Long sob story about me being a recovering alcoholic and drug addict not withstanding, I need a hobby. One that will suck up every second I exist, outside work and family time (though honestly, family time has taken a back seat to being fucked up for the past decade)
It looks like there is an SCCA track and active group less than an hour away from me so I started thinking about club racing. (My first choice was to shoot IDPA/USPSA but my lawyers advised against owning firearms for a little while)
Here comes my question. Do you buy dirt cheap, and add parts as you go? (Miata or 240sx) or do you spend a bit more up front and not have to worry about much modding for a little while (Porsche Boxster)?
It seems like I can find a running Miata for about 2k. A running 240sx for about 3k and a running Boxster for 6k... At what point does upfront cost actually pay dividends? Convince me SCCA and racing is my future. Aside from this I can contemplating Bow hunting, or just volunteering my time to Wounded Warriors
gaming is an excellent time sink i've found
Buy a civic strip it down and install a roll cage in it . Bam race car plus parts are cheap when they will break

Better yet if you prefer racing over cars you will have more fun with go karts

Not looking for a time sink per say... looking for a time and money sink. I opened a bank account, and every time I think I can "score" (got off work early, have a day off, wife out of town) I have to put the equivalent amount of money I would have spent, into the account. This is one of the main reasons I havent jumped on Bow hunting as even being a gear queer, its not expensive. If I volunteer for WW, I will make donations every time I want to cheat.
I cant be in the house reguardless of my decision. Sitting idle is begging to relapse

I sadly wouldnt come close to fitting in a kart. It was one of my first ideas actually but I quickly realised it wasnt practical

What state are you in if you don't mind me asking?
Anyway a Miata or Civic hatch is a great idea.
Track Days are reasonably priced but they are stupid fun.

Im in Illinois near Chicago, and Blackhawk Farm is less than an hour away. There are also Chicagoland Motor Speedway weekends, and a bit farther out are Brainerd International, Indianapolis, and a few other tracks in that 8-12 hour circle

If you're looking to throw bits of cash at a car, buy cheap and build it up bit by bit. Don't just go for a boring ass civic (unless you want to). Get something special, something you'll be more likely to hold your money for.

I had that idea, but I am worried about getting in over my head. But a Corvette C5 being 16k before anything else, might be special, but it is rough on the budget. Im realistic and know things are going to break, and chances are good I am going to hit something at some point. With a C5, I cant really afford to fix it for weeks/months at a time. At least with a Boxster/240, that payoff comes quicker.
I know myself, and the cheap quick high will almost always win over the longer more rewarding outcome. (race in 2 weeks, or race in 6 months. Drink tonight or get divorced in 6 months, sort of thing)
btw car porn for bumps

C4 Corvettes are even cheaper. Look into f bodies too, they're cheap and they'll always keep you busy. I'm assuming you'll be working on whatever car yourself? That'll keep you busy and with an old car there's plenty of cheap, minor repairs you can make (broken center console, bit of rust, etc)

cool
dont listen to this anon >>16840437
its possible to have plenty of fun with a civic.
When people think of civics and fun they often think about shitty bodykits and such but read this article and tell me they still don't look fun as shit.

and this

I say this as someone who currently owns a RWD sports car.
if you want to throw handfuls of money at something that probably doesnt really need it but you love it too much to stop; get an e46 m3 or an e39 m5

Boxsters are great on the track, and there's a solid aftermarket dedicated to Spec Boxster racing
Chassis is far more stiff than a Miata to start off with, and all you need to be quick on a track to start off is a set of nice tires, decent brake pads, and fresh fluids

Not op
Too easy to drink and game.
Also not quite social.
With the car thing he can research stuff, practice, compete, wrench... Many more steps than couch surfing.
I'm 2.5 years sober. It's lonely but I feel much better. Good luck to you mate.
Also go to a fuckign gym.
