Lel I can't defend it. It's a big open field so any cars can be seen for miles. I make mostly complete stops anywhere else.

I gotta extend the IAT sensor wires and I'll be good to go on this intake.

It's done. Reinstalled an IAT sensor and the crank case hose. I'll replace the filter later on with an AEM one. You can see my zip tie engineering on both ends of the pipe. One to hold in the IAT sensor and the other end to secure it to one of the bolt holes the OEM intake attaches to.

I'm down to just one CEL code and that's just for an O2 sensor. I'll get one from my buddy tomorrow.

why don't they put the intake towards the front of the car and the exhaust facing the back of the engine bay? just flip the engine around

They actually did do that starting with the 8th gen I think? Honda engines back then turned the opposite way. My trans is on the passenger side and not the driver side like other cars at the time.

from the manufacturer its was shit but I enjoy the design of the car.
>>
>>16616049
It was a good idea that was poorly executed.

2,650 curbweight with 120-130hp (depending on year) doesn't sound that bad. But they wanted it to be 2 things that were total opposites: a sporty hybrid.

It isn't that fast, and it doesn't get that great of mpg (40 hwy).

If you tune the stock engine with a supercharger, you can get up to 200hp, but then there goes your good-ish mpg. And at that point, why not just do a K20 swap?

Then that brings the question: Why didn't they just offer an SI edition?
>>
>>16616058
The design is the best thing by far. The hybrid is just ass. My friend's CR-Z can barely match my MPG. He has the supercharger though so that probably sacrifices MPG.
>>
>>16616091

Amazon a best. If they ever stop making them you could always just go aftermarket. I had a filter in my stock airbox for over a year straight and it still looks very clean.

10-40W for engines over 75k miles
I use it on my civic and supra
>>

Does that help slow down burn? I may switch to that with my next change. Then again one five quart bottle lasted me the entire 12k miles so I'm not sure.

I think at the time the stock air filter box had the oil weight recommendation. Does no good for a swapped car though. lol

I put a THICC additive in my civic. In my supra it just burns it. It theoretically should since it's thicker.

Dude with the fucked 08 Civic Ex here, some of y'all may remember.

Recap for those who don't: Dad's Civic is fucked, somehow cracked the block, water went low and overheated, blew headgasket, last left off on us getting the head off with block still in car.

He took the head by himself to get decked by some guy who dresses in full military gear (and I mean like about to be deployed/full chest rig and shit) everyday. When I went with him to go get it the dude told me he didn't know how much the shop he took it to cut off but that it was pretty badly warped. Looking at the head though they didn't hit the service limit mark so it's still good.

Ight now we're kinda stumped on what to do because we aren't gonna get the block decked because it's cracked and if we pull it we might as well change the whole damn thing. Either 1) put head back on potentially badly warped block with a new headgasket and hope the shit seals or 2) take cracked block out and just get new motor from a totaled car.

I mean, we were gonna JBWeld the crack and it should hold the water from leaking out but we really don't want to pull the block out. Also we don't have a precision straight edge. Photo is of the head with baked on headgasket that we couldn't remove for shit.

I had created a new thread to post this but I figured this must be a better place to ask. Appreciate all the help.

So I live in huehueland, one of the shittiest places on earth in general but more so when it comes to cars. Two years ago I was forced to sell my car (2005 Mitsubishi Pajero Full with 62k miles) to pay bills and survive, and haven't had a car ever since, which kills me on a daily basis.

Now I'm about to come across a bit of money and I really want to buy a car, albeit it will have to be a cheap one. I was really tempted for a while to blow all my money on a 2005 Audi A4 (which would cost around $10k and leave me completely broke) but I've come to my senses.

Anyway, just looking into some general advice regarding this specific purchase. Despite the shitty color, pic related is the car I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on. It's a 2005 Honda Civic EX with 65k miles.

The actual question/advice I'm looking for here comes from the fact that here in rapeland, especially in my family, people are usually very vocal against buying cars that are over 10 years-old (most people I know won't even go that far) though no one has ever been able to give me a real reason for that.

So, is it worth it getting this Civic (which will cost me about $4,500) or should I look into a shittier but newer car (like a bottom of the barrel 2012-ish Chevrolet Corsa or a VW Gol)?

Because of the relatively poor roads around here (which I'm assuming is the reason people avoid older cars?), is that enough reason to avoid the Civic? Is there anything in particular I could check (by myself or with a mechanic) before I buy it?
>>
>>16622269
>relatively poor roads around here
this may be just me, but less rim and more rubber generally works for bumpy roads
>>
>>16622284
My real question for you people that are knowledgeable is if a 2005 Civic that drove on non-ideal roads its whole life could be potentially fucked up and if I should stay away from it since poor roads are a factor. Or it doesn't matter that much? Is there anything apart from the suspension I should be checking?

