The new Tesla will have no gauges for the driver. Opinions /o/?
>>
It will be interesting to see the end result of this vehicular appliance direction in automotive engineering.
>>
That steering wheel design is so fucking ugly.

Everything about the interior is ugly. Slapping a gigantic screen on the dash and literally nothing else is disgusting.

It's funny because it's a cost cutting measure in what's supposed to be the coolest new electric car so of course the cucks will defend it as innovation and the way of the future.

Tesla is just like Apple was a couple years ago. The Apple hivemind has died off a bit with Jobs tho but it looks like Elon is gonna pick up where he left off.

lel Elon is a sperg as usual.

He wonders why people get mad when they buy an $100K car and it has a $25K interior. Motor/tech aside people have base expectations.

I know the model 3 is far less but the interior is still cheap and fucking stupidly designed with the "STICK A TABLET" there mentality. It's far worse than anything Audi or mercedes has done just because of size and the lack of a traditional cluster.

The only way I'd buy a Tesla would be if Uwe Gemballa was still alive and I could get one modded by him. That guy knew how to use screens in a smart way and would also surely add his own gauges and refurnish the whole thing. The screen behind the wheel gets its video feed from the cameras mounted in place of the mirrors for better aerodynamics.

>Uwe Gemballa
On February 17, 2010, it was reported that Uwe Gemballa had gone missing in Johannesburg, South Africa while on a business trip. In October 2010, Uwe Gemballa was found shot dead in South Africa.[13] It is suspected that his murder was a result of a money laundering operation which turned against him.[14] On October 29, 2010 Thabiso Mpshe, 28, from Pretoria, pleaded guilty to charges related to his involvement in the murder of Uwe Gemballa in Johannesburg. Under the terms of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. [15] In 2015, three additional men, Thabo Mogapi, Kagiso Ledwaba and Garlond Holworthy, were also convicted of charges relating to the kidnap and murder of Gemballa. Their sentencing hearing is expected to begin on 30 November 2015.

I agree that this is stupid, and I personally think it is more difficult to look slightly to my right than directly in front of me for ANY guage information (Hate that fucking cooper set up), but I kind of understand why they are doing it this way. Saves weight, less to program, less electrical use, etc.

I would argue that an inovative schmuck company such as Tesla should have put a monitor on the steering wheel that rotates to remain up right with the turning and the center console would be completely void of anything except storage space. Then, they could sell an upgrade accessory that allows the co-pilot to plug in a Tesla approved monitor directly in front of them that can stow safely and cleanly away into one of the storage bins, in the event you have people like me and my girlfriend who likes to do all the radio, stalactite, air controls, etc and I focus on shifting, corner speeds, and apex's.

>I fucking hate the future of cars
All the data that the company wants gets sent back to the database. That's the other problem about all these modern internet type cars. Even if they don't give you internet wifi (some do such as onstar), the cars themselves use cellular to send the data to a database.

The usa House of Representatives just voted to repeal a major key internet privacy law. So companies have a lot more access to data that was formerly protected. Now the ISP can collect and sell your internet browsing history. It doesn't matter if you use https because the address in the header of internet data packets still needs to be correct and visible for the routers.

It won't be long before your car tells your insurance company when and where you were speeding, doing excessive G-force hooning, or driving on unsafe roads. That data will probably be in the next privacy law reversal.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/03/28/the-house-just-voted-to-wipe-out-the-fccs-landmark-internet-privacy-protections/?tid=pm_business_pop

Since the Senate is in favor of removing various restrictions, it looks likely there will be a comprehensive bill developed for the privacy law change.

Hopefully you would be looking at the road. So glancing at your gauges would be a look down.

Glances down and side to side are very quick. Diagonal glances take twice as long for a given distance. Since the gauge is diagonally down from straight ahead the distance is greater than straight down. A gauge check will take at least twice as long.. maybe even three times. Enough time for something to happen, like a child running out in front of.

bullshit, studies have shown most Americans don't want anything to do with autonomous cars and all these high profile crashes will only reinforce that lack of interest.

You seriously believe that since most Americans aren't interested in autonomous vehicles now, that they won't ever become the standard?
In the early 1900s, most people had no interest in owning a horseless carriage. Expensive, noisy, smelly, etc. In time the technology matured, like self driving cars will, and riding in a horse-drawn buggy was obsolete.

Just at the beginning of the decade, autonomous cars were largely science fiction. Now they're practically around the corner. Nobody's going to force you to give up your self driven car for a long time, but you can't deny the benefits of autonomous vehicles.

It was probably the exact opposite. Looks like the kinda solution an engineer would come up with when you're halfway through design and need to approximate a functioning dashboard ASAP so you can work on something more important. Then you get cost-cutting and rushed schedules and your manager says "that tablet thingie works, yeah? We need this design out the door, just stick it on the dash and be done."

You're not gonna design the dashboard first. It's entirely likely that at some stage of designing/testing, you're gonna need to output the dash info onto a computer screen. And this sure as hell looks like that stopgap solution was incorporated into the final design.

And? That's like .005% of the population, and it also shows that you will probably still be allowed to drive your own car even when virtually no one else does.

>Any vehicle that will gladly kill me to save someone else i will never own.
That's not how autonomous cars work. They don't understand the concept of killing people, they're just programmed to survive and protect their occupants to the best of their ability.
Given the choice of hitting a ped or a bus, it will hit the ped since it's a smaller obstacle and likely to incur less damage. Doesn't really differentiate between a person, cactus, llama, or tall cardboard box.

