What is the best application of a non-traditional automatic shifter setup?

Column shifters used to be far more popular than they are now. So I would be inclined to say they are fairly traditional, especially in Sedans.
People got rid of them when they started getting rid of front bench seating, and adding a faux sporty consoles 4 door center consoles.

do people ever *accidentally* bump themselves to park or something. I assume there must be some sort of lock so you cant do that.

The Park mechanism is simply a toothed gear (solid with the flywheel or somewhere else in the gearbox) engaging with a small metal piece (solid with the gearbox housing) so it can't turn.
In older autos, if you tried to engage P while moving at above walking speed, the metal piece would simply grind on the toothed gear without engaging.
Modern autos simply refuse to engage P until the car is stationary.
So the risk of engaging P while driving has always been pretty slim

This. Also more important on trucks as I don't lose a bench to a fucking big gulp holder and can actually throw it between D and R when offroad.
