I want to get a bimmer as my first car, but I am a poorfag since I'm a uni student who also owns a bike

what should I get? should I even get one? I am not sure about the costs.
I am not a badge whore, I would be happy with a civic for example, but try getting a cheap eg5 in Germany or any other nipponese car that is somewhat fun
it seems like used bimmers are the cheapest enthusiast cars available in Germoney, or am I wrong? is maintenance really that expensive or is it just muricans sperging?
I don't need a car for practicality, I just want to drive for fun as long as I am young, so it is either a fun car or no car at all
>>
>>17177635
is the bodykit stock (m sport)?
>>
>>17179299
It's mostly just muricans being stupid as fuck, thinking a 750 is the same thing as an ancient 300d Benz and that it will run forever with zero maintenance because GERMAN ENGINEERING IT'S SUPPOSED TO LAST.
E36's with the M50 are reliable, easy to work on and cheap to maintain. Aside for the cooling, they're sturdy engines and go half a million kilometres easily with just basic maintenance.

that's what I thought, I can't imagine that maintenance is more expensive than on a jap shitbox since we have so many parts available in Germoney and Honda parts for example need to be imported etc.

can you recommend me a model? I was looking at the e36 325, I would prefer an e46 for safety, but they are probably more expensive

E36 and E46 are somewhat similar, the E46 being more luxurious because it's never, but the E36 technically being more reliable because it's simpler and has less features. E36's are also lighter if I remember right.
One feature I did not like in the E36 was the frameless windows.

Get an e36 325 from before 1992, if you can.
They have the sought after non-vanos engine.

I'm not saying vanos will fuck you up, but it's 1 less potential problem, plus some internal components are sturdier, as is the block itself.

We did a lot of drifting with my old shitbox 5 speed manual E34 525 with the M50, thing had 700k km on the clock and ripped hektik skidz on asphalt like no ones business.
For a 700 buck car, that thing was a god damn bargain. Wouldn't be surprised if it would've made to one million without a hitch.
Automatics were our thing though because you can hold hands while cruising.

If you're gonna end up with an obd1 bimmer you're gonna want one link that will make your life a whole lot easier.

>>
>>17180972
I've had it happen once too on the aforementioned E34 525, we hit a snow bank head on at quite the speed and the airbags failed to inflate, airbag light just went off.
Removed the module and applied some power from a spare car battery, expecting an explosion and nothing happened.
Luckily there was no damage to the car and no one got hurt, just a good jolt.

Hey guys, /nocar/ here looking to become /hascar/ in the late summer or autumn after saving my pennies through the summer.
BMW's have really caught my eye because they seem to be the only affordable RWD manuals in my area (NA miatas are all around 8-12k here).

Is there a "better" E36 for a first BMW? Im planning to learn how to work on things myself to try and keep maintenance costs down

>>17182383
I say get a compact.

Basically a cheap, uglier E30 with more aftermarket.

Has the advantages of an e36 with a bigger engine bay (so your eventual swap to an m50/2 is super easy and is also plug and play), bolt on coilovers instead of weld on and you can swap anything from e36 into it.
But also has the advantages of the e30 with livelier handling, no rear subframe issues and its light as fuck

otherwise get a 328 or 325. 323's are okay but need alot of work to uncork the engine compared to the other 2. The m42/m44 powered cars are okay but the 6's are more reliable and make more power

I'm looking at buying at a manual 2001 325i e46. It's got 187,00 kms and seems to be in pretty good shape. I'm going to go look at it tomorrow and the asking price is 4500 CAD. I'm in school and don't have the most money but i've been driving a shitty van for years and i'm tired of it. I see the sticky says 100,000 - 150,000 Kms is preferred but I'd think 187,000 isn't too far off.

My worries would be that it's a 15 year old car with the KMs going up and i don't have more than $2000 to sink into this over the next year. Any thoughts on it are appreciated.

Isn't that an E92 though? No matter, they're quite fine. Own a E91 320d touring myself as a "work" car for longer trips, it's quite fine and I doubt the petrol engine is any less reliable than the terrible mess that is the 2 litre diesel 4 pot in these things.

No it isn't. Use your head. There's far less demand for them.

It's a much heavier, larger car with a smaller aftermarket and no dedicated racing series. E30s aren't getting expensive because they look cool, they're getting expensive because they are very desirable for every use from track car to stock daily driver and have an ENORMOUS rate of attrition due to stancefaggots, drift kiddies and track use. E24s don't really make a good track car because they're kind of heavy, have a bendy chassis and don't handle all that well stock. They don't appeal to people who want a light car that handles well, they don't appeal to people who want to do a street/track build, they don't appeal to drift kiddies. They appeal to stancefags because they look cool but I think they're too unusual, stancefags prefer to ruin cars that have meme status because it helps them fit in and get likes.