>become a cuck and have to be treated like a baby and carted everywhere by a computer
Only cucks own a washing machine. Real men take their laundry out to the shore and beat it against rocks. Only cucks own a calculator, real men do 12 digit long division by hand. ITT: Stupendous amounts of asshurt

Sit and think about it for a few seconds, you idiots. How often do you need to scan your gauges - especially in an electric car? Other than speed - which if you have any experience at all with driving, you can practically feel or if you need visual aids, you just match the speed of the cars around you (called 'going with the flow of traffic') the only other thing you need to give a fuck about is the amount of charge you have left. Both of these bits of information are of the sort that don't need to be constantly monitored unless you have some problems because you're on the autism spectrum.

Lastly, you have your GPS map which if you want to be able to quickly scan it, needs to be big, so put it in the middle!
>>
>>16922004
You brain processes the position of needle quicker than doing the simple math to calculate your speed.

Its kind like how understanding something visually is easier than reading it.
>>

>>16925641
>you need to be a racer to feel speed

I scan my gauges a few times a day when I'm curious how much gas I have left. Other than that I match the flow of traffic, so no reason to check my speed.

I think the only time I bother to check the speedo is when I pass a cop.

Haven't had a speeding ticket in over 15 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla had an option to have fuckhueg speed numbers on the tablet so you could just read it peripherally if you had the autisms.

Otherwise, since you have a big GPS map which people *do* regularly scan, may as well put your speed and charge level indicators on it.
>>
>>16925705
Yes, but Tesla drivers think watching movies while driving is acceptable. Maybe driving by feel is a bit too highbrow for this crowd.
>>
>>16925597
>being this much of an apologetic shill
There are literally zero reasons to not put either a digital cluster or a HUD in front of a driver. Saying no to both provides zero advantages and forces people to adapt to the atrocious iPad. Not to mention that the latter basically becomes a single point of failure in the car. Basically this whole design decision is there to force people into running Autopilot and furthering Tesla's business goals. Despicable.
>>
>>16925733
>literally zero reasons to not put either a digital cluster or a HUD in front of a driver
First thought: RHD/LHD manufacturing becomes simpler as the same dash can be used in both
>>
>>16925733
>>16925747
Second thought:
/o/ is always bitching and moaning about reduced visibility and high beltlines, but when someone comes along and chops a few inches off of the sight line in front of the driver by eliminating the gauge hump, this is all of a sudden a problem?

RHD/LHD cost savings are negligible. Steering column/pedal port are there anyways. HUD preserves visibility while providing necessary info.

why do you need to read your gauges frequently in the first place?

Putting the info where people are going to look anyway (the huge, easy to read GPS map) is a simple and practical answer.
>>
>>16918893
my digital dash shut down the other day, said it exceeded safe temps.

It wasn't even 90F. Summers here usually sit around 105. What sorta poofter shit is this? Had to drive around the city guessing my speed and hoping the engine temp was doing fine cause I had no fuckin warning lights.

Fuck your shitty digital tech. Fuck it up its stupid asses.
>>
>>16925807
>Putting the info where people are going to look anyway
I don't look there because I'm focused on the road. And yes I do glance my gauges fairly frequently. Speedtraps are a thing I drive through frequently enough to want to know how fast I'm going.

This is a nice-ish interior in an EV that cost a whole lot less than a Tesla. I'd rather have this in a 100k car than a fucking iPad.

Mercedes did the same thing with the C classes I mentioned. The materials are probably nicer but if the design sucks who cares really (also maybe these are different trim levels so IDK if it's really the generation that is nicer or not)

Problem with the Model 3 is $35,000 starting.

The average transaction price will be around $50k probs. It won't be the revolution people think it will be.

I'm sure it will be a good car to drive as Teslas tend to be, but it isn't the beginning of the Electric era.

Leave it to Merc, VW et al when they have their new sub-brands fully up to speed in 2020. Remember that Teslas are bought by tech fans, not car fans. It'll take a big player with petrolhead rapport like VW to truly take electric mainstream.

I do despise Audi though, the idea of a FWD luxury car is self defeating.

More like the FWD version's weight distribution is terrible because they need to fit the Quattro system as well.
Like the Giulia QV forms the base for all Giulias, the Quattro version is the base for all Audis (except the A3/TT).

>Audis are FWD based
Alright, I'll humor you a bit more. If they'd design the FWD versions first (Quattro based on FWD version), why would they not just go with a transverse engine layout?

The FWD versions have stupid engine placement so they have to make minimal changes to the Quattro version, they basically fit a transmission with the center diff removed so it only drives the front wheels.
Hell, there have been multiple cases where you could just bolt Quattro bits onto an FWD model and turn it into a Quattro version, just like that.

Quattro is mechanical, 4Matic is electronic. Again, Quattro """"Ultra"""" can fuck off.

>They know they have to make FWD versions, so they can't just do a RWD style AWD design
Bit more complicated than that. Most RWD-based AWD systems have a differential next to or underneath the engine, leading to either the engine (and with it the CoG) being raised up or a driveshaft running through the sump or block.
Audi places their entire driveline in a straight line, which results in the engine being pushed forward more than one might like. Then for the FWD version they pretty much just fit a transmission with the center diff removed, so the engine stays in said position.
Both methods have their own drawbacks and advantages.

As I said, FWD based design.
>Both methods have their own drawbacks and advantages.
The drawbacks of Audi's outweight any possible advantages it might have.

>>
>>16930957
>As I said, FWD based design
Except it's not. It's a pretty elegant system really, even power distribution between all wheels with minimal extra bulk (driveshafts and diffs mainly). Just the engine, transmission, rear diff, and front- and rear halfshafts.
Hell, it was good enough for Subaru to use a similar layout and have massive success in rallying.
>>
When they introduced the Model 3, I thought that the interior was a prototype. But no, apparently they decided to not put anything there, starting with the instrument cluster.
