Why isn't the 3.5 Ecoboost an inline 6? Wouldn't that

Why isn't the 3.5 Ecoboost an inline 6? Wouldn't that make more sense as a 'truck engine'. More torque down low and arguably a better sound. Ford would've also gotten a LOT less shit and possibly more sales because 'Cummins are inline 6, so obviously the 3.5 I6 must be good too'. Space wouldn't really be an issue either because it's a truck.

Can any mechanics/engineers explain why they didn't go I-6 for the ecoboost?

The 3.5 EcoBoost is in more than just the F150. Taurus & explorer both share the same 3.5 as the F150 but its mounted transversely. It's impractical to design a transverse I6 (inb4 Volvo). Basically it all comes down to packaging.

That's the only way you can get torque and HP out of a tiny engine without massive turbo lag.

Packaging, a V6 will fit into small spaces that and inline 6 can't.
Also, an Inline six doesnt inherently have more torque than any other configuration, it's just that for every mm of bore you add to an Inline 6, the overall length increases 6mm so after a point, manufacturers have to rely on stroke to hit the displacement and and power goals. Longer stroke means lower RPM, so the motors tend to be tuned for low RPM torque instead of top end power.

this isnt even close to true. if this were the case every single semi in the world would be v6 instead of inline 6.

its only packaging, its much easier to fit a v6 into any vehicle, fwd or rwd rather than a long I6.