Also would like to know if at this year/mileage, should I expect any major/expensive maintenance soon.
>>
>>16622313
Bounce the four corners to see if the suspension isn't shot and all bouncy, take your hands off and see if the alignment pulls, if it checks out, you're good to go.

>>16622594
Automatics on those things are risky. I only recommend buying that if they had trans fluid service history done at intervals of 30k miles and if it shifts smoothly during the test drive.
>>
>>16622605
Oh, fuck, really? It's easy to find a manual (since it's the default in the country) but I was really hoping to go with an auto.

This car in particular has only 65K miles in it, so I should only be looking at a trans fluid service in the middle of its life and another to be done now, right?
>>
>>16622623
Yep that's about right. Keep in mind though, manual Hondas last a long ass time. They have the reputation of having great manual transmissions but shit autos. Toyotas have much better autos in comparison. My 94 Corolla transmission is smooth as butter.

If a car has this much front body work and the owner is mexican. Wat are the chances of it being in a hit n run then trying to hide the damage? Is this just ocd levels rust prevention or replacing dented panels from previous owners or wat?

You can just buy locally if the seller has proof of provenance. Either buy from someone that still has it in the car or just buy a car and yank it yourself.

If I had unlimited money I'd go with HMO but honestly you are going to get similar quality.

Just do a test drive and a compression test before you buy and you'll avoid 90% of issues. (and save a ton)

Also you won't need to pay shipping.

You won't need to swap clusters, but you may want to if yours doesn't have a tach. Depending on how handy you are you can keep the mileage the same when you swap. (again idk your ability level)

If your technical abilities are holding you back from purchasing locally, maybe it's time to bring a friend and learn a little. (No bully)

You'd be surprised. The front ends on EGs are very fragile so it being replaced isn't uncommon. The front end of my EG isn't original either and it's got no damage underneath.
>>
>>16627115

No car walks away from a collision that damages a part to beyond repair without small issues in panel alignment etc. Also, a minor crash wouldn't damage both fenders, the hood, and a bumper. I've seen less damage from a deer strike.

For the 1300 the seller is asking you can get another hatch that hasn't been crashed.
>>
>>16627155
>hit a crossover or truck in your civic
Yes the hood and fenders will get wrecked, the car will still drive fine.
>>
>>16627174
Is it possible? Sure. Should anon take a gamble on random craigslist that everything is fine? Probably not. Let's be reasonable instead of arguing about what's possible
>>
>>16627190
I wouldn't consider $1300 a gamble and I'm poor, now a used car that i'm getting a loan for, you're damn the the bitch is gonna be immaculate with a clean title and no bodywork.
>>
>>16627190
I'd personally request a lot of pictures before buying it. It looks better than my EG and I paid 1300 for it too. That's a very low price for my area. Mine still needs rear quarter work and that one has it done already.
>>
Ok im going to check it out then probably walk away. At least take it in to a shop before i buy if it looks decent to me. Wat is going to be causing problems? I plan on redoing the suspension, struts, wheel bearings, brake n fuel lines, brakes etc anyways. I have no clue how to check for frame damage besides obvious defects i can see.
>>
>>16627235
These are very basic cars so frame damage will stick out pretty good. Just check where the fenders bolt to the car and it will tell you a lot. Same goes for the radiator support where the bumper attaches.

here's an EJ6 near me for 1900 bucks

https://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/5984940226.html

127k miles and is in good shape. It's auto but you can literally get a d series tranny for under 200 if it really bothers you. (Or b swap it)

Here's a 95 hatch for same price. Manual, vtec, but hatch was replaced

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/5992829700.html

Here's an EJ1 coupe that is literally perfect for 2100

This was literally 5 minutes of craigslist. Don't try to rescue something that is fucked up when you can do better.

I know there's car guys over there, but it is over the top here, stanced s2k's showing off their steel cords, 7th gen soap bar accord with rims and fart cannons, i saw an original EK hatch at CVS, but it was a DX auto, so of course the Honda bois won't touch it, and I do get hope when I see a clean EM1 Civic EX, but it's got a value of $4995 just because unmolested tax.

king motorsports which is arguably the number 1 honda tuning shop and also the only officially licensed mugen distributor in the US is in wisconsin (literally 45 minutes from my house). Not to mention dyno day which they host every year. They flew a guy out from mugen to do the type rr reveal

car culture is everywhere. we also have a lot of rust issues. it's a pretty level playing field, really.

