Not bad at all. I daily a Ford Transit 250 right now which is only slightly bigger than a Connect. I would recommend getting the Transit if you can. Higher seating position, more cargo space, and you already have the rails and brackets in place to add seats if you want to down the road. Fuel economy will be worse (14/18) but you can get either the 3.7L V6 which is pretty good or you can go with the EcoBoost in which case you're putting 320 hp/400 torque to the wheels on a plumbers van which is p. cool.

go for it. It's basically a Ford Focus van with a worse rear suspension than a normal Focus. Normal Focus gets an IRS, but to keep a plat load floor, the Transit Connect uses a semi-independent torsion beam axle with leafsprings for load capacity.
Should you eventually want to lower it, you can. Focus springs/struts work on the front, but the rear requires welding to move the springs from above the axle to below it.

the problem is that i would use this for city driving. so a shorter wheelbase/smaller size as well fuel economy are pretty important. originally, i wanted to get a small truck with an access cab but it looks like no one really makes small trucks but nissan and the frontier doesn't seem to be considered that good of a truck. also, even the long wheelbase connect is shorter than the frontier, although i would get the short wheelbase one.

i'm just trying to find a new commuter car that doesn't completely sacrifice cargo space while still maintaining decent fuel economy. everything is either tiny, or too expensive for a commuter car. the connect it seems i can get new for ~20k.

The Transit and Transit Connect are unrelated and share nothing but a name. The Transit Connect is FWD and based on the Focus, while the Transit is its own thing.

If in the US, the 2010-2012 Transit Connect came only with the Ford Focus 2.0L, and should get high 20's gas mileage wise. Newer ones should fare somewhat better or around the same.
