Lot C: Projects that don't run but have potential to be something great again.1k-4k

trying my hardest to get my falcon to DD status, its going but there only so much I can do as a Classic car noob and only so many hours a research I can put in a day. Thats and I have 170 inline 6, know clue as to how the 8s acts.
>>
>>17412726
It depends on the vehicle, age, wear, and level of restoration done already. A high mileage rustbucket that has only seen the cheapest bare minimum of repairs to run will be awful, but something in nice shape with fresh good quality wear items and things that commonly go bad replaced will be much better.
>>
>>17412726
They were used as DDs back when they were new... why not again?

All you have to do is get it back to that point, fix the shit that needs to be fixed, tune it so its happy... I recently replaced my starter with a mini high torque one because it wouldn't start reliably on hot days. Now it does. I have another car with A/C that i'll use for sitting in traffic, but when i want to go get lunch or something, i take the mustang.
>>
>>17412726
I've done it before and it's great on nice days but when the weather turns and you get yourself into some tougher situations, say pouring rain in a tight freeway construction zone in the dark, you'll find yourself appreciating how much easier new cars make that sort of thing.

I've dd'd my truck. It wasn't the best, but it's feasible.
>>
>>17412726
I dd'ed them before anyone called them classics, though I prefer trucks and motorcycles.

No big deal if you do a thorough job inspecting them and performing preventive maintenance like belt, battery cables, ignition parts and hose replacement. Don't be intimidated by carbs and if in doubt install a new or remanufactured carb. They are so relatively inexpensive nowadays I gave away my large stash of Holley 4bbls and parts to my bro.

Important tip is ONLY use "fuel injection hose" to replace old rubber fuel lines. The lesser shit sold today is rapidly destroyed by ethanol in fuel and isn't high quality because fuel injection hose is the high quality alternative.
>>
>>17412804
Modern fuel hose is a must. Also not letting your vehicle sit as well. I let my Ford sit for a year and the carb got pretty gunked up. Ethanol is no joke, but if you drive it regularly year round you'll have less problems

Whichever anon was lecturing me about the carter BBD, you were right, I misunderstood what you were saying. I didn't realize the Weber 38 was a direct upgrade to the carter, designed to replace it. Since the /6 came with the carter I'll just use that intake mani and start searching for a 38. Anyone selling?

>>
>>17412962
Weber 38 isn't a direct bolt on.
You're going to need a fuel pressure regulator, 3-4 psi works best for 38's based on internet experience.

you need a kit to actually let it bolt onto a super six manifold.
https://www.webercarbsdirect.com/100-611-p/100.611.htm

I highly recommend you buy this though.
http://www.morris4x4center.com/weber-carburetor-kit-38mm-dgas-k55138.html

tuning a Weber can be a maddening experience for a newbie though, you should definitely get the Haynes manual for Weber carbs.

You will also need to fabricate the entire kickdown linkage and at the bare minimum use that Mr.Gasket throttle cable kit.

Frankly, the BBD is an absolutely fine carburetor and does it's job well.
$/hp upgrades, the dutra duals can't be beat and you will never actually take advantage of a weber 38 without a cam upgrade and a bump in compression.
>>
>>17413001
thanks breh
>>17412816
Isn't the ethanol content less with 92 octane, which is what you should run in older motors anyway? I could be totally wrong
>>17413002
>the BBD is fine
lel, that's what I said yesterday, and someone said it was a piece of shit. I did read on slantsix.org that the super six mani and Carter are a direct bolt on if you only have the 1 bbl, which is what attracted me to it
>>
I've got a bone stock Chevy 350

All stock accessories and AC, what's the cheapest way to get power?

I'd assume moving to electric accessories (fan, pump..), better flowing headers, maybe a cam and rebuild.. what else?
>>
>>17413024
Np breh, I'll stand behind national carb's, my Q-jet was top fucking tier from those guys, didn't need to adjust anything once I bolted it on.
>>
>>17413002
Also your trip is pretty ironic, but I'm assuming the Morris kit is complete and doesn't require anything else besides the regulator? Also, isn't a regulator a fairly simple inline part? I'll definitely buy the Haynes manual if I buy the Weber.

