Hey there auto. I have a question for you.

Firstly my car is an 02 E46.

I've been having "clunking" sounds in it for awhile. Clunk occurs at low speeds, especially when going over bumps. No vibrations from the steering wheel. No problems when turning.

I checked this site: http://estimate.myautomatictransmission.com/cv-joint-symptoms-and-replacement/

Which had the following info: At low speed, a bad CV joint may make a steady knocking sound every couple of seconds or so.

Upon visual inspection of my car, I saw that the outer CV boot was definitely ripped. I put my finger to it and got a fingerful of grayish grease on my hand.

My question for you guys: Will a CV boot like this ripping likely be causing these clunking noises? Said clunking can be replicated by pushing down on the hood with the car parked. Also, do I have to replace the whole CV joint? Or can i just like buy an inner boot, take off the joint, and replace it? Luckily I have a buddy with car knowledge I can do this with if this is possible.

I inspected my control arm (lower) and it looks fine (if not a little old). I suppose this clunking could just be old struts.

Thanks a lot anyone who reads this.

Cv boots click when turning not just steady.
A clunk noise could be a sway bar end link or a ball joint usually. If your going to replace a cv joint its better if you replace the whole axle.

I checked my sway bar. There didn't seem to be an "ply" in it. And i did replace it like 2 years ago so its not that old either.

Haven't heard any clicking.

I'm not talking about the sway bar I'm talking about the end link. If you don't hear clucking it isn't the cv joint.

Also check the strut top bolts make sure those are tight.

Check control arm bushings.

My money is on a balljoint.

Hey guys. Thanks for the feedback

It could be an end link. very true. I did mispeak. I had the endlinks replaced 2 years ago. course they could have fucked up again.

>>16557292
Definitely a possibility. I wouldn't really know how to tell.

I hear the "strut mounts" on e46 can fail. so it could be this. I'm going to probably just ignore this shit if its strut related. I have an 325xi so i cant just buy quick struts like you can with 325is and slap in on. And taking off that coil thing and mount looks like a huge pain and dangerous (you have to like press the coil down and if the pressers fuck up dear god).

my control arms actually seem pretty good. so do the bushings. I had them checked like a year and a half ago by someone who knew what they were talking about and they got okayed. I mean their a little old looking but not to bad.
