this is specific as fuck and you probably won't take it seriously, but i'm an upper lower middle class balkanfag who is unironically considering buying a yugo as a shitbox, i know they're a bit of a meme in the west but they've got their own mythos in ex-yugoslavia, as the jamaican bobsled team of the automotive industry and they're cheap anyways.
anyways, what should i look for when buying one, what are the usual dissapointments, and what should i replace immediately if i value my life? i kind of doubt that any US anons are driving this piece of shit, but i'm posting on the off chance of some fellow ex-yu homo seeing this.

first of all you may find that what ever you are looking at has hit a tree at some point check front bumper for damage
also rust around the door sills and the rear side window arch
the steel is hot rolled and rusts quickly but this is off set by very good paint and lots of drain holes
the shift link bushings and brakes will be completely fucked as will the door handles and window winder handles
but all that is an easy fix with aftermarket fiat parts
the fabric on the seats wears out a bit
and the seat rails bind easy as does the window regulator mechanism
as for the underpinning
903cc has some overheating and head gasket issues (scored piston lining ahoy)
the 1100 and 1300 love to eat timing belts (bent valves are normal here)
also make sure the clutch cable is in good condition
recommended stock wheel size
5Jx13 ET-35
155/75 SR13
near size to be more careful with ET
(there is very little clearance for the steering arm knuckles) also the rear shock absorbers
5.5Jx13 ET27
165/70 SR13
Zupčasti, ulje motora, ulje mjenjača. kočiona tekućina, pakne.Sve ovo možeš sam, samo ti treba panj, bankina i set alata.
Za yuga nedaj više od 150€. Realno nevrijedi ni tolko.

thanks for the advice guys, i'm sorry i couldn't give you more info on the specific car i've been scoping out, the seller is a douchebag that didn't bother to mention how old or driven it is but i'll grill him when the time's right.
the front suspension is soft and has allot of body roll
and the rear suspension is a bit bouncy
tends to cause allot of understeer then rapid oversteer

We had them in the UK for a short time.
They had some of the best paint quality of some Eastern Bloc cars. Just check for rust in the chassis and body, sills and arches ect.
Again, check for crash damage and shrapnel from the most recent war.
They are very fun to drive, parts for you will be easy to get and with enough maintenance they will last a good while. They are nice to thrash around winding roads.
The Yugo is the JEE TEE ARU of European vehicles; it is one of the few vehicles ever made to have bumper mounted backup lights. The Yugo is also the AE86 of Eastern Bloc cars, it even has the same foglights and wheel well accents. Just paint the openings like where it says 'Yugo 45' black, and add a white line where the turn indicators are located that goes all around the vehicle, and no one would be able to tell the difference.

You're Bernie, aren't you?
I always thought it'd be fun to modify and thrash one.

US-fag here. My dad was telling me a while back about how my mother considered a Yugo around the time I was an infant because they were cheap. They went to look at one and my father put his foot down saying no the moment he saw it. According to him, the hood wasn't aligned right so who knew what else wasn't assembled properly.
She ended up buying a Pontiac 6000 instead.... which my brother subsequently wrecked, and then a Ford Escort wagon to replace that.... and he eventually wrecked that one too. It's actually easier to list the cars my parents owned that my brothers didn't wreck.
