There is none, utterly pointless in any car designed in the last 50 years.

In a non-syncronized transmission double clutching made the gears speed up or slow down, depending on whether your up or down shifting, so that they would mesh nicely. So no grinding gears. If your good with a crash box you can finesse it while up shifting as everything is slowing down and not have to double clutch, but down shifting it's a requirement to not grind gears.
well, you do it to not blow the welds of intakes usually. and to prevent granny shift syndrome.

There is still a point, it doesn't wear your synchromesh and some people find it makes their downshifts smoother.
