Yes it is, especially in stop and go rush hour (read: every hour) California traffic. But the longer you lane split, the greater the chances that you're increasing the difference in speed between your bike and the cars around you. If you mostly move with the flow of traffic, it's safer, but when you pass cars to get ahead, there's a huge risk of someone being impatient and suddenly merging. Heavier traffic also means that there are more objects for your eyes to track, so not only will you have a harder time predicting which vehicles might merge randomly, but a randomly merging vehicle will have a much harder time seeing you. If the speed limit is 65mph and you're traveling at that speed but every other car is going 35 and trying to find a way to get ahead, you're asking to die. It's not fair, but it's reality.

It's like walking through a bad neighborhood. Is it legal? Absolutely. Is it your right? Yes. Should there be anything preventing you from doing it? No. Is it your fault if something bad happens? Nope. Was something bad preventable? Yep. It sucks, but complaining about other drivers isn't going to change how traffic works. You lane split, you take the risk of dying.
