I already bought used for my beginner bike, I want to buy new and I'd buy a 2017 CB650 if I could but I don't want to wait another 8 months.

The dealership wants $6300 for a 2016 CB500F but only $4700 for a 2015. The price is just too tempting desu lad

>>16638197
the original bikes with semi auto clutches were the honda cubs, they were designed to be operated with one hand so that the other hand could hold the noodles being delivered. There's an episode explaining this on james may's cars of the people. This is why a lot of service bikes like the CT110 which we use to deliver post in australia have semi-auto clutches too.

The other bikes that mainly have semi auto clutches are designed for children because clutches are complex for 3 year olds.

I'm saying fuck the service price as in ignore the service price, because the 2nd hand outright price for an 1199 panigale is not justifiable for it's performance, which is about on the level (or below) of a gsx-r1000 or a cbr1000rr they've barely updated since 08/09 and can be had for peanuts in comparison.

They're also fussy to ride so they're not easy to ride fast.

Question, im buying an oil injected two stroke bike, but have only ridden bikes that take premix. Obviously with a premix bike you cant engine break for any extended amount of time without throwing some blips in to keep it all lubricated. Wondering if this is also true on an oil injected bike? Id imagine the injection system would continue to pump in oil with the throttle closed, or else those little two stroke scooters would eat top ends thanks to mechanically illiterate riders. But on the other hand I can see this being a recipe for fouled plugs. Anyone know?

Not that guy, I was the one that posted the pic. Seems like everyone on /o/ can buy any used bike for $2000 and all bikes will resell for $3k or more.

According to the pricing guides, and nationwide auction sites, prices go from non running parts bike at $1200 to pristine showroom condition at $6k. If you bought this same bike with 10k miles on it a few years ago for $1500 then congratz, but that doesn't seem like a normal price. Let me guess, you sold it for $3000?

Also, I'm in southern California where everything costs an arm and a dick, and at least 10-20% higher than flyover country.

The picture that you posted shows:
missing right side panel
broken right front signal
Some kind of knock off rear signals (if they're led have they been ballasted properly?)
I don't think the rear fender is correct
The bars are aftermarket. Were the originals bent in the wreck that broke the turn signal off?
Tank appears to have a small dent right up at the front bottom near the head

The current owner was going for a scrambler look for the tires, they're brand new so I'm not really complaining.

Side cover was removed by him because it was cracked, but no signs of the bike being dropped; just cracked plastic.

Turn signals were "upgrade" with smaller ones because he didn't like the original look of the bigger ones, but still has them and will include them in the sale.

I think the front motor mount was welded before painting; its not missing bolts really.

Road boots you want good front and back flexibility but not side to side or twisting flexibililty. That's why most good road boots with high safety you see have a plastic hinge of some sort, it allows for no twisting or lateral movement while allowing you to still move the ankle forwards and backwards to modulate things.

This doesn't have to be racey looking either, daytona do boots with the hinge on an inner boot and they just look like old touring boots from the outside but with 10/10 protection.

This is the same technique alpinestars use the in the Sueprtech Rs (albeit the supertech R's definitely vent better and look racier).

Dirtbike boots need to be read for war, to deflect sticks and rocks and kick shit and what not, road bike boots don't.

It is, really. The left front mount is welded to the frame. If you can't get the right front mount off, you can't get the motor in/out. Those two bolts marked "5" in the picture? You need those. This engine is being held in my the left mount only, because whomever put the motor in was high.
>>

Yeah, it's pretty conservative. It's a lot more power than the 650 twins, but still down compared to the fz6 and whatnot. Not sure who they were catering too.

That being said, I'm sure years down the road that bike will be sought after just because of rarity.

Looking closer, the mount bolts are missing because the mount holes don't line up with the holes in the frame, because the frame is bent.
>>
>>16639070
I, >>16638957, didn't even notice the missing bolts.

And now that I look some more, the dent on the tank looks like where the turn signal would have smashed into it, so now I wonder what condition the steering head is in? Did it go full lock in a wreck and bend the stop tabs on the triple tree?

CB's are nice bikes anon, We're just giving you ammo to get the price down if you want it, or just to warn you away from a lot of potential problems.

it is designed for riders smart enough to know they're average at riding and just want something comfortable, reliable, affordable and reasonably well handling with a buttery smooth throttle and gobs of midrange.

The FZ6 only makes more power than the cbr650f over 9,500 RPM and it makes it in surges and waves compared to the ruler like straight line of the cbr650f.
>>
>>16639101
I hear ya man. The guy let me ride it around the block, its my first bike and it didn't feel weird or anything. I didn't look close at the tank so I can't say if thats a dent or just a photo reflection.

