Hey /o/

Any recommendations for a first car? Something good for a daily driver, to go to work and school. Both manual or Auto would be fine though I'd lean towards a manual.

A family friend recommended me a Toyota Camry between 2000 to 2005 as those on Craigslist fit my budget of about 3.5k
any thoughts?

If you get a V6 camry. The 1MZ-FE engine used in them has a couple problems.

>Valve cover gaskets will probably need replaced
>Notorious for oil consumption and sludging due to poor oil port design
>It is a complete and total cunt to change the spark plugs
>Even worse to change the valve cover gaskets (Took me 2 straight days to do)
>IAC valves are really iffy and like to stick after a while, but easy to rebuild
>Valve seals probably wont last past 150K

On the flipside:
>Engine bay is somewhat roomy and easy to do basic stuff on
>Decent power, torque, and milage all around for a DD
>The automatic tranny is unkillable if fluids are changed every 30K
>Engine itself is quite reliable, but eats oil like crummy eats shit after spinning out at 5mph
>Cooling system except for the heater core is piss easy to fix
>Electronics are rock solid

If you go to buy one OP and see some sludge under the oil cap RUN. I don't mean blown head gasket milkshake, more like a darker brown molasses.

If you see some caked on oil residue on the outside of the engine stray away unless its under a grand. Have fun replacing those gaskets.

dont get a v6

get a 4cyl japanese car

corolla, camry, accord etc

learn to change your own oil and brakepads and stuff on it

take everything you learned from that car and apply it to the next car you buy. keep buying japanese cars until you know what you're doing and then the only real limitations will be your budget
