fix this the right way with the right paint and make it last a good while longer.

Not my car though where the strap connects to my heat shield it's all rusted. What gauge stranded wire would be a good replacement for the cable strap that's almost identical to the one in the pic?

Need to keep the underside of your car rinsed off and/or get some sort of rustproof undercoating applied. Or watch the salt eat your car from the bottom up.

>only has 30k miles
Shit's fucked yo. Take it to the dealer for a warranty repair.

I do this think it's covered unless it's rusted completely through and there is a hole

Hard to tell from the photo, but measure the diameter of the crimped end, then go a gauge or two bigger than that. No such thing as too big of a ground strap.
