Galvanised cars. Were there notable ones? Why did they discontinue this?
Were they just not strong enough? I feel like undercarriage galvanisation would be much better than having them rust down to nothing after 20 years. Was it because the zinc would flake off paint faster than regular painted steel?

Quite the contrary, late '80s-early '90s double galvanized cars have absolutely god-tier rustproofing, pic related is a great example.
The reason they suddenly disappeared around 2000 is, llike always, stricter EU environment regulations, since zinc is toxic as hell.

Later Volvo 240s were galvanized. I'm pretty sure 740s and 940s were as well.

Seconding this, later 80's and onward Volvos were galavanized up to the belt line. I still see later production 240's on the road despite living in the northeast.

Not true, people upgrade for no other reason than having the latest and greatest. Such is life in consumer-centric America, but at least I get good second hand shit for cheap.
