Redpill me on engine oil, /o. Is it another (((merchant))) scheme to liberate goyim of their shekels? Does it really make any difference what kind of oil you use (provided it has viscosity recommended by the manual) if you change it at regular intervals?

If you live in super cold climates where cheap oil is like taffy. Or have a flat tappet cam and cheap oil with no zinc
It doesn't matter what you do.
>>17322083
api rated oil will have a base certain amount of detergents and stuff in it
manufacturers themselves can alter these amounts granted it doesn't exceed any limits
for example if you have a older style roller cam you will need a ZDDP additive because API standards don't allow for enough of it.
Oil weights are oil weights, they vary a bit when hot but the real difference is how they behave cold. Walmart oils at -40C will be a solid brick, while Mobil and RP will flow albeit like molasses.
SAE vs Synthetic. SAE deteriorates faster and can cause more buildup if not changed regularly. That's it.The myth of not using synthetic on high mileage cars is a load of shit. The way I see it, if you have a leak being sealed by oil deposits that got cleaned up by the detergents in a better oil, you always had that leak.
I believe Mobil 1 is one of the better oils.
Royal Purple is a meme but it is pretty good too.
Your oil filter matters more.
>OP's pic is a Toyota 1mz-fe, notorious for that problem
>my avalon has that engine
>remember that you have to change oil at 5k every time or else pic related will happen
>at 8k after last oil change
Thanks for the reminder, OP.

Wait, I'm retarded, that's clearly not a V6, oh well still reminded me that I'm about to get fucked.

>Walmart SuperTech Master Race
Twice I have let my car go 14000 km without changing, pennzoil.
>>17322083
Literally doesn't matter. Synthetic is better suited for extreme cold but the difference is negligible. Petroleum oil is insanely cheaper. Most racers run petroleum due to frequency of changes
>>17322083
If you are doing regular changes, chances are something else non-oil related (accident, transmission, head gasket, timing belt/chain, etc) is going to kill your car before something oil related (bearings, rings etc.)
Unless you have a turbo or special use case, Mobil1 vs. Wal-mart oil is going to be difference between the engine taking a shit at 250k miles vs. 270 k miles.

whats the cause on the toyota? lack of oil cooler?
>>17322288
Honestly I have no clue. I've lurked on Toyota forums and even asked Toyota techs.
The 1mz just sludges the fuck up.
>>17322083
Just buy supertech at based walmart and pick up some brewskies while you're at it.

>if you have a leak being sealed by oil deposits that got cleaned up by the detergents in a better oil, you always had that leak.
No I didn’t, as it was plugged up
>Supertech master race
The walmart synthetic oils are a lot better than people credit them for. Many used oil analysis postings from various cars proves it.
>>17322363
There was a class action lawsuit about oil gelling in the 1MZ engines
>>17322484
I suck at lurking

Right there, damn. Thanks for that, TIL.
It doesn't matter at all unless your engine has variable valve timing. VVT engines are supper sensitive to shitty oil.
>>17322530
God damn thats terrible. Toyota sure has a lot of shitty stuff. Early 90's tacoma frames were the worst
>>17322153
Are Fram oil filters still crap?
