I've decided I'm keeping the R40.

Left Bag: 2 person Tent, camping quilt
Right Bag: Rain Suit, base layer, Rain/cold gloves, Helinox Ground chair, sleeping pad
Top Bag: External battery, GoPro, misc cables, rolled up hoodie to simulate a small amount of food
Rear Pockets: Empty but have enough space for all my tools in one and a large water bottle in another

Basically everything I would need except a camp stove, but I haven't factored in a tank bag yet so I think I'll be fine.

sure is, bike could totally use a slipper clutch, it's very easy to get the rear end out of shape on entrance to those tight corners with the huge braking zones.

The trick is to revmatch well but also to slip the clutch a little bit, especially if you're coming into a 2nd gear corner, really slip that clutch out after the rev match and keep the torque to the rear wheel smooth.

However: all this shouldn't matter on the street, you won't be braking that hard outside of the track for the engine braking to become a problem, you're just seriously manhandling the controls and you don't have to worry about cornering better if you're at that phase of noobdom.

Remember: it's almost never the bike, it's always the rider.

>>16896329
>My ultimate purpose is to drag knee and learn proper body position

Worked for me. (and yes i'm posting the track pictures again, blow me)

The SV is a great bike for learning both these things, very forgiving for the most part, stable as a rock even without a steering damper. clip ons but not a torture rack.

They're been trying to make the motorcycle market into the car market for years so that they can sell over 9000 boring Honda Civics, except as bikes.

Basically they've made a ton of boring shit for a long time. The new lackluster Africa Twin and the awesome but basically a toy Grom are their most standout bikes in a long time

The kind where you open a fucking book for once in your life. Before Honda led Japan into blowing the fuck out the British and Americans the market generally consisted of scooter tier small bikes and unreliable fiddly enthusiast bikes for the hardcore. Making fun motorcycles accessible to more people (like cars) is what allows all the Japanese bikes you like today to exist.

Some of the difference is likely that bikes were so shit in the past that you had to be a complete masochist to complain that a Honda was too refined or boring. Even the 954 is so loved because it's an easier bike to ride than the K2.

i have them, i'd recommend buying something at a higher price point

the good
>full leather construction
>cheap full gauntlet
>solid knuckle protector
>good feel on the controls

the bad
>can pull them off my hands, fully fastened, with a bit of force
>knuckle protector marks easily if it ever comes into contact with anything remotely harder than it
>lack of any additional hard parts or sliders leaves it feeling incomplete
>lower palm feels inadequately padded

they're cheap for a reason. i'd probably opt for something better desu

not who you replied to but I tried on those exact gloves yesterday because I noticed how cheap they were and my gloves (SP2) are getting pretty ratty.

The wrist protection seems really weak. I know you still need full movement of your wrist (can't be like a motorcycle boot) but it seemed to offer no support at all.

Maybe it's just because my gloves have gotten wet so many times the leather is hard as fuck?

Option 1: put on a top rack and pannier mounts. It is now a sport-touring bike.

Option 2: Self-flagellate and lash a mixture of various bags to the bike to try and carry the same load, but more slowly (lolaero) and more inconveniently if you actually need to get at anything you're carrying. Cheaper though.

Hahaha holy shit what fucking shysters!
Check the Bowtex website: http://www.bowtex.com/product-page/bowtex-kevlar-leggings-unisex
Look at all those EN/ISO numbers, must be proper safe right? Fuck no! Those are just the ISO standards for TESTING fabrics for certain metrics (e.g. 'how to test the tensile strength' and 'how to test the weight per unit area')! Said standards say fucking NOTHING about actually needing to meet any required performance levels. That would be something like EN 13595-2:2002 which is the abrasion level test for motorcycle clothing (which they do not even claim to have passed).
And at no point do they even half-assedly claim to be CE approved. The things could be made of wet tissue and everything they actually claim would still be true, because they haven't claimed shit in terms of actual protection. Be careful of the old scam of slapping 'CE approved' on a product that has CE approved protective inserts too: that doesn't necessarily mean the garment has been CE approved as a piece (i.e. it could have no abrasion resistance whatsoever).
>>
>>16897838
Top tips for people who aren't me (and therefore don't fap to standardisation documents):

- If it's not 'CE Approved' (not 'CE certified' or any other junk): It's not worth shit

- If it didn't come with a CE approval test report (usually a little booklet, sometimes loose sheets): it's not worth shit

- Read the damn booklet. Did they actually test for impact resistance and abrasion resistance, or did they just do impact-test on the inserts?

- If it was sold as 'CE Cat 2', did it actually MEET Cat 2 for ALL tests, or just one cherry-picked test?

Reposting because I didn't get any serious replies during american time.

