Has it ever been elaborated what is "up" with Takumi? It's not like the Japanese are exactly known for having couth, but the way he behaves is a bit... odd. It'd make more sense if he was an idiot savant (since he really has little knowledge on cars themselves, but seemingly understands physics quite well), possibly autistic since he only ever displays two emotions; his normal dazed expression and his angered expression. He also doesn't seem to understand some of the implications of the races.

What makes Initial D so special is how grounded it is (well, SOMEWHAT), and how it's relatable in terms of characters and subject matter. Even if Eurobeat was popular because of this anime, it was still technically "real music" and wasn't actually made for it, but they also worked so well in so many scenes. Not many other animes are like that, it was truly a work of art.

Shuichi Shigeno's writing is the embodiment of wasted potential. He can create a great setting, build interesting characters, and then go fucking nowhere with them.

They should just make Iketani the main character, have Takumi train him enough to beat the old characters Takumi already beat like Nakazato and eventually race those cunts in the finale to assert his dominance and lose his virginity.

I was really hoping that Iketani or Itsuki would develop some level of skill by the end of the series. I'm also pretty disappointed that Takumi never raced his dad because it seemed like there was a lot of build up for that.

That's what 4th Stage felt like it was building up to, but it just never came. It's even more disappointing when you realize that each Stage concludes with Takumi overcoming a hurdle by beating a foe. Final Stage at least retained that in some form by having Takumi race someone who was more or less a younger version of himself.

Are you getting a Corolla or a true bonafide AE86? The AE86 starts at 128hp, and Takumi's was about 150hp. The American Corolla was detuned to 112hp, with the same engine. You shouldn't have to modify the engine, just tune it.

If you watched the whole series you ended up seeing all the different characters that would come and how much time they'd spend following them and "their story" MUCH MUCH more than in Inisharu Deru

The characters in Wangan were MUCH more relatable and "human" With lives and ambitions and dreams and hopes and talents and weaknesses

And they took time to help you get invested with each new character and got to see things from "their" perspective instead of watching most of initial-D through the eyes of an autistic kid.

Between the different teams vying for supremacy in the various passes, the Speed Star's antics, and Tak trying to juggle all this along with a job, a girl and a prick dad, you get a decently good slice of life. It has a lot of appeal to non-car people because of this, and a lot of the side characters from the first two seasons were so memorable and fleshed out that a lot of people (myself included) think Shigeno could pull off an entire season of "Extra Stages" that have nothing to do with Tak or the Takahasis.

Conversely, Wangan Midinght puts people to sleep because it's completely pointless and rather boring

Half of Wangan's charas were just people filling voids in their lives with (pretty goddamn nice) cars, the pacing was whack some scenes even feel disjointed... I think they completely skip one if Akio's major crashes. Cardboard MC would make Dagumi look like a fucking loud comedian tarento or some shit.

The Devil Z and Porsh were pretty sexy beasts, though. Dat catchy OP too.

But overall initial D is the better show. The potato CGI even grew into me.

Akio actually had a personality and had knowledge and an ACTUAL passion for cars and racing and tuning, so much so that he wanted to drop out senior yr just so he could persue that passion, dagumi for a good portion of the series didn't have any passion for anything or anyone and was legitimately autistic or at least had aspergers or some mental problem..

Not only that, but Akio crashes and loses races all the time so when you watch a race you don't really know who's gonna win, esp when it's other characters racing other characters that aren't akio, but in initial-D you know that dagumi is gonna win and starts to turn into dbz where there's no real sense of "whats gonna happen"

and everyone has their own reasons for racing the Wangan every midnight, some for the excitement, some to practice their driving skills, others to be the fastest or best, and others just to push their car to the limit, and others as an escape from their boring or mundane lives, and others just like to tune and work on their car or others

The raw level of obsession that Akio had is the main reason I prefer Wangan Midnight.

I also had a Hard-on for S30's and Aircooled porches so it attracted me on that and made me love it even more.

I like both though but I kind of prefer Wangan. Maybe it's because I honestly saw it before intial d.
