Best way to learn stick shift if you don't have a stick car or know someone that does?

I figure i can pick it up in basically a day, so was thinking either rentals or maybe zipcar would be a good option[?]
>>
Buy one and drive it daily
>>
honestly just go to a dealership and test drive a used manual car.

just scoot it around in their parking lot then when you destroy the clutch just say 'i'm not interested'
>>
>>17051530
Get a Logitech G27 and Assetto Corsa. The accurate clutch and throttle motion will train you without even having to hit the road.
>>
>>17051550

Do this.
Literally how I learned.
>>
Ride a bike with gears, it's a manual transmission. If you can make your shifts real smooth up and down with no jerks and constant power, you can drive a manual
>>
>>17051576
>>17051550
yeah but i'd feel like a dick

can't i just rent a car for one day to learn

i dont want to sign up and dox myself to zipcar to just find out "NO MANUALS IN YOUR TOWN GO FUCK YOURSELF XD"
>>
ok double nigger i can't find a stick shift car to rent anywhere.

guess i'm gonna go the test drive route.
>>
>>17051597
>yeah but i'd feel like a dick

Best part of it.
>>
>>17051597
>would rather pay to rent a car then just 20 mins of a quick test drive for free

believe me they don't care
>>
>>17051597
>yeah but i'd feel like a dick

just tell them you dont know how to drive stick in advance, like call ahead and ask if you can test drive <whatever car it is you want to> but you cant drive stick, you'll get someone to teach you

if you can do it between lunch and 5 on a weekday you'll be saving them from boredom anyway
>>
>>17051643
sounds good

>>17051672
ok cool thanks, i dont want to burdeon anyone but yeah they seemed pretty bored at some times. so lunch-5pm is the time to strike, even on a friday
>>
>>17051550
is the risk of damaging the clutch that high
>>
>>17051530

What's the point? You might as well take up blacksmithing while you're at it. Manual cars will likely be non-existent within the next 5-10 years. If you don't own a manual car now it's kinda pointless to learn now.
>>
>>17052349
They will never stop making the vehicle i'm interested in with stick

shit, fucking automatic transmission costs like 1500$ more! the 6 speed is the standard.
>>
God you fucking faggots are whiney and annoying.

Just go buy a 5 speed or 6 speed shitbox. You're not getting goddamn married and having kids, it's just a freaking car. You can offload the car or dump it when you're ready to move on to the next.

Buy it, drive it, git gud, sell it/wreck it/trash it, buy another one that's better. What, you think everyone in your little shitsville town is going to laugh at you for life because you stalled your car a few times? NO ONE FUCKING CARES. Don't spend a bajillion years agonizing over it, don't spend a bajillion dollars getting lessons.

Buy. A. Stickshift. Learn.
>>
>>17052349
>you have to continuously buy a new vehicle
This throw away logic must be a staple of the automatic transmission "enthusiast"
>>
The novelty wears off real fast
>>
>>17052305
Not really, you need to fuck up a lot, over and over and over to damage the clutch

the clutch is designed to normally last as long as the life time of the car
>>
>>17052455

It's 2017 get with the times Grandpa. Would you keep a cell phone for 10 years? Why would you keep a car for 10 years?

it takes a lot of effort and work to buy and sell a car just to learn when i can just get the basics down quickly
>>
yes i already went down the "get a shitbox xd" route but all the dealers don't have anything cheap and i dont want to bother with craigslist bullshit especially as i dont currently have wheels
>>

>drive it's tits off

>>
>>17052546
>buying a shitbox from a dealer
>scared of manual
>scared of craigslist
you're fucking hopeless dude.

stop being a pussy your entire life.
save some money, call friends or family for a ride, look at some cars.
buy a shitbox civic or something and learn to drive it.
it's not hard.
>>
>>17051597
>i'd feel like a dick
you gonna be an alpha? or you gonna be a beta?

you can't float around between both. you either get stepped on your entire life, or you put your fucking foot down and fuck over everybody but numero uno.

go get yours, anon...
>>
>>17052555
>Buy $500 manual car
>Scrap for $200
>Profit?

You stupid fuck, that is the opposite of a profit, its a $300 loss to learn how to drive a manual when you could just get a $50 rental for a day.
>>
>>17052580
>>17052567
lmao you guys put a lot of energy into vehicles and seemingly base your self-esteem off them

it's just not worth my fucking time to deal with retard asshole dipshits (and likely niggers) on craigslist because my time is more valuable then that

i'm not fucking scared of stick i'm just pissed off as hell it's so difficult to get a fucking stick shift car for a day to mess around with it, but the test drive option is the way to go now that i got /o/'s input
>>
>>17052588
this too, it's gonna cost money and time, fucking stupid.

although rentals dont seem to have it, i'll just do a test drive and then just buy the car i'm interested in and refine it there
>>
>>17052588

Thrashing the fuck out of a car is worth the $300, even better if it's split between friends. But you should just spend it on video games and mountain dew instead faggot. Good luck finding a manual rental car.

I find it interesting how there is nothing that rivals "the stick'" argument in the sheer amount of polarized autism filled reactions it illicits.

