Looking at this this week.
Hoping to get it for $5k even.
i know that's 'spensive for a miata but as far as I can tell the cheap miata ship has sailed and those are the wheels I want on an unmolested low mile car

What's the verdict on the mx-5 RF? They turned a lot of heads at the reveal, but I'm not seeing many on the road. Is it the price that's hurting it? I feel as if the RF does well we could see Mazda start seriously looking at a faster version of the Miata. Maybe an enthusiasts model.

I live in Columbia and I'm about to put my 99 on the market for 5,500. She's sitting on 15x7 Kosei K1's, Flyin Miata coils, and has Hard Dog roll, door, and harness bars. Shit tons of maintenance too, t belt and water pump, new oem clutch, new soft top and rain rail, oem battery, lots more. Only downside is the mileage (163k) but she's in decent condition all things considered

M8, you aren't going to see a lot on the road because if I remember correctly the RF is just a made to order special edition. Only the elite autists who have connections at their dealerships are going to get their hands on it. It's not a mass produced model like the ND

The previous owner was trailering the car to his summer house in Myrtle Beach and pulled it too far into one of the posts of the trailer and cracked a lot of the paint off. I didn't care for the first couple of months but it started blowing off, so I pulled the bumper cover and sanded the areas down before dipping it. No shots of the interior but it's black on black with door bars, a foamectomied driver seat, fold out cup holder, and a Mazda3 shift knob. Too dark for pics but can snap some tomorrow

Dipped front bumper here, not the prettiest but it works

Goddamn, you can still find older ones with under 100k miles?

I'm coming from being a saab 99/900 enthusiast, where the engine is a brick shithouse, the transmission is made of glass and your front a-arm mounting points love to rust out and collapse while you're driving.

After driving my friends 243WHP NB turbo miata before he wrecked it, I'm fucking hooked. All around wishbones handle like a dream, and the miata seems to be the only sporty car with them these days.

i agree with that but he was right about the miata having a ton of potential. you can make one into a drift missle an autocross car and ive even seen one be used for rallycross. then theres always the fact that it makes a very fun affordable daily driver.
>>
>>16704317
I got into miatas after I was a Volvo guy, so I understand a little bit where you're coming from.

Good condition miatas are out there with all kinds of millage. I would happily buy one with 200,000 miles if it was well kept. Getting up to 250ish whp is pretty easy, but you're in the range where you might want to start looking at improving your cooling system and adding a dedicated oil cooler. You won't need to build an engine, but if you were feeling up to it forged rods for about $400 could be worth some real peace of mind.

Spend some time on miataturbo.net and don't stop reading. Pick up a 94+ miata with a torsen rear end, put some wheels on and lower it. Then throw in a megasquirt ECU and start looking at going turbo. You'll love every second of it.
>>
>>16703676
It should cost $2k honestly. My friend and I have bought multiple for that price or less. Usually less. People just hype up the price. My current slut cost me $1k, and $300 to get it running. But it had a decent body and a lsd. You just have to look hard for the deals and jump on them in a snap. My friend and I drove 2 1/2 hours at 10pm at night, put a slave cylinder on some ladies miata at 1am, bled it and test drove it, then paid her and drove it 2 1/2 hours home. Its how you get the deals. That's how you get a 95 M edition with a hardtop for $1800. Just have patience, but throw down effort when needed.

It depends on the car.
My Miata has 202xxx km on it (bought with about 193xxx) and it generally runs great. Few points I need to fix here and there, but that's because the previous owner was a shithead.

There are plenty of Miatas here that are well kept, and even if not, they generally can take some abuse in my experience.

The biggest thing you need to worry about is rust I guess.

It's 2020. During the day, I ride self-driving cars.

During the night, I hunt them.
._._._.

The Night has finally come.

I waited patiently. I am used to it.

No one thought of me as a threat.
After all, I only drove a Miata. It has no EcoBoost.

Taylor Swift got into her self-driving ecoboost car. It was a tight fit because the car was so small and her legs were long.

Her ecoboost car took off efficiently and drove towards her next venue.

I wielded my stickshift Miata efficiently, darting between all the self-driving cars.

Too polite and full of defensive driving algorithms, the Tesla, FCA, & GM self-driving cars made way for me as they tried to avoid collisions. I took advantage of that.

I praised the inventors of the Miata. "Thank you for not filling the world full of EcoBoost"

After all, if the world was full of EcoBoost, I would be at a disadvantage on the road.

But the road is not only for ecoboosted cars. Those with skill are able to coax success from non-boosted cars by driving cleverly.

