As for OP honestly the closest thing you will get the bronco like perfomance and style is an H2 which is way better than the H3 and way cheaper than the H1, luxury inside and incredibly roomy, the stock engines are not the best but decent enough however the swap to a 6.6 diesel can be done really cheap and turns them into amazing powerhouses

Agreed. OP have you considered getting an older Bronco from a rust-free state? I had an F-150 with the 300 I6 which was great, think they put that into the Bronco. Don't know which trans is best though, maybe stay away from early E4OD.

Modern day equivalent probably means he does not care for how aged those vehicles are, as rugged as a bronco is you just do not get that sealed in comfy feeling you get in newer cars as well as many life comforts.

I wish old cars held up well but they really just do not, the only old/classic I own anymore is my 1970 Cadillac Eldorado with the un nerfed 8.2L 500... which I can never get rid of just because of the absolute american feel

Honestly my '90 F150 felt more solid and comfy than my '02 Rav4.

You should really try a new suv past 05, especially luxury ones. Lexus, cadillac even the H2 were absurdly comfy cozy to spend the night in with someone with the back seats down with rain hitting the windows
