Honda: Boring. "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" was their actual advertising slogan for years

Kawasaki: Always fast. Don't mind much if you die. The ZX10 is the current record holder for most riders complaining about how very dead they are.

Suzuki: Has a line of street-legal racebikes. The rest of their catalog is suspect. Makes the popular memebikes "Drz-bad-big-end-bearing" and "Gs5-slow"

Yamaha: BRAAAAP! Also, Hipsters. Yamaha named their cruiser line the Virago, meaning "a domineering, violent, or bad-tempered woman"

Also this is the recommended oil for it.

I get confused when people are so apprehensive to pay for service. If I didn't know how to service my own stuff, I'd be willing to pay to maintain it. $300 a year isn't much in the big picture

Either pay for the dealership to do it, or learn to do it yourself and save hundreds of $ per year. Either way, it's just part of owning any vehicle.

>>16866434
Yeah, valve adjustment is around 3.6k miles on the 690.

Meh, MSRP on those is like $5000 or maybe $5500, so with only 700 miles on it, that's not too bad. I think 3.5k is a little low, but 4.5k might be too much. For only $500 more you could have a brand new one.

Also it depends on if he's had the break-in service done.

Poor college student here, how much should I be saving for a Ninja 250 (or similar) and gear? Southern California if that matters.
>>
>>16866562
700 miles?

ok so List is $4999, and the dealers have no margin on this model because they are supposed to be "participating" in bringing in newbe riders to KTM world. So all the profit is in the $400 "destination charge", along with whatever else the dealer thinks they can get away with.

I bought mine off the floor in November, and there was a $400 "customer cash" promotion going on from Corporate, so the dealer (OC KTM in Orange CA) took that as the delivery fee, and charged me nothing for setup and doc preperation.

Now, other people I've talked to have been soaked for:
$400 delivery
$500 setup (takes 2 hours, $250/hr shop time?)
$200 "doc preperation fee", which is where you pay for the dealers cost of doing business.

Point I'm trying to make, is this dood could have paid $6500 for this bike. And now it's time for it's first service and and it took two years to get there? Odd, but that's why he may be pricing it that way, everyone wants to get their money back...

Before making him an offer, I'd get some dealer quotes for a 2016. BTW First service is $250, or $400 if you want the valves adjusted, which for some reason run tight at the first service. If this guy hasn't had the service done, that's more pressure to put on him.
>>

I'm thinking about picking up an Indian Scout 60 now that I have just found out about them. I've watched reviews and they seem pretty solid. Anyone have any personal stories on Indians, Scouts, or what I may have to look for going into this purchase?

My previous riding experience was a Ninja 650r before I totaled it from gravel on the road during a turn.

I've only done a demo ride and it's not my kind of bike, so most of my issues with it won't matter to you. But it is severely under braked, it's a ~600 lb bike with a hundred horsepower and a single front disc, you'll be better off holding your hands out and relying on the air resistance.

I was looking to get a cruiser type next anyways because that is exactly what I found myself doing rather than driving aggressively with my Ninja.

It depends on where you're riding, where I live the biggest rock you're going to see is fist sized and the only thing you'll hit a bash plate on is crossing a tree, which won't do much, if I were riding out in the desert or mountains, yea I could see it coming in handy.

I recommend riding each, I don't know your local dealership's policy on test rides, but it would be a good idea to ask. Racing paper only goes so far.

Completely new to riding, one question if coming up to a normal stop where I've got a good hundred yards of clearance, do I just grab the clutch and brake (both) slightly? Should I downshift at the same time?

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Braking_while_downshifting/Blipping_the_throttle

Is that to use engine braking with the brakes?
>>
>>16867274
you can just brake and then when revs get low, clutch in and start shifting down
>>

>>
>>16867274
Blipping = rev matching, it exists with cars too, you really don't have to worry much about it.

If you're slowly coming to a stop just slowly downshift as you're slowing down.
>>
>>16867281

Thanks.

So downshift in and out of each gear or just brake and clutch straight down into 1st (complete stop)?
>>
>>16867274
blipping is so your downshifts aren't as jerky. Here's a simplified version:

60mph in 6th gear = 4k rpm
60mph in 5th gear = 6k rpm
60mph in 4th gear = 8k rpm

If you wanted to downshift from 6th to 5th, but wanted to stay at 60mph, you'd give a blip to get the revs a bit higher as you're downshifting.
>>
Just clutch in the whole way through the gears.

I have personal experience with it, it isn't pretty. But when you're alone in a hotel room all week it feels better than it should.

Everyone grieves annon. Don't let it become you though yeah? Buy a shitbike to pull apart and work on putting it back together. It's hard to find the motivation to do shit but it's as simple and as complicated as not thinking about it and just doing it. Like "fuck it let's get a new job or go for a run or such and such" it may be blunt but shit happens, it's how you handle said shit that helps you. Like yeah you may have an issue. But instead of focusing on it, focus on what you're going to do about it.

I'm thinking of removing the front cowl off of my SV650. Has anyone done this and would it be waterproof? I ride her every day and leave her outside overnight and I'm worried that some wiring might be exposed.

Never downshift to first when you're already stopped.

Having said this I wanted to ask if I'm damaging my bike by shifting to neutral while stopped, because the problem is that having bent the shift lever I almost never seem to shift into neutral the first time and always end up shifting to second and maybe first once again before actually hitting neutral.
>>
>>16868218
Why would you damage your bike by shifting into neutral?
>>
>>16867677
>how do you move your weight from one side to the otherside?
What do you mean? Once you've steered it's pretty easy.
>>
>>16868225
Have you read the sencence after that?

>Suzuki is the worst
>but it's not really the worst and even though Yamaha is worst I really want Suzuki to be the worst so I'm gonna lie

Okay.
>>
>>16868238
Why would it damage your bike if you don't manage to find the right position? Besides the "CLONK" when pushing in first in too harsh
>>
>>16868238
Yes, I've read the sentence that you have a fucked shifter.
Shifting into neutral doesn't damage it.
>>
>>16868252
That sound is the correct sound to hear when going into first.

>>
>mfw dbt thinks their shifter clunking when going into gear is a bad thing
What are shifter dogs. If you don't hear a clunk in 1st, something is very wrong.
>>
>>16868256
What about shifting into second and then into first then?
>>16868252
Because I change gears multiple times when stopped?
I dunno, you tell me. Isn't that supposed to wear the gearbox?
>>
Yamaha>Kawasaki>Suzuki>Honda

>prove me wrong
>protip: you can't
>>
>>16868275
That's the normal sequence, shouldn't damage anything.

As long as you use your clutch, shifting shouldn't damage anything. Maybe when you shift for hours without riding might it wear a bit more.
>>
Is the GSXR 250 worth looking into /dbt/?
>>
>>16868281
You're right, I can't.
>>
>>16868286
don't fall for the 250 meme.
>>
>>16868286
it's not a GSXR unless it has 3x that amount of cc's
>>
>>16868275
You're shifting while standing, there is no torque being transferred so you don't stress anything besides your ankle and the bent shifter
>>
>>16867932
Much like (You)r life, no one cares.

If it makes (You) feel better, I have no job and I am struggling to find one because I live in a shit country.

Scout Sixty owner.

My only real complaint is the suspension, too soft up front.

Its plenty fast, its comfy, the exhaust is muted.

Ive never had an issue with the brakes or the weight.

Wind sucks over 70mph.

Tank is a little small, but i can get between 150 and 180 miles on a tank if im not screwing around .