I often am forced to drive cleverly on the Road.

After all, I only have a Miata.

Pulling alongside Taylor Swift's self-driving car, I noticed the model type was known to be one that refused to run over people-shaped objects or trolleys.

I moved in front and pushed the button to send gas from the canisters to several blow up dolls.

They inflated immediately.

The wind picked them up and dropped then into the road in front of the self-driving car.

True to its algorithm, Taylor Swift's self-driving car preferred to crash the car gently into the road barrier instead of running over people or trolleys in the roadway.

Take that you ecoboost Bitch!

Sure, Taylor Swift was known to go through boyfriends at a prodigious rate.

But why did she have to drop me as her boyfriend? She didn't drop me for personality or looks. The reason stung.

She dropped me as her boyfriend
when
she
found
out
I
drove
a
Miata.

I'm now a 97 Miata owner, 93k miles on it and I picked it up for $2700

Problem is it has a high idle. It idles at 800rpm until I tap the gas then it sticks to 1500rpm until I unplug and replug the IAC then it drops back down to 800rpm until I tap the pedal again.

Would that be a stuck IAC? Any way to clean it?
>>
>>16707303
What happens if you manually open and close the throttle (from the engine bay, not the gas pedal)?
>>
>>16707326
Same exact thing, the rpms stick to 1500rpm with the slightest movement of the throttle body until I unplug and replug the IAC connector then it goes back to normal

let me give you guys a pro tip.

"rust free" doesn't exist when it comes to drivers cars like the miata. this guy thinks that just because it doesn't rust in the typical spot like the wheel wells and rocker panels that its rust free but go look at the undercarriage. go look at the frame rails. go look at the jack point. rust free doesn't exist with any driven NA miata, period.
yeah rust free doesn't mean a fucking thing I have come to find out. go look at the undercarriage of any of these supposed "rust free" cars. It's all gone to shit

Craigslist is your best bet honestly. It sucks to hunt through but if you want an NA for a decent price, that's where you're going to find it. Sifting for the one gold nugget in a mountain of shit. I live in Orlando and I know for a fact that if you drive down to Central Florida, you'll be able to find a clean NA. They're all over, you just have to actually look, and not just five miles around your zip code

Well now I know your lying. We bought an M edition for $1800 two weeks ago, one miata sold in jacksonville for $800 last week that needed a transmission and there is one in Orlando right now that needs a motor for $900.

What your looking for is a perfect example for a cheap price. Which wont happen anymore with the way the market is. People have memed and hyped these cars up and demanding high cost, then other morons support this buy just paying what they want. So you either got to find one that needs work and do it. Whether a motor trans or body work. Or just pay primo for a car that is already great.

Troll around white people neighborhoods

Lots of people in their mid 40s early 50s have no clue how to use craigslist so it'll probably be outside

Since you are probably the first person to ask in a while you can probably get away with paying less than $2k

Alternatively check actual dealerships for miatas people have traded in

Dealers don't like to have 20+ year old cars on their lot so you can get cheap

If you're looking older than 05 it will be standard

Watch for rust

If it shifts weird it's probably just the clutch plate or the master slave cylinder (Easy fix, but time consuming)

More displacement will spool a turbo faster. The 1.8 is objectively superior for everything, but the 1.6 sounds better and is more fun to tool around in because you have to rev the piss out of it to get anywhere. Also, NA6s had the best dash.

Federal 595 RS-R 205/45R16. Should cost you around $350-400 mounted and balanced. Stick with your stock wheels until you're ready to spend $1000+ on 225s or 245s on 15x9 or 10s.

That's the only NA/NB Miata for sale near me with both the sport suspension and LSD. Don't care for the NB2 styling. There is a black NB1 sport but I don't want a black car with a black interior in Texas.

It's gonna be a daily for a few months while my other car's getting a hot motor built for it, then it'll probably either sit in storage except for weekends or special occasions, or I might sell it and recoup most of the cost since 10th anniversaries seem to be worth quite a bit regardless of mileage.

>>16723049
You can buy the suspension for about $300 and the LSD for around $300-500. You lose VVT, Sport brakes, a slightly stronger 6 speed, and a few other smaller things in favor of a car thats only advantage is low mileage and collectibility, which you'll lose if you actually drive it.

The NB1 Sport is basically the same car as the 10AE. It doesn't actually matter if it gets hotter than shit inside when you can just drop the top for 5 seconds to let all the scorching air out and then put it back up to turn in the AC.
>>
>>16723082
Looks like someone crunched it backing up and turning. With that little damage I'm surprised the dealership didn't just replace the panel and pretend it never happened. It's certainly not enough damage to justify a police report or branded title, so there shouldn't be any documentation of the damage.

