Let me tell you something about my E46 experience.
It was in the shop, LITERALLY, once a month.
The maintenance schedule alone is expensive. I bought my 330xi E46 with 70k on it for 10k back in 2008.
I spend another 5k in regular maintenance and OEM repairs just to keep it running over the course of a year. Gave up, garage parked it for a few months, fixed it up again, and sold it to a friend for 1k.
He got it and it complete shit on him too.
Don't buy high mileage german. Ever.

It was 7 years old when I bought it.
The only mod I ever did was tint the windows.
Labor isn't very expensive because people have to be able to compete,
but OEM parts are expensive. Some HAVE to come from Germany and some are just expensive because of the car they're going in.

I'm only familiar with the M54, the E90 uses the N52 engine.
I couldn't tell you about those prices but I'd imagine they'd be more expensive since they're using more technologically advanced parts.

Lexus prices here aren't too bad. They're higher than high mileage German, but they're also multiple times better.
My sister's late 90's Lexus lasted to over 300k miles.