I gotta say the engine braking on the SV650 is huge and if you don't revmatch perfectly before a corner or if you don't have perfect throttle/clutch control you're pretty much fucked. When you try to go fast and stay in the powerband, of course.

I don't think you niggers should suggest it as a starting bike, it scares the shit out of me and it's hard to improve and concentrate on things like body position and leaning.

How's the engine braking on an i4 600 in the powerband, at 8k or whatever, compared to the SV?
>>
>>16897861
SV is a vtwin, cucco
A 90° one at that
This means it's very peppy in the midrange

You're not meant to chop the throttle ever, especially mid corner
And i4 is smoother by nature, but a 600 will also have nearly double the power

All in all git gud and lrn2throttle
>>
>>16897861
i dont recommend the sv650 as a starting bike but for the reasons you listed its a good starting bike

mine is very forgiving and corrects all the shit i fuck up. i have a cbr 500r, and if i were on youre bike i would probably be dead already. but thats how you learn properly, in my opinion lol
>>
Note to self: to much oil makes clutch slippy
>>
>>16897861
The less cylinders the more engine braking.

So you suggest starting on an I4?
>>
>>16897861
>if you don't revmatch perfectly before a corner or if you don't have perfect throttle/clutch control you're pretty much fucked
Nigga, you;re on a V-TWIN. How dod you fuck up so bad that you need to shift DURING a corner? Corner, then shift.
And try not to let the back end slip out on those tears you're crying for the imaginary milliseconds you think you've lost.
>>
>>16897861

>>
>>16897875
>You're not meant to chop the throttle ever, especially mid corner
Obviously, that's the point. I meant that even if you by mistake release a bit of the throttle midcorner the huge engine braking will fuck you up.

I'm not saying this happens to me, I'm saying that the thought of it happening scares the shit out of me sometimes and it slows my learning process a lot.

>>16897876
I rode the CB500F at the riding school, actually it was my first bike, and it's a fucking joke to ride compared to the SV650. It was so fucking easy.

>>16897903
You tell me. If there's no engine braking, I would say so.

>>16897911
>How dod you fuck up so bad that you need to shift DURING a corner?
What? I don't shift during a corner, I mean downshifting before a corner.

As a side note how do people manage to hold the throttle with all the fingers, brake with all the fingers before a corner and return all the fingers on the throttle all in one movement without releasing or upsetting the throttle? I don't get it.
>>
>>16897917

>>16897922
>how do people manage to hold the throttle with all the fingers, brake with all the fingers before a corner and return all the fingers on the throttle all in one movement

Practice. Some bikes also have better brakes that require less input for the same stopping power than other bikes.
>>
>>16897941
>practice
Okay but how the fuck do they keep the throttle steady when they remove the fingers, with part of the palm (the part closer to the wrist)?
I don't understand, to me it seems like they simply remove the hand and place it back to use the brake.
>>
>>16897958

At that price point and size I'd wager it's built on par with the cheap chink systems. I wouldn't expect decent audio on either end, nor their claimed 8 hours talk time.

If I had a limited budget where I couldn't get the 10/20 series I'd personally just go with a no name chink system with a bigger battery and probably put a nicer speaker/mic set on it.

I love these triples and will sing their praises all day long. The older Tigers were a little rougher around the edges but the power plant is solid. Slight shortcomings in suspension and braking, the bike is a bit heavier than I would like, but they handle well. You hardly ever see them on the road, which is nice too.

dear lord, I'm just trying to tell you that you're never gonna brake hard enough for it's strong engine braking to be a problem on the road, you've just got arse technique and need to stop worrying about the bike and just learn to ride because the bike is fine.
>>
>>16898367
Braking has nothing to do with what I was talking about. I thought I was clear about it.

You're about to corner and you downshift, keeping the revs high to stay in the powerband (for the SV that's about 6k or?) and accelerate faster once you're out of the corner. What I'm talking about is the "fear" that if for some random reason you let go of the throttle or jerk it the insane engine braking will upset the bike like crazy.

Do you always keep some fingers on the brake when you corner? Or after you trailbrake, if you do that?

after I start braking my throttle will not open again until I've turned in (depending on the corner)

You don't brake for the corner then get back on the throttle, then tip in, then get off the throttle...then get back on it, that's overly complicated.

Brake and downshift, use the throttle only for blipping here.

(throttle remains closed)

turn in and taper off brakes

Take fingers completely off brakes at this point and move them to the grip.

crack throttle to stop decceleration

Maintain neutral throttle for middle part of the turn (this is longer or shorter depending on the corner, sometimes you will maintain a neutral throttle (neither accelerating nor decelerating) for a long time, other times it'll not really even exist and you'll start accelerating immediately, larger degree bends will usually have you maintaining longer).

