What is it mechanically inside the car that makes the ricer sounds?

Low displacement, high compression and a lack of an exhaust usually makes that stereotypical raspy ricey noise. Honda makes the worst ricey-ist sounding engine.

High strung fourbanger with a huge volume muffler for extra deep fart reverb.

A straight piped iron duke sounds way better than even the fanciest Spoon or whatever tuned Honda 4 cylinder with a straight pipe. At least the duke has some rumble to it and doesn't sound like a 1000 kazoos. You can cut the exhaust of a lot of 4 cylinders and they'll sound like a tractor but few will have the shitty raspy noise of a Honda.