Last thing: from pictures it looks like the super six intake bolts directly to the exhaust manifold. If I'm using headers, it shouldn't be a problem to leave these bolts unused, right?
>>
>>17413034
Cam, headers, edlebrock 1405 carb with dual plane intake, keep a manual water pump and go to electric fans, if you need the extra amperage either go with a CS series alt and the adapter to plug it into old school harnesses or an 84 or 85 iirc camaro alternator since you can find the 12si's from those up to 103 amps or something.

Of course, if you aren't doing the rebuild/cam and whatnot yourself, a crate 350 is $1500, the high performance crate 350 that makes even more power is something like $2100.
>>
>>17413024
Anonymous vs. everyone who's owned a Slant Six?
Unfortunately nobody who has put a Weber 38 has referenced the jet sizes they've used so you'll also need to buy a jet kit.
I'm not sure how cost effective a super six swap is compared to what slant six articles say but it's an excellent upgrade.

Just make sure you find a Weber 38 that isn't a Chinese clone, something to keep in mind is that Weber hasn't made a carburetor since 1992, so whatever brand new shiny thing you find on ebay is a cheap clone.
>>17413043
>Also your trip is pretty ironic
It's what Alphonse copy/pastes when he gets btfo.

the regulator is inline, it might take a little bit of plumbing but it shouldn't be complicated.
http://www.webercarbsdirect.com/Fuel-Pump-Regulator-s/331.htm

you'll most likely need a jet kit like this
http://www.lceperformance.com/Weber-38-DGAS-Carburetor-Jet-Kit-Performance-p/1035006.htm
and the time, patience, and sanity to get it tuned just right.

>If I'm using headers, it shouldn't be a problem to leave these bolts unused, right?
Most likely, the super six manifold on the engine side is exactly the same as the 1 barrel manifold.

Also stay clear of Holley 1920s.
>>

Fucking citrustrip is a total joke.

Here's the thing, it takes SOOOo long, that your total exposure to the VOC makes it actually more harmful in the long run than using a proper remover based on Methylene Chloride

Use pic related, brush on, wait 15 minutes, keep it wet and viola... basically wipe off with green scotch brite and putty knives. wear good ass gloves and a respirator.

I scrub with a natural bristle wheel brush once its started bubbling, then the shit slides right off onto the waiting cadrboard below.

Afterwards, wipe it down with plenty of acetone, and you'll have a 99% bare metal hood, no wire wheel required.

or stop being so poorfag and geta a media blaster from harbor frieght for a couple hundred bucks

One of the Best mods you'll ever do is converting to HEI (GM style) ignition.

Okay I'm at a loss. How the fuck do I get this alternator bracket repaired? I went to a junk yard and by sheer luck I found an old Iron Duke on a pick up bed with a bunch of other engines. Started bolting the bracket off but one of the other engines was pushing the bracket in couldn't get it out fast enough. Then a short piece of shit mexican comes out and says all the engines are his and that he buys them bulk.

Called a bunch of welding shops but they all said they don't weld aluminum. I don't even know if it's aluminum but magnets won't stick to it. I think it's cracked all the way through but the alternator is held in place somehow. It rattles like a motherfucker tho. Should I just drive the thing like this and worry about it when something breaks? Have tried ebay and cannot find it anywhere.

Currently trying to talk myself out of buying this 1965 Volvo 122S (Amazon). I need a DD, but the practicality of bringing this up to a standard that will pass an inspection is daunting.

Pros:
-Comes with a metric ton of spare parts, including an entire set of trim
-Complete
-Not rusted in the usual spots
-Was completely redone underneath in 2001, new brake and fuel lines, new steering gear, new ball joints

Cons:
-Out of state/province car; will need to pass an inspection
-Has odd rust underneath in the rear frame rails and transmission crossmember mounts.
-Weird surface rust underneath caused by undercoating
-Runs like garbage (arguably a pro, since I dickered the price down because of it and it's just in need of a carb rebuild.