Steering felt smooth and non-binding. Throttle spring felt heavy, and the pipes had a few minor dings (like shopping cart into a door ding). Pipes were original with minor surface rust near the exhaust ports at the very back. Its a 40 year old bike, nothing alarming really.

He had it listed on craigslist for $3400, so I just kinda tossed out a $3k number and he agreed. Said he would hand over the title and box of parts.
>>
>>16639165
Interesting. I've heard that fz6 were peaky though. I sat on an fz1 at a dealership recently, I think it was an 08. That bike just felt great, perfect ergos for me.

Too bad Honda doesn't sell the naked cb650 here for reason. Is a cool bike, if not the best performer
>>
>>16639174
I would walk away honestly. If the frame is bent like the other anon pointed out and the head is buggered like I suggested, you might wind up with junk or at least another multi $k bill to fix it. For all that cash you're practically halfway to a brand new CB1100
>>
>>16639225
Can you explain how the frame is bent or how the head is buggered? Like I said, I rode it around the block up to about 40mph, and it felt fine. What kind of problems would this produce?

Intuitively I understand its bad, but how could I have missed something as bad as that on a test ride?

What up fuckers. Buying a CBR1000RR on Sunday if the weather permits (fucking north east blizzard)

We scheduled two weeks ago for this Sunday before the snow hit the fan.

Anyway shit is completely done up, mint condition, 1 owner, blah blah you don't care.

Only thing I'm curious about is any of you own 06-07 CBR1000RR's? How do you like it?

The one I'm looking at is an 07.
>>
>>16639239
You said this was your first bike. How would you know any different? BTW, the heavy throttle is probably because the cables aren't routed properly or they are kinked. The head problem might not show up until you get up above highway speed, but then it will really bite your ass.

basically anything that's not covered in more intricately painted and decal covered fairings than you would care to even begin to remove is something you shouldn't buy used, because lazy fucks and incompetents won't be able to half assedly repair or hide damage as easily as they can with easily "cafe"-d standards and cruisers, without making it really obvious that they did something (so it's a "streetfighter")

It's an 16 hour job to take apart the bike to get to the valves, $100 an hour = $1600 and that's not including the price if the valves needs to be adjusted.
>>
>>16639659
Dont jam your front brakes on with the bars turned. Seen a lot of new guys drop their bikes in a parking lot because of it.
>>
>>16639659
The motorcycle safety class instructor advised to the whole class just go to an empty parking lot and practice the basics like starting, stopping, low speed maneuvering, and everything else.
>>
>>16639688
probably 3rd world prices
>>
>>16639659
Also, tip: practice in a parking lot riding the clutch and making tight, slow turns. Maneuvering slowly is the best thing to learn the basics
Become comfortable with starting on hills early so you don't embarrass yourself or piss off cagers
>>
>>16639659
idk you kind of just feel it. there's a point where you change how you lean and steer but it should be easy to figure out because if you don't adjust properly you'll fall over.

look where you want to go
use the rear brake more than the clutch unless you're really good with the clutch, because if you clutch too mutch you'll fall over
don't fall over it sucks, you'll probably break all your levers and a footpeg

I don't feel like writing it all again but I can't find the 4 post long tutorial I gave a while back so here goes.

#1 is to practice a fast idle, right now you don't need to be thinking about throttle modulation, just keep it steady, hold it at 4, maybe 5,000 RPMS on the dash, because what you need to learn right now is the clutch.

Seek out your friction point, so with your rear brake on, release the clutch until you hear the
revs start to dip a bit, that's the point where the clutch starts connecting and sending power to the rear wheel, now hold it there and release the rear brake, congrats, you're moving forwards.

Where noobs tend to stall is from a lack of consistency on either control, locking the throttle into a fast idle eliminates one thing to think about and our fast idle is gonna be useful later.

Now we come to low speed maneuvers with clutch slipping, here we use our fast idle, slipping clutch and rear brake control to keep nice and electric smooth power on tap whenever we like. Use that same fast idle, clutch slip and rear brake but instead of releasing the clutch and rear brake fully, keep them on and try and ride as SLOW as you possibly can in a straight line, work on keeping the throttle and RPMS absolutely steady as you do this, once you've practiced this for a while you can start doing donuts, and this is the really important bit because this is the bit where I'll make it so you NEVER DROP A BIKE IN YOUR LIFE.

look all the way to the left or the right with your head and begin doing donuts with your fast idle, clutch slip and rear brake. Work on just getting them as tight and as close to full lock on the handlebars as you can (this will be very scary).

