Both of these are sure signs of scammers in my experience. If they prefer calls, it takes you to some weird ass voicemail that asks you to call some other number with an area code that might as well be Nigeria. If they prefer texts, you get a response within 5 seconds asking for your email address to which they send you some bullshit story about their mom dying from a boating accident and asking you to send them 5 amazon gift cards.

I had a 2001 Golf. It was nice to drive, but did come up with weird little issues which were expensive to fix. If you're good with cars, you may be able to do things cheap yourself (stealership wanted $70 for a coolant temp sensor that was bad and sent the idle rpm to 3,500 - I got one on ebay for $7). More involved mechanical problems though generally need a VW or German car specialist, because they're very tight and compact and you need to remove a lot of stuff to get to the guts.
