G'day mates.

Looking to buy my 1st car and two options seem to stand out where I live.

2008 Holden Barina Auto with 80,000k's ($4,800)

2006? Hyundai Elantra with 125,000ks ($4,500)

1st one is private and the other is from a dealer, will probably recheck the Elantra tomorrow.

Also any general advice?

You'd do well not to listen to the ill informed laymen. The only intricate thing with these is setting valve clearances often, as a pre-requisite of desmodromic valve train (presumic it is desmo). Other than that, the 90s era aircooled Dukes are reasonably fuss free.
>>
>>16896994
No you're right the LAMS bike that is close to the power to weight limit is slower than all the other LAMS bikes that are also close to the limit.

>>
>>16897543
Meh, i bought a $500 shitbox TJ as a runaround and it doesn't burn anything, only loses a little bit of oil with the valve/rocker cover seals onto the headers making it smell

Not an expensive fix just take a bit of time for the back one, gonna do it and the plugs at the same time probable next weekend

It's extremely good fun destroying other cars at the lights in something worth $500, though.
>>
>>16897543

MAGNA A SHIT. Just as shit as a fancy updated shitbox astron engine.

>>16897586
No that's just the oil leaking out of the engine.
>>
>>16897595
Oh yeah, magna. I forgot.
>>
>>16897569
Your old one had a faked service history and you bought a thrashed shitbox that had 3 oil changes in it's life.

Mine has 300,000km on it and it doesn't burn any that isn't dripping on the headers from the seals, the one i had a few years ago (ralliart) had 160k on it and didn't lose anything even with 5w-30 full synthetic.
>>
>>16897609
There are heaps of magnas blowing smoke. Theu are shit, its common.

It wasnt faked service history either. It was all dealer serviced. They are scumny but not dumb enough to fake service history.
>>
>>16897613
Yes, and there are heaps of 3800s blowing smoke and heaps of single cam falcons blowing smoke.

There are also heaps of both that aren't thrashed with changes done properly that don't burn oil, just like magnas.
>>
As someone who is on the road doing interstate, I can truthfully say that Magnas are the most common car to be blowing smoke. Along with Patrols after they have idled for a bit then take off.
>>
>>16897614
Falcons are usually just ticking away singing the song of their people.
>>
>>16897619
>tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick
>>
>>16897615
And as a mechanic who works on tons of shit every day, i can truthfully say that magnas are just as reliable if not slightly more so than any other type of car with the same kms, outside of obvious shit like barra falcons (which run forever but pop brakes, center bushes and wheel bearings every 5 minutes) and corollas (which are boring and pop CVs when you do hektik skidz).

>>16897619
My favorite single cam falcon moment came when someone overheated one and warped the valve/rocker cover.
As in, they got a new head after it overheated and put the cover that was on the old one on, and it kept leaking oil. Was damn impressive.
>>
>>16897626
They are reliable, burning oil doesnt stop them running. Keep the oil topped up and they are fine. Mainly it's the valve seals on them.

Looks like the shitbox will be getting a new head gasket and a bit of a freshen up for the head after running the figures. Currently losing oil at 1/150km and water at 2L/350km.

Seeing as we have at least 13000km for the trip, its cheaper to do the gasket and skim head if its still able to be saved(probably not)

Nigger i don't think magnas can do no wrong, the factory brakes are almost as shit as falcon falcon ones and NEED to be changed for AWD or 380 parts immediately, the back of the engine is a pain in the ass to get to, the interior is generally held together with hopes and dreams and they seem to go through globes a lot quicker than most other cars.

The thing is, compared to fucking falcons and commodores they're better in every single way, compared to a camry they're a lot more fun and if you get one with properly done suspension riding on 245s they handle very well for a large sedan.

They're also just like subarus and certain nissans and every part from every other mitsubishi from +/- 10 years of the production date will fit. Evo 3-9 brakes, Evo 3-6 steering wheel, Evo clutches, Pajero 10:1 comp pistons for the 9:1 or 9.4:1 magna, 380 cams, AWD/Ralliart brakes or even bigger 380 brakes, FTO LSD gearbox, and huge portions of the little shit you don't think of like the air-con controls from galant/legnums.

They're just straight up good, and a TJ Sports/VRX is an excellent first car.

I bought an Exa today. 1988, CA18DE, bone stock except for a shitty head unit, and after attacking it with a pressure washer, confirmed no leaks.

Drives nicer than expected, even after test driving it - the power steering is useless and it understeers a little, but overall handles very well. Pull harder and faster than I'd have thought.

The only difference between the VR-X and the base model engine is the rear muffler, and changing any part of the exhaust apart from the headers does nothing. In fact, the VR-X is a little bit heavier from added features, a base model with the rear muffler unbolted is probably quicker.

Ralliarts do 14.7-14.8 with half decent tyres, and a base model manual with the 6G75 (3.8L) swap will be in the low 14s, some even in 13s (hence the $1300 thing)

I used to drive a Getz. I'm pretty sure I'm immunised against boredom now.

Anyway, what's boring about it?

Eventual plan, if I hang on to it long enough. First priority is the brakes & suspension, then look into conversions, probably turbo. I know the CA18DET is common for it since it's not a huge change but adds way more headroom for power.

Aside from everything?

Literally all it has going for it is the fact it looks sporty, but the sad reality is it's slower and handles worse than any sporty hatch of that era but with none of the practicality.

It's a car you buy because of how it looks, not how it drives.

People own cars for different reasons. I like it because it looks weird as shit and it was dirt cheap. I have access to my girlfriend's WRX if I wanna drive a modern, quick car. I don't wanna chase quarter mile times, I wanna smoke darts with the roof off. There's enough room in the back for my shit. Boring to you isn't boring to everyone.

Why not just roll up a $50 note and smoke it.

Reaction time is irrelevant to an ET, and shifting is not a challenging... But yes, it's the first 60 foot that'll dictate a good run.