Begin accelerating more as you tip the bike up on exit.

Repeat.

now obviously you shouldn't be doing anything as extreme as this webm on the road but that'll give you an idea of the sequence.

>>16898274
>What's that?
Form your hand into a C looking from the side (make a duck with your hand, but with all your fingers flat). Put this over the throttle. Grip the throttle with your palm and thumb (remember you push the bars, not pull, so this also encourages you not to 'hang' on them). Fingers stay extended to clear the brake, if you need to brake you can curl one or more fingers to provide sufficient force.
Lazy road-riding variant has the thumb and first two fingers curled around the throttle, with braking done by the extended 3rd and pinkie (because why are you trying to do stoppies on the road anyway?) to easily provide enough grip unless you brakes are hilariously shit.

yeah its not particularly safe. Being on the motorway is fine, just stay in left hand lane and cruise there, plenty of HGVs going at 55-60mph so I can just follow one at that speed.

The problem is merging onto it from the sliproad, because it is slow to accelerate and can't accelerate out of the way of oncoming traffic, so you have to be very careful and calculate it well.

I can't wait to be old enough to do direct access and get myself a proper bike.

if you're going that slow and if you're that noob, don't worry about the front brake.

If you want to work on your body position and get some lean on then just don't go fast enough on the straights to need it.

I tell people this all the time if you want to work on your body position just ride around slow enough to not use the front brake and work on your lines and body position, just roll off and on.

Later you can add the speed and braking once you are comfortable with the sequence and cornering.

I've driven a car for 4 years. I'm still not sure exactly what went wrong. I was fine for the off road part, instructors were happy with me and said I was doing well. Got onto the road, panicked and lost control of the bike twice. They said I was dangerous and sent me home. I think it may be partly because I wore trainers for the off-road and then put on boots for the on-road. I wasn't used to them and was not able to shift properly.

Shame, really. I was having fun. Guess I'm not cut out for bikes.

All of the Japanese 500cc+ ptwin road bikes will do 100k+ with regular maintenance, really. ER-6, TDM850/900, NC700, CB500, GS500, CBR500, Ninja 650 etc. etc. etc. It's more up to what you're looking for. BMW also makes good parallel twin bikes but I don't know how reliable they are.

Most people likely got put off by the scope of your question. It's like asking "what I4 is gud?" without providing further criteria. For your purposes, if it's Japanese, new(ish), 500cc+ and not beaten/neglected it's gonna fit the bill. The rest depends on what kinda bike you're looking for, for iron butt stuff it's gotta have good ergos so a standard/naked. If you want wind protection go adventure, e.g. the couple adventure bikes I mentioned (NC700 has a windscreen version, too, I think it's the X model)

I prefer to stay nice and low on the tank.

My general "marker" is getting low enough to touch the forearm on the top of the tank but you're probably not gonna be able to do that on the naked bike with the higher bars so just get as low as you can without feeling like you're compromising your ability to operate the controls. I've never needed this but a lot of people recommend trying to just "drop your elbow" and the rest of the upper body will follow.

So in sequence:

So you get your booty off to the side of the seat.

You brake upright.

as you're turning in, lead with your upper body moving it off to the side and a bit down.

Keep your body leaned down as you exit the corner, only move the torso back when you're nearly upright.

ONLY move your bum back to the middle of the seat if you have a big straight coming up, if you have another corner of the same radius you can just leave your booty where it is and you've just saved some time and energy by only moving it once for 2 corners, if there's another turn to the other direction swap all the way over.

At a lot of tracks you'll only ever be in the middle of the seat down the main straight.

this is true about California as well, just to clarify. Cost of living (i.e., housing) is much less of a problem outside the major metros, and general liberal faggotry is only a problem to the extent that urban power centers control what goes on in the rest of the state (which is a considerable extent, but not total.).

Of course, the jobs are in the major metro areas where the faggotry is worst, so.

I would imagine a turnout of around 15-25, but last time the guy planning crashed and gave up on planning the meet so no one went.
There are 2 of us planning this time so that shouldn't happen
Anyways, who knows. I'm saying 15-25 based on how many votes each area has, maybe more people will make the trip or maybe people will back out. Hard to know right now but there will be an RSVP type thing so we can reserve camping space and figure out food etc, and whenever people have signed up with that we will have a real number.

I have a 2012 ER6-n, it handles the motorways here pretty well cruising along at 80, no issues.

It's not the most exciting bike, but due to recent circumstances, I've been royally screwed and lost everything but my bike, so i'm stuck with it for the forseeable future, very easy to work on though if you enjoy wrenching yourself etc,

I still regret selling my Triumph Speed Four though, know where the guy who bought it lives, tempted to go steal it back or something.
