Purposefully drifting at retarded angles to block to road is a good way to get yourself set up to get spun. If you're gud you should be able to drift while maintaining speed, your line, and without deviating too far from your "lane". while rwd cars had to little grip to get to those speeds for that corner.

It's obviously a balance otherwise rally cars wouldn't use off-road tires and prefer awd. Grip is the technically correct answer because it's also better in all other ways- braking and acceleration.

Practically, the answer to grip or drift is whichever allows you to leave a corner the fastest. Drifting makes sense if the push of the drive wheels into the corner allows you to go through a corner faster than if you only used the lateral traction of the tires.
