My cap says 5w-30

I use 10w-40, mazda is retarded and says to use 5w-30 for fuel mileage purposes, it's far too thin to adequately lubricate a rotary engine.

And people wonder why rx-8's lose apex seals.

If you've ever seen the main bearings on an rx8 that used only 5w-30 it looks like someone took an angle grinder to it.

My grandfather remembers when oil was 10w40 but as each decade marched on, the EPA wanted more MPG from the car manufacturers. So the car manufacturers kept on tweaking the oil spec little by little. Otherwise, they would have jumped right to 5W20 at the very beginning instead of grudgingly lowering the oil to 10w30 then 5w30 then 5w20. And now there's been talk about 5w16 which is really pushing the thinness (and engine longevity) for the sake of MPG.

I used to do thin oil in the winter and thick oil in the summer. Worked fine for 100K miles on my 4.6L ford
