I am an emergency 911 dispatcher for Police, Fire and EMS response.

AMA

don't fall asleep, nigger
>>
hi fellow phone operator. I am a crisis counselor on a suicide prevention hotline.
>>
>>17277885
how often do walking stereotypes call? ie: niggers calling because a nigger shot another nigger
>>
>>17277903
go on /r9k/ and do an AMA

PLEASE

Fuck you,
I know there's a unit closer
I know I shouldn't be going priority for 35 minutes
I know that this person with "foot pain" isn't short of breath and doesn't need me to go priority
I know that lunch break is optional but if you don't give it to us were gonna spend 40 minutes at the hospital eating

Sincerely EMT
>>
>>17277920
Why do EMTs ever go on highways in the city? Is that just how the spacing of amberlamps works?
>>
>>17277903
Greetings fellow operator. What's that like? What are the req's?

>>17277907
Too often. To be honest gang violence is rare as opposed to domestic violence and drug busts.

>>17277920
Roger that. I am not going to call priority on bullshit desu, but I know dispatchers that like to make a scene. Local EMT units are all only on call anyway, we don't idle our 500's.
>>
>>17277997
I have no fucking clue what you're saying
>>17278002
You're a saint. What state you work in?
>>
>>17278029
I've always questioned why Ambulances need to go on freeways / highways when they're in the city to go towards a location. Is that just due to a sudden spike in traumas in the area or bad managing of EMT spread?

Have you ever driven on the highway without attending to an accident on the highway?
>>
>>17278002
can you tell us a story about a 911 call with a nigger stereotype?
>>
>>17278070
just go on /pol/ you fucking degenerate

no I just wanted a funny 911 story. My sister used to be an EMT, so I've had my fair share of EMT stories

i sort of feel like AMA's are reddit tier. i don't know if I'd make one myself. i don't think there's anything too remarkable about it.

>>17278002
being a crisis counselor is interesting. I work on the overnight shift.

the term "crisis" is contextual because a crisis for one person is a walk in the park for another. sometimes I wish we explicitly operationalized the term.

that being said, it's fun and rewarding, but i think it is easy to become jaded quickly. you begin to develop a "problem-solver" method of thinking too, somewhere along your time on. some people like to just talk Ad nauseam about their problems and never solve and indulge in the "woe is me" lifestyle. after a few months, you start to approach a lot of things in life with a destination in mind.

and yes, at some point you will get a call with somebody who has a gun pointed to their head and wants you to talk them down.
>>
>>17278029
Cheers. I live in Colorado.
>>
>>17278070
No. I've never had one that amounted to anything story worthy.

Have you ever successfully talked someone down?
Has someone ever pulled the trigger on you?
>>
>>17278111
any story worthy calls then?
>>
>>17278100
DESU I wouldn't usually make an AMA on /o/ but I had a few requests so here we are.

It sounds like what we do. Lots of jaded folks, countless folks just looking to yammer, lonely people, and rarely a crisis.
>>
>>17278100
It's not really remarkable but I'd like to hear from you. Anyone ever call in suicidal because they can't stop thinking every waking moment? heh.
>>
>>17277885

Have you ever heard someone die
>>
>>17277896
>there is only one dispatcher.
>>
>>17278119
Ah yeah. Stand by for a longer post. Maybe two if I am in the mood.
>>
>>17278065
Yes all the time. Usually it's bad coverage and not enough people working that day. Although sometimes it is an accident on the freeway. Also usually don't go lights and sirens on freeway cause people go full retard. 60 is fast enough.
>>17278105
Ahhh nice place

>>
>>17277997

It's like you never went to work at the same time like everyone else before.

Anyone know why random words in my posts keep turning into "DESU" after I press submit?

yes, i've talked a few people down.

no, i've never had someone pull the trigger while on a call. we also conduct follow-ups with people who are deemed "high-risk," and all of my follow-ups have gone through, meaning they didn't off themselves afterwards either.

that being said, one of the most important things to remember is that you're responsible to the caller, not FOR the caller. if you do your job and stick to your training and try to be genuine, there isn't much else you can do, barring getting enough info out of a caller to get EMS to arrive at the caller's location.

>>17278132
yeah, i think there are some similarities amongst operators. I love making 911 calls or getting follow-up calls from police/ems because they're such bros.

>>17278135
are you asking for yourself? to answer your question though, yes. we get calls like that every night. the first thing i'd do is try to understand the person's context - how their daily life is, etc.

>>17278141
not yet. maybe one day. i've heard someone cum though lol.
>>
>>17278148
>Also usually don't go lights and sirens on freeway

How do people go full retard? 60 kmph or 60 mi?
>>
>>17278065
Nearest hospital to some towns is a freeway drive away.

That's the most common killer among the black population in America according to a black preacher no less
It's just so fucked, and when someone wants to get out of the hood and make a life for themselves other gangbangers in the neighbourhood will hound them down and guilt trip them with shit like how they're turning their backs on his brothers and sisters or how the guy thinks he's better than them
>>
>>17278167

You're much stronger mentally than I could ever be.

>>
>>17278173
In some towns, sure. But my city has 37 urgent care centres that will take you during the day yet I see amberlamps on the highway quite frequently getting on and off on-ramps during non-traffic (so no collisions as I can tell)

>>17278184
thank you for that. those are kind words. i honestly believe that anyone can be prepared to do any job with enough exposure and preparation, provided the person isn't mentally challenged in any way. i think you could do it if you wanted to. they're always looking too because the burnout rate is so high and the attrition rates from training groups are astronomical lol.