Earlier I saw an El Camino (or Ranchero?) pull into the restaurant next to my work, I think it was one of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard. It had a super loud rumbling idle, I thought it was just some pickup truck. Then it fuckin roared going down the street when it was leaving. I live in a rust state so I don't see too many muscle cars besides old corvettes or really old pickup truck so it's kind of a treat.
And to think these kind of eargasmic sounds were commonplace back in the day. New cars sound like vacuum cleaners now.

I wouldn't plan on this being a dependable dd for at least a year, depending on how quickly you identify and fix problems. Rust on structural components is not a good sign, there could be more than you're seeing. If its been restored cheaply, there could be hidden problems that you may not discover for years. If you were to buy this car, I would recommend having an alternate form of transport

t. dding a rolling mechanical restoration. My car had a solid frame and body, replaced all suspension, rear end, various odds and ends. If you really love the car, go for it, but be prepared for a lot of pain and inconvenience

What does /ccg/ think about dropping newer non-stock engines into classic cars?
I have a 1982 FJ60 which is a total dog with it's 2F engine. It only makes 130ish horsepower, and I live in a state with high altitude mountain passes, and it's not fun to have to constantly sit in the right lane. I was thinking about dropping a 5.3 chevy V8 into it mating it to a NV4500 transmission.
Or should I fuck with trying to polish a turd and try to squeeze more power out of the 2F? I've heard of people adding turbos to them and just running a small amount of boost, basically altitude compensation. I don't know how well the engine would do under those loads though. It's basically a reversed engineered GMC 235 stovebolt and I know the old timers used to hotrod those motors a lot before v8s came along.

>>17427430
Well what would be something preferable as a "first project" to prepare me for restoring a Spitfire? Again, I already have access to the car (was muh momma's) so it's not like I have to account for the cost of the car itself into my budget.

>>17427434
Pic related. It's basically been sitting in a driveway, the frame mounted on wood blocks for the past ~30 years. I mean I live in the southwest so it's not like it's seen a lot of moisture, but it has seen moisture in the past 30 years. I can make a giant list of things I kno will need to be checked or replaced right off the bat, and it's a soft top so there's another headache to put on the list.
>>
>>17427452
Anything American with a large aftermarket, usually things like a mustang or Chevelle or old pickup are easiest. Things that where popular in your domestic market are easiest.

You have the car, but how fucked is it? Why was it parked?

Don't know, going to have to find out. I don't have my grubby mitts on the car yet, it's on the other side of town at my grandparents while I'm living with some roommates in an apartment. Honestly have been a little scared to open the hood because I'm 100% certain some spiders have made their home all over the inside of it and im a little bitch when it comes to spiders.

What sort of domestic specifically would you recommend I look at if I wanted to prepare myself for restoring that inline 4, though? An old mustang, or a chevy s-10 truck or something?

A corvair would be your cheapest/easiest first resto job.
Next cheapest/easiest would be anything made by AMC
Old darts you could also get for cheap

Don't touch anything from Europe if you want easy. It's like they tried to make cars as meaninglessly complicated and expensive as possible.

Something like this. As long as it runs and has a drivetrain with a solid following you'll be fine.

Corvair would not be a great choice in AZ. Air cooling and 115 degree heat don't mix.

That's not a 64, it's a 62 they changed the suspention in 64. 62 is one of my favorite years but 500$ for a roller is a little much. A 65-68 has the more desirable suspention. Cost estimate for a running corvair that is not a Spyder would be around 2-3k.
Check for rust behind the back right tire that should tell you how far gone the car is. You live in the desert so I think you can find some nice vairs.