If you feel the bike begin to "drop",your first instinct will be to either steer out of the donut or put your foot down, but there's another way, if the bikes lean angle increases you can simply release a little bit of clutch or rear brake to send a little more power to the (cont)

rear wheel, this will pick the bike up, Pretend you have your feet glued to the footpegs and can't put a foot down, if you practice these donuts and picking the bike up using the throttle once a night in a carpark, with in a week (2 at most) you will have completely gotten rid of your desire to put a foot down and will have replaced the instinct with releasing a little throttle. It will now be impossible to "drop" a bike.

From here you can go on to practice u-turns or cone weaves or other low speed activities.

>>16639808
>>16639817
I do not recommend this at all, if you're going at any speed low enough the bike could be idling with no power on it you should have your clutch slipping and a fast idle so you have some instantaneous power on tap to "save" it like I've been describing.

Also the transition between idling with the throttle butterflies totally closed and the first crack of the throttle can be jarring which is the exact opposite of what we like at low speed, do not learn this way, low speed activities with no clutch is a way more advanced technique because it's 1/4 as smooth.
>>
>>16639856
>>16639659
Seconded, don't learn without throttle. I was just saying the bike can do it

Recommendations for newer rider? I had a dirt bike when younger, a Yamaha that was 120~ish cc. Also had a moped, don't know power or similar.

It's been a few years since I rode however, almost 10.

Talked to a couple guys I know, they recommended Honda Rebel (I'm thinking in the lower range, like 300cc or less), Suzuki 400 (I see a lot of suzuki's in general on CL, could use clarification), or "any older jap bike" (how older? specific models?).

So what would y'all recommend for me? I'm over 6' tall and I'd prefer cheaper used over new. It would mostly be for commuting and I wouldn't bring a lot of stuff with me. I really want to nail down a list of about 5 different bikes that are great for beginners. Any extra info, like common issues to look out for when buying used or similar, would be awesome.

>inb4 read the sticky
90% of it is "don't ride a super powerful bike as a beginner, we're serious". Especially when considering the age, it's almost completely irrelevant.

I can't seem to lean enough to use all the tyre, I get scared, especially on right corners.
>>
>>16640316
We being like for serial?
it could be down to a number of things,
1- you don't go fast enough to need to use all of your tyre
2- your tyre is squared off and limiting how far your bike physically can lean over
3- the design of the bike does not allow you to lean further
4- you are running the incorrect tyre pressures
5- your tyres are shit and they slip easily when leaning more than you normally do reducing confidence
6- your body position is wrong (likely crossed up) making leaning into corners feel un natural.

or we maymaying?
Just git gud fagget.
>>
>>16640324
oh suspension set up is another, incorrect suspension set up will fuck with your lean angles a huge amount.m

My mechanic put them on in november. The rear one seems a bit strange.
>6- your body position is wrong (likely crossed up) making leaning into corners feel un natural.
Even if I were to counterbalance like on dirt bikes my strips should be smaller, not bigger.
>>16640332
Might be a factor, I'm a 60kg manlet.
>>16640338
I don't want race boots, they're stupid on the road, I don't plan to do any racing.
Sidi are for deformed people, Alpinestars boots might be shittier than Dainese and Gaerne I wouldn't know, never tried a pair.
>>
>>16640353
>My mechanic put them on in november. The rear one seems a bit strange.
You should check your tyre pressure every time you fill up with fuel, you can lose a few psi over 1 long ride.
>>
>>16640364
If anything it looks like it's about to blow up, the edges are more rounded than most tyres I've seen, but maybe it's simply because they're thin 600 tyres.
>>
>>16640393
front should be around 36psi, rear 38psi

I nearly failed my driving test at the driver safety class because of the retarded slalom. minus 1 point for hitting a cone, and minus 2 points for putting your foot out or down. I got minus 6 on the slalom alone. The instructor said I nearly failed, but because I aced everything else he passed me.

Failed the written test at the DMV by 2 questions, but they allow you to take it up to 3 times in the same day. Cute latina working at the DMV said to try skipping some questions that I don't immediately know the answer to. Passed with a 95% the second attempt.

>>16641182
My dad had one. It was a 2004, had 200000km on the clock when he sold it.
After they fixed the twin spark system it was really reliable. It was only sold off because my dad got old and needed more protection and it's a bit small for me (and I just got a new bike).
Heated grips are standard, hand guards aren't but they are nice to have. If it has the official BMW touring panniers it's a good deal, those are very expensive.

The WR for 1 mile is 3:43, 3000m 7:42. You say you can beat that.
>>
>>16641834
I promise you you cannot run 2.5 kilometers in 5-6 minutes. The fastest people there were like Kenyan and they did it in 8-9 minutes.

