Is it bad to downshift to a low gear if you don't rev the

Is it bad to downshift to a low gear if you don't rev the engine to the redline? Like going from 3rd to 2nd at 50+ kmh? Engine speed would be around 4000-4500 RPMs at that stage I think. Well below the redline.

If it's bad, is it still as bad if you rev match or does it not make a difference?

I am asking if it's bad or not. I thought it was alright if it doesn't redline and blow your engine. I searched on google and some people are saying "blah blah if you downshift to the point where your engine screams it's bad". Define scream. The engine on my honda can get pretty loud when it's over 3000 rpm but the redline on my tach starts from around 6750.

no its not bad, they mean "scream" as bouncing it off the Redline in which case yes it would be fucking awful and you'd probably blow something. but if you're downshifting into 4000 then that's normal

There is nothing wrong with downshifting so long as you don't over rev. Even then, it takes a lot to blow an engine as in, creeping barely over redline won't do it. You'd have to be over revving for a long while and even then modern cars have limiters on them

The limiter doesn't protect the engine if you shift into the wrong gear. If you were going 70 kmh and somehow throw it into 1st gear, the tach would jump to the end of the red line but the actual revs could be even more than that because the drivetrain will pull the engine. At least that's what I have heard.

Oh well yeah definitely, you'd really have to slam the shifter in gear though to get to that point. Also my post was assuming OP wasn't a retard, but yes you're correct

All I was trying to say in my post was, if you go from 3rd - 2nd and the revs go a sliver over redline, no harm will be done

I have revved pretty high a few times and my car still seems to be functioning. I have learned to rev match very recently and have been practicing downshifting every chance I get (the brakes on my car seem worn anyway from all the abuse I put them through so slowing to a stop in low gear is a lot easier for me). As I am new to standard transmission, I think I did over rev at least a handful of times when I was learning the basics. I shifted into second before going 50-60 and made the tachometer jump. I can also feel the "dragging" sensation in my left foot when I release the clutch and the car bucks. I still get the friction feeling in my clutch sometimes if one tap on the gas isn't enough to match the revs even if it doesn't go to red line.

Never felt that before, are you depressing the clutch all the way before you try to rev-match?