Nice im going to fix up all the nonengine stuff besides doing the timing n wp n fluids. Then either replace the engine or do a swap depending on money and how bad me and the wife need the car back n running. Swaps be adding up with all the extra shit like ecu but i want to do one before i die in one
>>

Don't you think it would be reasonable to start with a car that is in pretty good shape before you invest all of that money and time into it?
>>

Lol for swapping i doubt i will do more than play with it in my mind with this car. Mostly just excited to find sumthing in my area. But fixing it up and replacing the engine later down the road is definitely worth it.
>>
>>16627446
You can actually save money buy pointing shit out to a seller like leaking gaskets, damage, knock a few shekels off the price, if the titles stamped salvage, it's really not worth much and you can get a running vehicle for very little.
>>
>>16627472
I got a pic of the title but who knows this guy could wrecked n tried to fix it up himself. All the airbags n shit could of been ripped out and he just popped the covers back over.

The point is that if he's going to spend $2000+ on parts that he should maybe consider buying a nicer shell.

Saving 30 dollars based on a paint chip isn't going to offset buying a nicer car

I can give you an itemized list of how much he should expect to spend and you can argue with me about putting thousands of dollars into a $1000 car if you want to though
>>

Very pretty Accord anon. Those accents are too spook to trust.

Classic cars can be invisible to normies in the day, but become beacons even at night to car people. The older guy in a 90's Chevy Suburban, who asked if it was for sale, recognized it when it was dark as shit outside. To be fair those tail lights and small silhouette are somewhat distinct.

Can u make the list? U have a point. Ive been spending about $150 a month on the accord and i just got fuel pump n filter and rear susp to go. The list of things replaced is kinda long but it hasnt been that costly. Costliest one thing so far is new tires. I probably slowly put a 1000 into it besides tires. Alot of engine stuff was already done weeks before, plugs, wires, battery, distrubutor, starter, alternator. I just want to see wat u would add
>>
>>16627558

B16 + y21 tranny from a em1 civic: $1200-1400 on craigs
p28 ecu : $50 on craigs
socketing kit for ecu: ~$20
eeprom flasher: $80 (or take your chances with ebay seller)
Since you're already OBD1 you won't need to fuck around with the harness except you'll need to add a vtec wire if it isn't already a car with vtec
intermediate shaft: ~$75
T bracket: ~$75 bucks
engine mounts: $100+ (depends on how much you trust ebay)
axles: $150+ (depends on how much you trust ebay, or use junkyard and save)
wheel bearings: ~$50 +
I'm just going to assume the motor comes with intake and an exhaust header, and let's just assume you magically dont need any exhaust work because it all lines up fine

That puts you at 1800-2000+ which pretty much agrees with what my guesstimate was. This of course doesn't allow for incidentals or replacing anything else. This is just if you want to swap and don't have any parts on hand. (and don't know anybody)

I'd also recommend you put a new timing belt on it while you're at it, and do the water/oil pumps

I'm sure there's something I forgot too. But that gives you the idea.

If you go d series it's going to run you say 4-800 depending on what you do + incidentals.

If you turbo it you can get a kit with the equivalent of a gt2860r off of ebay with all the charge piping etc for like idk, 1200 ish. Fun for a while but expect to blow shit up if you crank the boost.

A lot of people on this board talk about a lot of stuff but not many have any real experience

B20, B18, or D16? Looking to boost. Cost is a factor. Car is a 95 dx manual
>>
>>16627688

B20 isn't great for boost due to thinner cylinder walls. b18b1 is like 300 bucks (you dont need vtec if you are going turbo). D series are same or cheaper.

I'd go b18b1 personally because extra torque

Pretty sure the hatch will just get fixed up n maybe replace the engine wen it dies if the car lasts and isnt a series of problems.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'd like nothing better than to hear it run myself, but I've already trolled CL and my local JYs and not found a high comp B20(Z). Going to have to source it from "abroad" of Podunksville by necessity. I'm not afraid of spending a little since I'm going all out for a lot of new bits already including a new trans. You could call it a resto-mod maybe if it fits your definition.

Just trying to determine if anybody in DFW is reputable since it's geographically close and there are some sellers with low to no shipping costs. Shipping from CA is going to up the cost by (200ish?) a bit. If I can avoid with little risk then I will.

The auto LS has a tach so I won't lose that. Want to keep my mileage but even if i swapped that shouldnt be too hard. This will be my first engine swap but I'm a /g/entooman by trade and have turned wrenches many times before so I'm not afraid of it. I do have the benefit of a classically-trained "Honda man" /o/tist that's a very close family friend I've already been conversing back and forth with on a few things.

I feel pretty good about it in general, just want to make sure I don't fuck myself right from the get-go and at the same time I'm not spending money on shit I don't have to since the bill is already going to be astronimically high.
>>
>>16627942

Depending on what you are looking for maybe a b20z2 isn't what you need anyway. But theres a ton of wrecked and parted CRV's etc you can look at. I got a b20z2 for literally 150 dollars on craigs last year.

for keeping mileage just swap the 93c36, 93c46, or 93c56 EEPROM from the one if it's a digital odometer, otherwise just swap the assemblies

also idk what you drive but if you get the b20z2 the intake probably wont clear the hood, just fyi

Right on. You're asking the right questions, and the same ones I've been asking of myself.

