I'm planning to get my gearbox overhauled soon and while i'm at it i plan on throwing an LSD in there. so there are helical and clutch operated LSDs. besides price whats the difference between them?
Visit a forum applicable to your vehicle first, there will be serious owners and weekenders such as yourself.
There will most likely be cheaper options, but most OS giken kits claim lifetime warranties and are pretty much the only industry standard around. Buy right, buy once, but don't waste your money.
If you're not tracking it, go helical. If you are, you wouldn't be asking. Clutch packs wear out (OS claims they never will, many people back this up), but helical offers far better streetability and is far more progressive.

Clutches wear out.

a clutch type os giken LSD for my car is 1500+AUD. compared to just a mfactory helical being 900. thats a huge price difference. how much worse is a helical compared to a clutch based lsd on track?

Helical will act as an open diff as soon as one tyre is in the air. Clutch type will be better for track, not by a big enough margin to justify the extra costs of maintenance for a car that's mostly driven on the street though.

Apologies, they're practically a ghost in my country - cost a fuckload to import.

Mate got a TruTrack put into his Caprice. Just had fluid flushed after the break in period. It goes like a champ and make a huge difference in concerning grip.