>>16641848
Nah it's not buzzy, you do have to really rev it over 75 though. It's not really a highway bike, but back roads and city staying below 70-80, it's pretty damn fun. It's also really nice to learn on because of how light it is, I can close to dropping it the first night I went out, but I just put my foot down and picked it back up before it hit the ground.
It's a fun bike, but if you are commuting far on the interstate and it isn't stop and go traffic, or if you plan on taking long road trips often, maybe get a ninja 500/650 or an fz6r or sv 650s

Oh yeah, meant to say, they're not charging me the regular cost of the annual service whenever I hit the relevant milestones, if it's in the next 18 months. I think an annual service is about £200 from what he told me.

That's part of what I want help with. I don't know what the differences are between all of those. All I know is that it needs to be road legal, I won't ever use it off road, and I will use it to commute on highways.

>All I know is that it needs to be road legal, I won't ever use it off road, and I will use it to commute on highways.
This narrows it down somewhat.

Assuming the majority of riding is spent commuting, that would rule out sportbikes as they're fairly uncomfortable.

Naked bikes are much more comfortable and you can still go "fast" on them if you want to hit some twisty roads and have a bit of fun. Ideally you'd want something with a windscreen as well to keep dealing with wind to a minimum. My recommendations here would be an FZ6 or equivalent type bike.

If you want something a bit more aggressive and "fast" oriented, sport touring bikes are also a good idea, such as the Honda VFR series.

A bit more information about what you really want and intend to do with the bike would be helpful. If you rode bikes before and have a bit of experience, a 600 isn't going to kill you so that opens up your options a lot more.
>>
>>16641932
Sport tourer or adventure tourer. Naked maybe.
>>
>>16641932
Get any 650 class bike, since you have decent experience riding already. Fz6r, sv650s, ninja 650, cb650f if you want dat exhaust look but to go slow, CBR 650, or maybe a supersport 600 if you are really confident and safe

>>16641980
Don't listen to him on adv, they're too heavy and "designed for off road" partly. Naked standards or sport tourers like the fj09 might be good tho
>>
>>16642006
>they're too heavy
Too heavy for what?
>>
>>16642006
A V-strom is far better comfortable than a VFR if you're going to commute, retard.

It is nice, but he's newb. I wouldn't want to see one crashed

He should just get a naked standard or a faired 650 or a beginner bike if he doesn't actually care about the highway part. The end :)

Then it's better for what he will do with it, glad you changed your mind.

Last time I rode a bike was about 10 years ago and it was a dirt bike. Rode a moped for a little bit after that, but I never went above 35 mph on it.

Naked sounds like a good fit right now. Comfy for commuting, which is what I will use it for 90% of the time, and it's still a bike so I can go fast.
>>
>>16642063
I don't know why you're calling me a retard when I said "any 650 class bike"
I agree with you nigger, except fuck Suzuki

>>16642092
Look at sv650(non S), and fz07. Fz is more fun but they're both great bikes

My first street bike was a 600lb 1200cc 130hp sport tourer. Maybe don't assume everyone's as shit a rider as you.

Oh and p.s. that bike was a great commuter

SL750 (not really t'ho)
SV650
ER-6
Cb500
Mt-07
NTV650

Basically not-supersports

Alright, so
SV650
Fz07
ER-6
Cb500
Mt-07
NTV650
Honda Rebel (300 or 500)
Suzuki 400
SL750 (though that's a lukewarm suggestion)

>>16642127
I don't know a lot about engine size for them. All I know is that my experience so far was with a 120-ish bike and a moped. I just figured lower power would be less likely to kick my ass at low speeds.
>>
>>16642149
The cb500 isn't a great bike, I hear they're cheaply made and don't feel very solid, but I'm sure that's a person by person thing.
Also, the mt07 and fz07 are the same bike, MT is the Europe version.
I would go test an sv and an fz and choose between those two, they're pretty much the best bikes of the ones you listed, and they're both marketed as beginner bikes so I wouldn't worry about the engine size too much, they both have very linear power curves compared to 600cc SuperSports

He has also said multiple times he doesn't really grasp the engine sizes which makes sense if you don't know much about bikes. I'm not saying he should get a touring bike but he has experience on a bike already so he's less likely to have the teething issues a properly new rider would. He's also tall enough that even most adventure bikes won't be too tall for him to at least tiptoe.

Don't listen to the tripfag, the CB 500 is a good starter bike. If your budget is under 2k, go for that or the ER-5.
Don't fall for the GS 500 meme (and that's me saying it).

That makes sense, nothing against adv personally, I just figured it wasn't what he wanted based on what he was looking at

Keep in mind there's a difference between ER-6n / ER-6f and ER-5.
The 6 has a 650cc engine and is newer while the 5 has 500 and is cheaper.