I've got a (disgustingly AT) 00 Integra LS and I'm bucking the general Honda curve by going for a dirt road high torque DD """rally""" prerunner (GSR trans with LSD) type build with very modest goals above the stock aging B18B. No engine mods for now aside from LS I/H/E, need/want reliability and low end grunt. I have aftermarket B18B components I can swap over and that should fit both the engine and under the hood.

For ECU - plan is a "tuned" OBD1 CRV B20 basemap the engine can live with until I can get it tuned properly.

Money's already saved over and slightly above budget, just trying to make sure I put together a reasonable system within my (admittedly limited) experience and goals to pull off.
>>
>>16628068
whats your budget for the build?
Depending on what you are doing you might want to go for LS vtec or a small snail that spools at low rpm. also depending on how peppy you want it to be you might want to consider getting a CTR tranny instead of a gsr one and adding an lsd
>>
>>16628090
That last part wasn't clear.

I meant it might be a better idea to get a CTR tranny instead of spending the money putting an LSD into a GSR one

I want to keep it about $6k, and that's with an auto-to-manual swap and a fair amount of "holy shit, if I'm taking it apart, I don't ever want to do it again for the next decade" type decisions. So - all new heavy duty steering/suspension parts, motor mounts, sensors, accessories, hoses, transmission, etc. Admittedly a lot of extraneous shit that adds up outside of the normal loljunkyardswap parts and stuff that looks ok and might last another year or two but I just rage at the thought of having it apart and in-hand to tear apart again to replace in a year's time. That's why I said "resto-mod".

Considered a T25 snail or LS-VTEC but considering my experience level and (lack of) access to tuning shops, I'm adding complications (in a clockwork sense) I'm just not ready to deal with. If this goes well, maybe my B18B after having been rebuilt will get one of those and end up in a CRX or Civic or Del Sol I don't DD. But right now I'm in babby'sfirst-mode.

Thats why I opted for a straight HC B20B JDM swap. I don't know how impressive or disappointing via butt-dyno a boost in low-RPM tq with mods that support that mid-to-low range and a close ratio trans will be.

99 out of 100 threads you read are about swapping/shifting the power band up to the moon and that's just now what I'm after. A fair amount of plans I've made have been to read the general Honda zeitgeist and then mitigate/do the opposite.

t.b.h. 6k is stretching it and honestly would be a lot less if I wasn't going fully reman'd trans with LSD. That's almost half the budget. Also, to be fair you're not comparing apples to apples if you're talking about an unknown quantity used K24 MT that with my luck grinds in 7 out of 6 gears.

Initially this was what I was looking at doing. But when you start adding supporting replacement parts on, engine management, harness swaps, etc that price goes up considerably too. And even more cost if you're buying ready-made swapshit or things outside my skill level to do if you're talking about DIYing electricalshit. B20 swaps are well documented and several companies make shit to facilitate it easily.

You're right on the mark that a K24 swap would be absolutely fucking boss for what I'm trying to do, I'm just not that smart or not rich enough. Wish I was at least one if not both.

I'm not saying this to be dismissive, I'm just fleshing out my reasoning.

Glass headlights are the best. Wish they weren't taken away by stupid regulations.

>>16628492
Yeah EF is great.

Here's a question. Black carpet, or Type R red carpet?

option 1 you arent even going to notice any benefit from these

option 2 up to you

option 3 up to you

Yeah the BWR stuff is a lot of money all at once for what would be a very minor improvement. May skip the strut bars and get the other stuff. Looking at steering wheels now.

I could also get the lower console instead of the BWR stuff.

Spend some of the money and buy yourself a really nice dinner.

Save the rest for da swap
>>
>>16628631
I'm not really into fancy dinners. Not doing any swap stuff for at least another year since my current engine is so reliable and I'm no racer. Yet.

Got $1724 today, waiting on $208 for state refund, and another couple hundred from my autistic co-worker that owes me money.

I went from looking at car parts to building a PC. Gonna build some dank shit with like a $1300 budget.

Pic related. Sister wants an upgrade so I'm probably gonna build myself a new one and give her mine.

Thinking about a GTX 1070 + i5-7600k build.

Glass headlights are harder to fix but they're cheap and plentiful for EGs. I like them because they stay clear forever.

What's your price range?

I'd recommend anyone looking for a used honda to go for the 3rd gen TL. 6mt of course. Styling held up great, luxurious interior, great reliability, and can make ~290whp with a few boltons. Can find it in good condition anywhere from 4-7k.

It may not be the best looker anymore, but it has all the options, the V6 is peppy, and it's mine. I love my car.