Just put Dunlop Direzza DZ102s on my Miata in 195/50/15. The car is so much more lively now. They're like 68 a pop or something and you get 50 bucks back on the rebate off of tire rack. Pic related. I completely recommend them.
>>
Anyone have a detailed write-up on doing a 1.8 swap on a NA6 without the flyin miata kit that would 100% work?
>>
>>16722465
Also 15 inch wheels or bust. You don't necessarily need 15x9 or 15x10 unless you're doing track days, or you're running a lot more than the stock amount of power. The car won't be as responsive on the street with such wide tires, and that's where you'll be driving it the most.
>>
>>16723324
The only part of the kit that's necessary and can't be made to work with jbweld is the throttle body adapter, which is only necessary if you want to keep your 1.6 intake and airbox. Get a silicone U-bend, hook it up to the 1.8 throttle body on one side and the 1.6 MAF on the other, and stick an eBay cone filter on the end and you've taken care of that problem. You'll need to extend wires for a couple of sensors, but even a monkey could figure out how to make that work.
>>
>>16723347
The only advantage of 15" wheels is that they have more options for wide tires. If you're not taking advantage of that, there's no need to waste money on wheels when you've already got perfectly functional ones.
>>
>>16723387
good shit thanks i was just wondering if their was more too it
>>
>>16723418
Not really. Coolant plumbing is slightly different and some sensors got relocated, but the two engines are very similar. Same motor mounts, same bellhousing, etc. Bore spacing is different which is why you can't use 1.6 manifolds on a 1.8 (I think the 1.8 exhaust manifold will bolt to the 1.6 downpipe, but I'm not 100% on that, you might want to check), that's pretty much the biggest change.
>>
>>16723397
the thing is, 15" wheels have more used tire options in general, far more, and i rather like used tires ever since i got a lightly used set of pilot super sports for my bmw wagon for $250 on it, and the lowest tread on any of them was 90%

She has a Honda Element so I have access to some cargo. Should I pull the trigger on this? I think I fell in love with the ND. However, I live in Chicongo so I don't know how practical this will be as my only car.

You just said you have access to cargo. If you need cargo room just trade cars for the day or rent a U-Haul trucc if the element isn't big enough.

Miatas on snow tires handle great too, so you shouldn't worry about winter either.

>>16726416
Depends on your goal for the car, personally I prize reliability over all.

If you just want a functional car, disregarding looks, it might be a good setup. Although I would be a bit nervous buying a car as a reliable functional car that I couldn't test drive (no brakes). It's also gonna be a project no matter what, so pick your poison I suppose.

If you have another car to drive and just want a functional car, go for it.

EHP = Extreme High Performance = current generation fast tires

Every so often, tire development gets to a point where there's a distinct difference between the current gen tires and the previous, so they invent a new name to describe the newer, faster tires. Which is why we have this strange situation where an "extreme high performance" tire is typically faster than a "maximum performance" tire.

They still make tires under the older designations that perform similarly to other tires in the same designation, so a Dunlop DZ102 or BFG SC2 (both Ultra High Performance summer tires) is equivalent to the top tier of street tires from 10 or so years ago, but much slower than the Z2*S or Rival S (those manufacturers' current EHP offerings).

tl;dr:
RE-71R, Rival S, Z2 Star Spec, RS-4, etc are fast
RE-40, Sport Comp 2, DZ102, S.Drive are not

Also, fast tires heat cycle out long before they wear bald so you don't want to buy them used.
>>
>>16729031
Literally grab a piece of metal and nigger rig it on there
>>
>>16729165
so, are those designated by extreme performance summer tires on tire rack, rather than ultra high performance summer tires?

i thought extreme performance summers traded wet traction for better dry traction with UHPS were great for both?

>yoko s drives
Had these on my 80s fwd turbo funcar, they don't last long but they were pretty grippy. I always blamed it on me sliding around corners whenever possible for a year.
>>
>>16729238
UHP tires are slower, which can mean that they compromises for longer life (harder compound), better performance in standing water (deeper tread, narrower blocks, etc), more comfort (softer sidewalls), operation in cooler temperatures, cheaper production costs, and all sorts of other things.

Keep in mind that not everything is dialled back evenly, so you can have a UHP tire that's awful in standing water or very short lived. Also, most times "wet roads" don't mean standing water unless you're in a place with particularly awful infrastructure. Most EHP tires will perform better than slower tires on wet pavement unless there's large puddles more than half an inch or so deep. Damp pavement isn't an issue, neither is rain, nor are potholes because they're typically too small for hydroplaning to matter.