The only comparison I can think of is IR porn on /hc/ or /gif/ and the threads with 500 replys and only 100 images because it is all incomprehensible run on sentences rambling about their degenerate fetsh irl

>pic related 100%
>that being said I have driven both and now my autism demands I have a manual transmission in every vehicle I operate
>>
>>17051530
Best way to learn stick: commute to work but don't drive on the highway because that's too easy. Don't shy away from hills. You need to be able to get comfortable starting from a hill.
>>
>>17051563
>Assetto Corsa
>slowly and carefully releasing clutch
>car stalls
>redline for a minute on half-clutch
>clutch don't burn

if anything simulates clutch anywhere near okay, it's LFS
>>
>>17052639
and then mastering sex in one day.
>>
>>17052596
Your time is valuable, yet you ride the bus.
Nice try autismo.

Stop being a scared little fag and pick up the phone and buy a car.

my car got totaled (some idiot plowed into it while it was parked) and i left town for 2 weeks shortly after

i'm going back soon and yeah, i dont have time to fuck around on craigslist

literally buy yourself a driving lesson dawg

>>>In my shithole every car below 5k $ is manual, and everybody can drive it
>>
>>17051530
This is how I learned. About 10 years ago I was on a lot looking for a car. Knew absolutely zero about cars that that time and was shopping based on looks. Liked the poor man's 3 series thing that the jetta had going on and the dealer had a 03 1.8t bone stock with extremely low mileage that was a grandma trade in. The only issue with it was that it was a manual. I explained to the sales guy that I couldn't drive manual and heat it have to keep looking. He looked me in the eye and said dude I'm not even going to lie, we've just gotten that through our inspection and it's been on the lot one day and is probably the best deal out here so if you're willing, I'll teach you to drive it. He took his lunch break and drove me to the mall up the street and in 30 minutes I was driving it like a champ. Bought it and drove it from Brunswick to Waycross without a single stall out or issue. Been driving manual ever since.
>>
Question since this is a manual thread.

Do you guys keep the car in neutral till the light turns green or the car in front of you moves off or do you get the clutch to right before or at the bight point and just hold it there till the light turns?
>>
>>17055858

I am in neutral usually until the opposing light goes yellow them i go into gear and wait the couple seconds/begin to creep up. This is because i live in Canada and all the people are so use to driving automagics that if you don't get off the second the light goes green you get a nice honk or people ride your ass by two inches if you don't go quick enough from 1st to 2nd.
>>
Zipcar doesn't even have manual cars in the U.S.
>>
>>17055858
If I'm the first in line at the light I'll keep it in first ready to go. Other than that I'll keep it out of gear till the opposite light turns yellow.
>>
>>17055858
keep it in neutral. better for the clutch
>>
Do they not have driver training in America? Just get one lesson.
>>
>>17056077
We do but PRNDLS are so common you're not required to learn how to drive a standard.
>>
For a 90 degree turn you're slowing down to take, are you guys fully off the clutch before taking the turn ?
Having difficulty keeping the shift smooth from 4th to 2nd and being in gear before turning the wheel.

>1. start car with clutch and brake pressed in all the way
>2. let off brake
>3. give vehicle gas to about the 1500 RPM if level, go to about 2000 RPM if on a hill
>4. let off clutch slowly, if you jerk, you did it too fast
>5. immediately brake to a hard stop and let off the clutch completely
>>
>>17056373
fuck i forgot something

>6. to shift up, let off gas completely
>7. to shift down, shift to next gear then give engine gas to +1000 RPM from where you were when you began shifting

disregard all faggots telling you youre riding the clutch, smack tailgaters with your ass at a stop, and dont float gears
>>
>>17056373

>1.5-2k RPM to take off

What? You should be giving it just enough gas to get going without lugging the engine or any vibration to get going. Then once you are completely off the clutch give it gas. 1.5k-2k rpm is way too high imo. You should not just be revving to 2k and dropping the clutch to get going. Maybe i am reading this wrong but that is what it sounds like.
>>
>>17052499
There are a lot of cars that are worth keeping for a long time if you like them and can maintain them well.

>>17056552
a toenail on my gas pedal shoots the RPM up to 1500, your car is weak in the britches

wait wait wait.
your moving forward by letting off the clutch slowly? thats what youre doing? ah thanks, ok, i got it now, ill do that forever from now on
>>
>>17056384
>>17056373
thanks this is super helpful, though #5 confuses me -- if the engine is in 1st you're not supposed to come to a hard stop, right? i thought you were supposed to be either clutched in or in neutral

for 6/7 - so basically shifting up the new target rpm is going to be lower than the current engine rpm, and shifting down the new target rpm is going to be higher than the current engine rpm, so as a rough estimate you use either no more gas or +1k rpm?

and the clutch basically takes up the difference between the actual specific rpm that it's supposed to be at, and what you happen to be at?

>>17052580

kek im a professionally trained blacksmith. I quit because there was so much work it destroyed my hands.
>>
>>17056937
its different in some vehicles, my car (toyota MR-S) is pretty organized in terms of where to rev match. in my car, if youre at 3k RPM in 3rd gear, shifting to 4th would put you at 2k RPM, and shifting down to 2nd would put you at 4k RPM. youll get a feel of it in your vehicle

#5 is a prank. youll stall if you do #5. on that note, in racing, 1st is not for 1st place. thats a lie
>>
>>17058666
just bought mrs too. first manual car in 6 years. I find double clutching provides the smoothest downshifts even if youre not 100% accurate.
