The two usa states I have lived in require the dealer to verify you have a drivers license. So you are required by law to show your DL to them so that they can get the info (photocopy).

Another reason to get a name is to check if it is listed in a computer as a "JOY RIDER" who keeps test driving cars year after year without every buying one, then no wonder you refuse to show them your driver license.
