Why did Mazda use a 2.5 Liter four cylinder engine in the Mazda3 series? That level of displacement is not only unusually high from Mazda but also in the context of a four cylinder engine. Mazda is known for being a weird company but what possible reasoning could they have had for this?

they worked with ferd on the motor. 2.0 N/A wasn't really enough for the midsize sedans of which it was initially designed for so they upsized the Duratec.
The 2.5 in the Mazda 3 was a premium option.

I don't know about that. Chrysler and GM both had 2.5's for many years. The latter even went up to 3 litres, IIRC. I consider 2.5 to be the limit, and any displacement above that should be a V6. And anything above 4.5 should be a V8.

It's not that remarkable. Plenty of heavier cars with 4 cylinders are over 2 liters
mazda isn't on the turbo train like every other manufacturer but they still want to offer a "sporty" version of their mazda3.
sadly it's way overpriced with the 2.5 option. starts at $24.2k and only 184 hp. I drove a 2.0 and a 2.5l and they are both anemic compared to the competition these days, it's really no wonder that Mazda is doing poorly.

"For a 4 cylinder" you busriding autist.

In North America a 4 cylinder with a displacement above 2 litres isn't out of the ordinary at all. In fact it's becoming the norm nowadays as the government makes delightful contradictions in the form of "cars have to be able to survive 9/11" and "cars must get at least X amount of MPG or else you have to pay a hippie-hater tax!"

Quality post
Mazda continues to be weird by not using turbos like everyone else, and instead going with these super high compression petrol engines.
They're doing the same sort of thing in reverse on the diesel side by using weirdly low compression.

You forgot 2.5 is a decent size v6 for the europoors

thinking of buying a mazda 3 sport. I want a new car, I want wagon, and starting <20k is hard to beat
what does displacement mean