>>
>>17196772

The E34 was far more of a luxury car than other BMWs, which made it drive worse but they make a nice cheap runaround.
>>
>>17196776
And an E28 was an even better cheap runaround. And a much more entertaining drive in the process.
>>

The E34 is cheaper and more comfortable.

Definitely wouldn't say more comfortable. It's bigger, and that's it. Cheaper? Nah. Equivalent M30/Getrags the E28s still a better buy, just.

I had the privilege of DDing an E34 535i for a couple years, and while it was alright, the only real thing going for it was the sum of its parts. The body is currently on its way to be turned nto star-pickets and rio bar, while the B35/G260-6 is getting ready to make its way home in my 528i Motorsport.

Only if you're talking about M30. I'd have an M30 over an M50 or M60 any day. M50s are overrated and M60s are just an objectively inferior substitute for an aluminum LS.
>>
>>17196700
People looking to chop up/modify cars are a tiny group overall, just overrepresented on enthusiast forums for obvious reasons. In total 2.4 million E30s were made and 86k E24s (which were made for a longer period of time). For just US E30s sold 40-60k per year, while only 30k E24s total were sold in the US, barely over 2k average a year. I don't think they are drastically underpriced, but selling for less than a clapped E30 is ridiculous, at some point people will realize there aren't that many left that haven't been scrapped or ran into the ground.
>>

>In total 2.4 million E30s were made
And they were run into the ground and scrapped/crashed by normies for 15 years before enthusiasts realized they're good.
>>

It's a small 15 unit building, the lot is actually full.
>>
>>17196948

The real reason that E24s haven't really caught on is that around the world a good 80% of them are automatics, manual models command such a premium that most people look at them and say to themselves 'that much for an E24?'

I'm not that passionate about Alfa Romeo but this is ridiculous, it's like professional journalists don't want people to know how good these cars are...at least when it comes to performance.

German cars are status symbols. fashion items for rich people. If you want a drivers' car you buy Italian.
Also it's no secret that in Europe FIAT and Alfa score higher in reliability than German cars.

are there any bodykits for the e36 that look like the m-sport kit or similar? I don't mean cheap ebay replicas
or is there a better way to make a non-m-sport e36 look less like a dad car?

I am bored and out of money. Should I attack some back roads in my shitbox 530 or sit at home and try to play video games?
The 530 has half a tank gas left and the sensible thing to do would be to save the gas just in case, but I don't really need a car for next week and my pay comes in next Thursday, so I could refuel it then.
>>
>>17201075
At least put an aluminum block V8 like an LS in it you complete faggot
>>
>>17201849
Or just leave the 4 litre or 4.4 litre in. I doubt an LS would be that much better in a E38. Sure they might have more horsepower in the end, but I seriously doubt they are anywhere near as smooth as the M60 and M62 are.
>>
>>17201883
>but I seriously doubt they are anywhere near as smooth as the M60 and M62 are.
Well you've just revealed that you've never driven anything powered by an LS engine. Protip; crossplane V8s are all about as smooth as each other as long as you aren't talking stuff with big rumbling camshaft profiles.
>>
>>17201883
Nigger most of the appeal of muh big vee ate is how smooth and torquey they are
>>
>>17201892
I've had only one V8 car before my 530 E34, that was an old Pontiac Firebird with some sort of a 5 litre V8 that pushed out a mind blowing 150hp, thing sounded like a truck and was as smooth as an old tractor. Haven't touched American V8's after that one.
>>
>>17201899
>my clapped out piece of shit was bad so that means something 30 years newer and not maintained by a retarded ape must be bad too
off yourself
>>
>>17201919
My 530 is a clapped out piece of shit, the Firebird while old was in quite good shape. Had some paint issues but mechanically that thing was somewhat sound. Had a lot of issues though, both head gaskets went at the same time, then the engine overheated and the heads warped.
>>
>>17201923
>mechanically that thing was somewhat sound. Had a lot of issues though, both head gaskets went at the same time, then the engine overheated and the heads warped.
you can't even keep your story straight
>>
>>17201928
Thus the "somewhat sound". Most of the issues were due to old age probably, radiator for example cracked which caused it to lose coolant pressure and the engine overheated.
>>
>>17201939
Teetering on the edge of catastrophic failure isn't somewhat sound.
>>
>>17201953
I've had a lot worse to be honest, my 750 for example did the same shit to me, despite having only 119k km on the clock.
That shit happens, especially with older cars.

Been driving great except for once not selecting gears. Is that a linkage problem? It's working great now. Also, earlier today, I went to start it and it just turned over for a few seconds. Waited and then it started up immediately like usual. Is it something from this list? samarins

Also, what sort of preventative maintenance should I look out for?
