Classic car culture in Japan is fucking abysmal. All of the vehicles there are worth double what they are in the US and parts import and shipping fees would make it even more disgusting. Not to mention the lack of parking, environment regulations and a complete lack of homes with garage space. It's basically just for wealthy Japanese people whereas in the US, any average joe can find and build a classic car.

Then they have to be inspected every 2 years, after 10 years its yearly.
$2,000 just for inspection.
Engines over 60,000 miles need to be re certified for emissions.
ANY leak is a fail.

A classic car is either a trailer queen, or rebuilt multiple times while you own it.
I worked for a company that restored 65-73 mustangs for export to Japan.

Normal smog inspection in the U.S. is like $29.99- some states are yearly smog and safety inspection dumbshit.
That's a big leap to Japan's $2,000.
That's $2,000 just to look at it. Doesmt matter if its only been riven 100 miles since last inspecrion. Any and every flaw has to be repaired or the vehicle is banned from the road.

alright i've read up on the shaken and it's basically the exact same tests we have to do in europe.

the car goes on a rolling dyno to test brakes, vibrating plates for shocks, machine to test headlight power and aim... the guy tests that everything works and nothing's fucky (seatbelts, doors...), sensor in the exhaust for smog... then it goes up on ramps and the guy checks the underside for rust, leaks, brake or tire damage... and fucks with the drivetrain and axles with a crowbar to see if there's play in bushings and stuff

but here in europe all this costs 50 to 60 euros. that's even including the 2d test if you fail and have to come back.

actually they do now. it's not like before.

some reasons i've seen cars fail:

-sticker on the windshield that isn't proof of insurance. doesn't matter if it's small and out of the field of view od the driver, it's a fail.

- discolored front blinker lens. blinker was working fine, the lens just was discolored because of the sun and lost its orange color.

-rear door not opening from the outside handle

- tire size not on the factory approved list. even though the tires were brand new and a perfectly good size for the car (no stretched sidewall or poking out of the fender)

- parking brake not braking hard enough

etc... it's becoming harder and harder nowadays to get my cars through inspection. + the guys i used to pay to get my shitpiles through either got caught or don't want to do it anymore because of the risk of getting caught... so i'm stuck doing 5 inspections and as many brake bleeds because of a minor rear brake imbalance on a 35 year old car
