friend got me this , and amp. Audio jocks, do i really NEED a fuse and NEED a hi-low converter? How would i connect it to the wire that hooks up to the speaker in the back of the car?

Not an audiofagit but I know sum electrics.
>need a fuse
No. What for?
>need hi-low converter
If you're adding an amp, yeah. You wanna get those low voltage signals so your amp can boost them to the required levels of your new sub. Sending high voltage signals to an amp is a bad idea.

Take out stereo and add in the converter then attach RCA cables to it so you can connect your amp later. Put back your stereo and connect it to amp via RCA and then your speaker cables to the amp.
If it's just the sub and sub amp then you can splice into existing wires and not worry about rewiring the existing speakers to your amp.

Something like that, I'm sure the interwebs can do better than me in step by steps.

>do i really NEED a fuse
The fuse should be located as close to the power source tap as possible. It's there to protect the long power line from shorting out to something. There's still fucktons of people who install their own speaker box and put the power line fuse right at the amp due to convenience of installation.

if you don't have the fuse you have fires instead

>NEED a hi-low converter?
only if your amp does not have one built in
at some point why not just use sp dif
>>
Op ignore those faggots they're both wrong

First of all, yes you need a fuse
>>17051674
Is right it should be within 12 inches of the battery.

Second, you probably do not need a hi Lo converter. That is mainly for if you tap into your speaker wires. If you use rca cables into the back of your head unit you won't need a hi Lo converter.
>>
>>17051674
>shorting out to something
What is the power going to short to? If there's a short it means that the amp (in this case) will not receive any power so a fuse will do fuck all.
>>
>>17051355
You absolutely need to fuse the power wire of the amp that will be driving it, no more than 18 inches from the battery, this prevents fires.

Hi-low converter? Do you mean a line-out converter to tap into the rear speakers? If you're not directly feeding the amp a subwoofer signal then yes.
>>
OP here

>>17053685
Yes tapping into trunk speaker wires, all i'm having trouble doing is finding a power source to the AMP
>>
>>17053587
i think its to protect the battery, not the amp
>>
yes you need a fuse, if you dont use a fuse eventually you will melt the rubber plastic jacket off your speaker wires and it will either catch the carpet on fire or electrocute you, killing you instantly
t. electronics specialist/electro-mechanical specialist
>>
>>17054030
you'll need to install a wire connected directly to your battery
>>
>>17054652
But the battery is designed to discharge large currents, it won't be affected in the least.
>>17054667
>if you don't use a fuse eventually you will melt the rubber plastic
This doesn't make sense unless you literally connect your power line straight to ground. The purpose of a fuse is not to somehow make thermal improvements to wires.
>>
>>17056451
I guess we don't need fuses at all then huh?
Just wire everything directly and get rid of your fusebox, so when something goes wrong, You can be sure it catches on fire.