>>16729491
Fast tires use soft rubber compounds that mold themselves to the shape of the road to lock in and give you lots of mechanical grip. Once you heat them up and cool them off several times they get hard and basically turn into all seasons. How many cycles you can put on them depends on the tire. Hoosier S75s will get you maybe half a dozen heat cycles, while RS3s are generally still soft when you reach the cords. Keep in mind that some tires, like RS3s, won't get hot enough on the street to heat cycle, but that also means they won't give you optional performance. Tires that require very little heat, like Z2*S or 595 RS-R, will harden after less than a year (which is why it's nice that the Federals are so cheap).

And remember that summer tires hate freezing, and getting stored in the snow overnight will ruin just about any summer tire including the UHP/MP/HP/etc class tires.

Neither will particularly give a shit. Only thing that blows up diffs is wheel hop, and that will explode a Torsen even faster than a spool. Those cars eat rear tires, but that's probably not an issue for the 16 year old owners who get free takeoffs from their buddy that works at a local tire shop.

>>
>>16735267
AD08R was actually what I was referring to. There's been a lot of development in the past 5 years, and now Yokohama is near the bottom in performance but still priced $20+/corner more than anything else.

BFG Rival is better in every single way, including wet and dry grip, longevity, and price. I'd recommend those or Maxxis VR-1 for a daily driver.
>>
>>16735347
what about toyos?

>tfw no slow shitbox on R888R's
>>
>>16735347
Is the Yokohama S-Drive still the best for a 205/50R15 in terms of performance vs treadwear?
>>
>>16735370
R888s (and R888R) are R-compound tires, they're not intended for street use. I was never a fan of them, NT-01s last longer and are just as grippy. And now the RC-1 is practically the same as the NT-01 but is cheaper.

R1R is Toyo's street tire. It's another older design that I wouldn't recommend. It's not insanely expensive like the AD08R, but I'd sooner take a set of 595 RS-Rs and save $100+ on a set of tires.

>>16735391
I'm not convinced they ever were. I recommend them to people that demand a single tire year round in cooler climates where freezing temperatures are still relatively uncommon, but I don't actually like how they drive. It's just an easy recommendation because they work fine and I still haven't found a car that doesn't have them available in roughly similar size to stock (+/- 20mm width or 1/4" OD). If you live somewhere warm get Rivals or VR-1s.

If you live in Death Valley, just say fuck it and DD Toyo RRs. If you live in the Midwest or New England, there's no excuse for not having two sets of wheels and tires.
>>
>>16735582
I live in SE Texas near Houston so summer temperatures rival the surface of the sun.

I was assuming that the S-Drives would be the best option based on flyingmiata recommending them as the best overall tire for a DD.
>>
>>16735618
Get Rivals or RS-3/RS-4s. And take any opinions from FM with a grain of salt. Their primary consumer base is boomers on miata.net. Keith has some good technical data from time to time, but everything that involves a qualitative judgement from them is suspect.
>>
>>16735657
Also, I guess I should point out that that's the normal "Rival", not the autocross special "Rival S". The S is gripper but doesn't last nearly as long and can't handle heat as well.

Second alternator belt to snap on me in five months. First was the one that came with the vehicle when I bought it, the second one was a Dayco belt I put on last October—broke yesterday shifting into second after three months being in storage.

Should I be looking at a bad pulley, or is it plausible it was too cold and I had the thing on too tight?
>>
>>16736056
You sure you didn't accidentally use the AC+PS belt on your alternator+water pump? They're about the same length but slightly different width, so it's not immediately obvious you fucked up, but if you get them backwards the AC belt will jump off and the alternator belt will shred itself.
>>
>>16736093

Nah. Went to Autozone, asked for '95 Miata drive belts, confirmed the part numbers, jotted down which was which. The power steering belt has stayed on no problem.

If I'm wrong and I did swap the belts, would it have worked for a month and a half? And why would the belt snap immediately after taking it out of storage?
>>
>>16736163
I drove 1200 miles on swapped belts before the WP belt shredded. PS belt jumped off 3 times in that same 1200 miles. Other likely option is a battery or alternator problem is causing your alternator to run constantly at max load. Right after it came out of storage, your battery was probably fairly drained, so the alternator was working hard to charge it. That heats up the belt, which starts to get greasy and slip, which causes even more friction, which causes more heat, and things keep going like that until the belt gives out.
