Yeah, its a "test" to see that the lights work, and on some of them its a good way of telling that something is wrong - like the alternator-light not coming on

There are tons of those lights tho. Some mean that you might be suffering a catastrophic failure, while another means that your fog lights are on... you're asking too broad a question
