It originally referred to a specific system of expressways in Tokyo, but now has somewhat taken the form of a verb to describe top speed highway racing, or as a noun to describe any freeway which allows the such.

What about motocross and flattrack?
why are wangan racers so obsessed with porsche 911's? why do they choose those cars in particular? genuinely curious
>>16778458
Duhbs Dohn't Lhie
>>16779454
Porsche makes the full throttle proof, they even state that in the drivers manual.
,,Dieses Fahrzeug ist vollgasfest"
911 also have good aerodynamics and handle verry well, wich is nessesary at high speeds since everything is a corner above 250km/h.
Poersche 911 are usually pretty powerfull even in stock form and have pretty high topspeeds due to their good aerodynamics and are ballanced well due to their RR layout.
-t. german that often drives fast

>The speed limit is 60 km/h on most routes, but 80 km/h on the Bayshore Route, and 50 km/h on the Inner Circular Route.
That is 70s stock 50ccm tier slow.
>>16779589
Oh shit, I found out 1960s 50ccm where faster than that.
The Kreidler Florett RS drove 85km/h stock.
>>16779589
Yep, because illegal races totally abide by speed limits.

I know these races are illegal, but why are the speed limits slower than a 1960s 50ccm?
I litteraly drive doubble the speed most of the time.

Hillclimbing is pretty badass.
No regulations
No co driver
Limited practice runs on the course
No safety barriers
FWD shitboxes can race against ex-formula cars.

That was how it was in that era of Japan mate. That's why it's not so impressive that the mid-night club consistently outran Japanese police, because of the speed restrictions on police cars.
I mean from 1974 to 1987 the top speed limit on any public road was federalized at 55 MPH, so it's not really all that uncommon.
>>16779719
>Was federalized
In the United states* I should add, sorry.
>>16779719
>speed restrictions on police cars
You are joking are you?
>speed limit on any public road was federalized at 55 MPH in the USA
Meanwhile we had a suggested speed, wich means you shouldnĀ“t drive slower or faster than that, but nobody gives a shit if you do, of 130 km/h wich is like 81mph.
>>16779745
>You are joking are you?
Nope. All cars on public roads in Japan were and still are legally required to be limited to 180km/h which includes police cars. Why such an arbitrary high number I have no idea. Even more ironic is that the police bought "domestic" sports cars like FDs NSXs and GTRs with intent to keep up with them but still weren't allowed to remove the limiters.
>>16779745
You ever bothered to google anything in your sad, sorry life mate?
>suggested
So in other words the same case as the Shuto expressway? If police cars are limited to 110 MPH it really does make the idea of getting caught an afterthought after you hit 120.
>>16779778
I should add that I am from germany and we donĀ“t have a universal enforced speed limit on highways, only a suggested speed noone cares about.
Also cars are not required to be limited to any speed here and pretty much any new econobox drives faster than 180km/h.
>>16779774
At least the FDs NSXs and GTRs can keep driving 180km/h in a corner, but that doesnĀ“t help you if you try to catch the same type of car without the limiter...
>>16779812
And what does that have to do with Japan?
You are aware that the country is literally a chain of islands and space is at a premium, thus roads are logically smaller, similar to America vs Europe.
>>16779887
You where quoting my post about the suggested highwayspeed in germany.
