Help me negotiate my buying price for this 2010 Mini in excellent condition similar to pic related. 21,000 miles.
>Me: Are you willing to budge on the price?
>Seller: What's your offer?
>Me: Going off kbb I would say 8000 but it is in great condition so I'm only really willing to spend 9000
>Seller: Sorry that's too low. I still have a loan on it and 9000 wouldn't be enough to pay it off.

Shiggy diggy. The r56 is a shit car and clearly it's had a shitty owner.
You:
>UNLUCKY, ASSWIPE! you buy a new car knowing you're gonna lose out. you can sell it to me for 9, or keep hold of it until you've paid the loan out of your own pocket anyway, when you'll be begging me to take it for 7

Enjoy your timing chain failure.
just buy a beetle
better all around
I can't see how people pay that much for minis where you can buy the early models for like 3-4k
That's why I got my R53
The seller clearly doesn't understand market value. He thinks that because he needs X amount, then the car's worth X amount. The same kind of shit when someone says "I've got X amount of money in this car, so I need to get X amount back". Bitch I don't care how much you put into it, it's worth what it's worth.

Most people don't enjoy losing money.
Sure, it doesn't make sense to rational people, but I at least understand why people are so guarded about their cars, and what they will take for them when selling them.
They know what they got, anon,

Only on turbocharged models. Everything else it's the tensioner.

In the future, look at 2011 and later models. Then ask about oil changes, maintenance, what's been replaced (Thermostat housing is a bitch to get to.). Has it thrown an engine code? What oil do they use in it? Yes this matters in these cars, especially turbos, anything other than BMW LL-04 approved oil and you better get used to fixing it while you fill it up with the engine oil it needs. In fact, flush that shit as soon as you get home.
Save this last question for when you are in person with the owner and can judge their facial expressions and body language. "Why are you getting rid of it?"
And watch their eyes, mouth and stance, if there's any changes to a more defensive posture, or they're about to lie, it's because they are tired of throwing money at it and it's a piece of shit.

That and no one in their right mind will sell a car that they still have a loan on for less than the value of the loan.
This can lead to some sticky situations when the car is valued at like $5k, but the buyer was a retard and took out a $15k loan on it 3 years ago.
Chances are they'll just sit on it until the loan is paid off a bit more, as the loan value is probably more than the value of the car, and will be for a while.