>>17278216
time flies by on those calls. i had a 2 and a half hour conversation with a high-risk caller. him and i even talked about our favorite cars during the conversation, which was definitely memorable.

>>17278221
bachelor's minimum was needed. i have a BA in forensic psych. 21/hr starting. pretty ok. no psych review for us. apparently there is a background check but there are folks here with several misdemeanors. i think it's necessary to have people with some marks on their record because how is someone with a squeaky clean life ever going to truly empathize with someone who has committed crimes?

>>17278230
we get TONS of non-mental health related calls. many of these calls are people looking to jerk off. maybe 1-3% of our callers are females looking to orgasm too. there is a caller who will bring himself right to the point of cumming and then blow his load as soon as someone connects on the other line because he otherwise gets disconnected on within a few seconds. that's dedication lol.

i have been asked out by quite a few callers, both male and female. some of those calls are pretty funny and flattering, but you'd be stupid to take these people up on their offers, no matter how tempting it may be.
>>
>>17278268
How casually do you talk to the callers?
It seems like the operators are always reading from a script (yes I've called before) and it seems like you'd have better results if you would like loosen up and talk casually to them.
Like do you ever get to say fuck to them?
I'd listen more to someone who said like "everyone fucks things up" than someone who said like "All people make mistakes now and again"

>>
>>17278287
i curse on the lines with callers and i haven't received a negative review yet. you'd have to use your discretion though - you wouldn't curse with a 65 y/o sweet old lady who is lonely at 2am, but you could with a younger person. basically, i'll wait for them to curse first, then i'll meet them somewhere close to where they're at in terms of slang.

i get what you're saying though. some people adhere strictly to a script and it's really hard to foster a connection that way because you end up sounding like a robot. some people avoid it because it's easy to lose boundaries between a counselor and caller that way too, and that isn't a good thing.
>>
>>17277903

I know a 4th year student who was doing it for one of her classes, person shot themself on the phone in her first week. Kinda fucked her up.

yeah i know earlier i mentioned that anyone could be trained to do the job provided they had enough exposure and training, and i think that's what happens when you're not adequately prepared.

there are some people working at this job who are total softies. one counselor broke down into tears because she got so triggered by a conversation a buddy and myself were having which included us joking about death.

not the best choice of job field to go into if you're sensitive.

Why do your norwegian colleagues feel the need to treat me like I'm a fucking child if I'm requesting an ambulance?

"Hi, I'm mB and I'm calling from the my municiapility ski patrol/bike patrol/Red Cross. I have a swedish woman here; Angelica Jonsson. Her date of birth is 1.7.77. High speed collision with a tree in the slopes, and we suspect that she has a strong concussion aswell as a possible femoral fracture. We have applied a hare splints, a vacuum spliunt, neck stabilizer and we're administering oxygen. She has been unconscious for about a minute, but she is awake now and has been for 5 minutes. Drowzy and a bit naueseus, but nothing extreme. I'd like the ambulance on a code 1 (blue lights, siren if needed) to this adress/this location code"

And then the fucking questions start.
>Is there a doctor or a nurse there who can verify or give additional info?
Woman, there are five guys here with more than 100 collective years of working with first aid and rescue
>Can I speak to the patient to have her verify her details?
She is currently being given oxygen, doesn't know where she is or even her last name. No
>Do you think you could meet the ambulance at *location*?
Thats on the other side of the mountain, and we'll have to cross 20 slopes, steep hills, and masses of tourists all coming down at insane speeds. No

This one was an older man, also with a presumed femoral fracture
>Is there a possibility that you can pick up one of the ambulance workers in about 10 minutes and transport them to the patient so that we can make sure that the transport is safe?
He wanted us to wait, in the slopes, with the patient and have somebody get the ambulance worker and drive him/her to us. He wanted us to wait in -25c and strong wind with a patient that had potential internal bleeding from their femoral artery, which would add atleast 30 more minutes until we could get him into an ambulance and on his way... I ended up calling the ambulance directly and asking them to come

I give my personal number to my fire buddies around here cause shit like this is too fucking common.

On a side not any of you watched that documentary on the Isle of man racing paramedics? Shit was awesome and the guy presenting it was a riot.
>>
>>17281305
Funny enough I watched that the other day. Was really interesting as someone who doesn't know shit about Paramedics or EMT. Shame about the guy dying though.
>>
>>17281305
But why is it common?
>>
>>17282831
I'm honestly not sure. The mental gymnastics that goes on in a dispatchers head is something I'll never understand. Maybe they think they're being helpful. But the biggest help we can be is treating the patient with diesel. Get em in the ambulance and to the hospital as soon as possible.

>urgent care
urgent cares are only there when you can't see you're PCP they're not equiped to deal with emergencies EMS is called for. And when EMS is dispatched depending on the call they have to transport to a certain hospital that is best equiped to the situation i.e. level 1 trauma center

Not really, no

I'm no first responder, I just work with the local ski patrol, and volunteer with the Norwegian Red Cross Search and Rescue Corps. In general; field workers tend to be a lot more professional than someone sitting at a des, answering phones and filling forms