Foreign classics probably aren't your best friend for a beginner project. Get a domestic. Trucks are really easy because you don't even need jacks to pull a transmission or crawl under it, and extra space to do everything. Parts are dirt cheap because there are more trucks thab muscle cars. Most small parts like switches and stuff are under 20 dollars for my Bronco. Hell the ignition computer was 30 dollars, in stock at the local parts store.

So the truck and tractor show started off with lots of rain. There were like 5 pickups there, 30 or so big trucks, and a single, lonely tractor that I didn't see anyone look at the whole time I was there.

Next to me was a real nice restored 56 Ford F100, I swear my truck got way more attention. Weird how people just love beat up old trucks.

I forgot to add, Is this fan deep enough in the shroud? Also If i do need a spacer I'll probably have to get new studs and I might need them anyway because They barley let the nut onto it. Tomorrow I'll take the washers out from between the clutch and pulley and see if that helps give some more room for the nut to fully thread.

Hey trans am kun sorry to say that's fucked up big-time. You should have at least two belts and three if you have air.
The first belt closest to the engine should be crank, fan, power steering. Make sure that's tight than put on the second belt going crank fan alternator. Tighten that then if you have air conditioning it goes crank fan air.
Your fan should also not have any spacers and is too far back.
I just took a picture of a 403 in one of the cars (without ac) to try and show you.
Also take a pic of your shaker something is bugging me.

>>
>>17430063
damn, I got to looking at it and I don't think I can fit another belt to reach just the alternator. The alternator bracket seems to be one off of an olds cutlass and there is almost no room between the power steering pump and water pump pulley to get a single belt to the alternator. I wonder why they did it this way also it's lasted me a while and doesn't tear up the belt or squeal. Here's a pic of my shaker, sometime I'll modify an air cleaner that will let it work with my holley but the original owner just affixed it (poorly) to the hood.

That privelage is reserved for me.

I've always been partial to Ford because I like their styling. GM parts are probably just as cheap and both are pretty similar in reliability/parts availability for the era. Chrysler/Dodge parts are going to be more expensive and possibly harder to find.

>>17429745
Well Cutlass said it's all fucked, but in my opinion, with shit that old, if it works it works. *shrug*. At least until you can find the parts to set it up properly. Of course I don't take that approach to customer's cars, but occasionally I rig my own shit.

It looks bolted but it's not, the original owner affixed it to the hood with these metal strips that are welded to the hood, you can see it at the back of the shaker.
I knew someone would say something sooner or later but the original owner probably didn't know about the difference in stickers lol after I get everything mechanical fixed my dad is going to repaint it and I'll put the correct decals on. anyway, So now I need to shim the alternator to line it up and add the belt that goes from the crank pulley to the waterpump and then to the power steering pump. But I keep the belt I already have going from the water pump, alternator and on the inner groove on the power steering pump pulley, correct? Also by any chance do you know what size belts I need for that? Anyway, thanks for the help, I'm still learning as I go.

I do need new seats for it, the shitty racing bucket seats are not comfortable and the original owner's home made brackets that affix them to the floor are probably not the safest. http://i.imgur.com/IpLPibV.jpg Sorry about how dirty the carpet is since it is a DD it does get a bit dirty but other than that it's got a really clean interior.

I'd suggest you avoid using rustoleum as it has no UV protection.
If you are looking for cheap protection I suggest you take a look at 2k industrial paints/primers which are marine and industrial graded (I think PPG produces those paints? )They cost little more than Rustoleum and have better results, UV protection and will last longer, not to mention they are extra resistant to rust ( I can't remember the name of paint itself, I think it's italian made). Also the paint is resistant to vibrations and if you have thin sheet metal like I do, then the color won't brake so easily.
Also anybody looking for underside protection I suggest noxyde from rustoleum, I've tried it on my car and it holds better than bitumen spray coat.
Also be careful when using paint guns, they have ignition temps and you don't want to light yourself on fire, I also suggest you rent a compressor and hvlp gun and be done with it in 2 days, you'll get better finish and won't risk setting things on fire or having to dilute the paint so much.

