The heat gun probably loosens the glue and makes it more pliable. hair dryer would probably wrk

The disc will also take the glue off, easily. Just don`t keep it one place too long, or you might burn through the paint.

The places where the vinyl was will still be noticeable vs the spots where it was bare paint.