The XJ looked nice but how many AMC-era XJ's do you see on the road these days? None, they're almost all Chrysler units. AMC's cars were always garbage in terms of reliability. And most of them were pretty damn ugly too.
>>
>>17431997
You don't see many because they were only made for like what, 4 or 5 years? I still see them regularly though.
>>
>>17432007
Four years, actually. XJ came out in '84, Chrysler bought AMC in '87 so their influence probably hit in '88. How do you know the ones you see are AMC-era? They are most likely Chrysler-era as they really didn't change the cosmetics until '97.

Headlights. I see those first gen headlight surrounds all the time. Though they could be a little later

Just finishing up my LT1 swapped RX7 build. It's not super classic, but it's there. I feel like showing off because I'm damn proud of how it's coming along.

Using other companies parts is super common. Chrysler didn't even make their own carbs. Ford used Hydramatics before Borg Warner developed their automatics. GM didn't make their own wheels
>>
>>17432600
pretty sure GM was the only company that owned a carburetor manufacturer
>>
>>17432618
Ford made carbs under the Autolite name when they owned the rights

Then, also factor in that I'm a teenfag who accomplished it in my parents garage with a limited tool set, and I'd have to pat myself on the back and say I did a thing that most men can't do.

I didn't have an extra jack to drop the transmission onto, so I literally rolled under it on the creeper and lowered it down onto my stomach using my hands and feet then proceeded to wiggle out from under the car with a transmission crushing my ribcage.

The things you do for your car.
>>
>>17432637
Good for you man. Those things are a mother fuck to work on.

You're telling me. I forgot to mention that I also changed the rod bearings. I had to basically disassemble the whole front end of the car. It was hell. They make them as difficult to work on as possible, yet they're still easier to work on than anything newer than 2005.

I'm currently in the process of changing 2 collapsed lifters (probably the easiest thing I've done so far). Of course, instead of having a normal valve cover, Porsche made the camshaft built into the cover and your lifters are up instead of down, making pulling them out an unnecessarily difficult task.

It causes me physical and emotional pain.

I'm guessing that milk jug is your coolant overflow? Oreillys sells universal coolant overflow tanks for like $12, that's what my bronco has on it.

Well it runs and drives, looks like it's altogether and not rusted out. What's got you worried?

Good on ya mate, keep it up. You are a much braver man than I was as a teen. I wouldn't have gotten into a complicated car like that. Sounds like you're managing alright though.

I am managing it and thank you! It's very difficult to work on it, but the payoff is so worth it. It's such a fun car to drive, though the attention it gets can be both awesome and annoying.

I am starting to get the feeling some one is after my falcon, I found the cover off of the car again for the 2nd time in 2 weeks. I think he checking in every so often seeing what I have done to it, waiting to see how far I get with and then steal it. And its been happening around the same time both times. On top of that some one stole our lawn mower about a week before we found the cover like this.

first car, 87 cutlass supreme

dad bought it on the condition i learned how to fix it and work on cars..

so far ive swapped the bench seat out for buckets, next will be adding the centre console / gear shift cus i hate it on steering column.. umm

needs some mechanical shit done to it.. will post later if anyone is at all interested

have never worked on cars before

just bicycles and iphones
>>
>>17434528
The fact that you found a malaise era Cutlass that hasn't been completely raped by hispanics or blax is absurd. I highly recommend you keep it for life.
Also put a 500 Cadillac in it.
>>
>>17434551

>malaise era?
whats that

but yeah i know people like to jack em up putting 20 inch rims on the lawn mowa etc etc

haha thatd be wild, if i could find one.

but uh i might just put this thing into decent shape then sell it and buy another classic

fixing cars is turning out to be kind of shitty but fun in a real sucky way, having to bubba shit and figure out what the fuck the last owner did to it etc is a headache all around but call me a sadist its been entertaining

It's all still torn apart right now, interior is not worth looking at, but here's a quick pic I snapped. It's been a slow process. And it's cost more money than I wanted, but it's worth it.
