When they can make an electric car that has
>comparable weight to petrol sports cars (bugatti not included)
>comparable price to average sports cars (doesnt have to run quarter miles as quick as the p100d in the video at this price point obviously)
>not just a one trick straight-line performance pony, good in corners too (low center of gravity should actually help here)
>over 300 miles per charge normally
>over 150 miles per charge when flogging it (my old mustang got ~11 mpg when i lead footed it, so 150 total miles of range is comparable)
>recharge time in the same amount of time that it takes a gas car to refill
>abundant recharging stations
>not sure if im forgetting anything else outside of environmental issues regarding making the batteries and generating electricity
Then they will have made petrol cars obsolete. Maybe they could add a mode that simulates a stick shift to appease people who enjoy having one. They havent made any cars like this yet, so for now electric cars remain econoboxes and instant tork wonders that cant compete anywhere outside of going to the store and a quarter mile drag strip
>>16534029
Same kind of people who try to convince themselves that carburetors are better than EFI. Luddites afraid of change deluding themselves into thinking their way is best no matter what.
Their great grandparents were probably the ones who thought cars were ridiculous 150 years ago and everyone would always ride in horse drawn buggies
>>16534044
Because its a new car company with alot of technical bugs and issues and you shill faggots put up with it and ignore it.
The spotlight is on Tesla because they are new and extremely popoular but its no excuse for this amount of shilling
>>16534049
Short answer?
>Battery Tech isnt far enough along yet but its making strides, weight, range and heating/cooling will improve in time
>Price is just because its a new car on a new platform and its a new country with a premium feel and the pricing reflects that.
If it flops i wont be happy but at the same time i am happy with my 16 year old ICE project

>>16533863
>Why are ICE's so shit???
Lots of power loss between the engine and wheels.
Too many moving parts inside the engine.
Too many moving parts inside the transmission.
No instant torque.
No regenerative brakes.
Too much heat loss.

Electric motors are fantastic from a standing start, everybody knows this. Unfortunately EVs struggle as soon as cornering comes into the equation due to the weight of their batteries.
>>16533942
Electric motors can provide 100% of the torque at any RPM.
whats the point of drag races if you just use a car that you didn't modified at all.
>>16535687

>>16535840
>>16535805
>>16535822
Also, I'm pretty sure an econobox can beat a Top Fuel dragster at a 100 mile dragrace.
>>16535822
Around an autocross I can
>>16535840
I doubt it. It would be at the turn and they could walk it around the turn before you were even off the line.
>>16535668
Actually EVs tend to have their batteries stored under the floor, which is favorable in terms of overall weight distribution.
Surely less weight in the same distribution was even better, but a top heavy light car will corner just as badly if not worse than a heavy car with a low center of gravity.
>>16535845
The second the throttle was closed the engine would cut out or not run half as good as it did a split second before
>>16533863
>>16533975
Electric cars are great at acceleration - so when marketing machine Mr Musk tried to profile his new electric cars as somewhat sporty, of course he emphasised rapid acceleration from a standstill. Doing this early in development, combined with the inherent advantages of the electric motors, means a pigfat Model S or X can do amazing things.
http://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/6902655/259842ed/alfa_romeo_vs_tesla_model_x.html
Anyways, they don't perform well around tracks, since they're heavy, and they still adhere to the laws of physics. They don't do endurance well, because they lack quick resource resupply. They don't do extended acceleration into high speeds well, it's just the short spring to 100MPH they exceed in.
Cherrypicking this and claiming they're superior overall is a falsehood.
>>16534088
>EV's
>Being clean
Yes, because those batteries are being made by Chinese fairies, and the electricity isn't made in a coal plant.
The only way a 90-100% EV car society could work without being significantly polluting would be to go full nuclear - and even that doesn't solve the battery issue.
>>16535845
It would be at the turn, they'd need to reuild the engine, rpeack the chutes, and by that time you're in the next county.
>>16535907
>and the electricity isn't made in a coal plantations
what did he mean by this
>>16535840
But that's the best part. The Tesla isn't even made for drag racing but it still kicks your Lambo's ass.
>>16535916
>what did he mean by this
A coal-burning power plant.
>>16535923
>The Tesla isn't even made for drag racing but it still kicks your Lambo's ass.
Yes it is. Acceleration from a standstill is the single measure of sportyness Musk has chased from day one.
>>16535923
Yeah it was made to be a sports car except it's slow as fuck around corners.
ok so no tesla has ever competed in the standing mile
its because they know they would have a slower time than most all cars even the high performance suvs will have a faster standing mile time
>>16533863
>$140k spaceship

>>16535943
we can do some basic math and find out that even THE WORLDS FASTEST TESLA
can only do the standing mile in 40-42 seconds
which is terrible and thats assuming it didnt stop accelerating at 150mph
>>16535907
I dunno if I'm completely uninformed, but isn't that what the gigafactory is for in Nevada? Making batteries?
>>16535943
>>16535958
Damn, looks like Tesla lost all those customers looking to buy a $150k luxury sedan to run bone stock in the standing mile. How will they sell any cars without that demographic?
>>16535966
Sure, they're making them there - but where do the resources come from? That's a huge environmental burden, several times that of steel and aluminium and other metals that are much more common.
>>16535993
This. Stick with gasoline, which is farmed organically at gas stations, not drilled out of the ground and refined like lithium is.
>>16536013
Consumables for both gasoline and electric vehicles are about the same in terms of pollution - whether it's gasoline burning locally, or coal burning in a centralised plant to provide electricity.
You can't compare that consumable with the resources needed to create a vehicle. There might not even be enough lithium and such to get a significant electric car percentage in the market before the price starts hiking even more than it already does. Our grid isn't made to supply even a 20% electric car society. Hell, we might not even have enough power plants for that.
Also, funny that you mention it, because ethanol-based biofuels exist - although they're a burden on our food supply.
>>16535687
No. They provide 100% power at any rpm.
Tesla is crashing and burning
They cant possible recover now.
Its over EV Cucks. Oil Wins
What is this garbage about tesla's being safe? Fucking bullshit they light on fire if so much as bumb another car, pic related.
>>16533914
Teslas are good for occasional thrills from hard acceleration at stop lights and on-ramps, at public road speeds, but cannot handle continuous hard driving on a track. That is also true of many of /o/'s favorite versions of the Mustang, Camaro, etc. They can only handle a few laps before their brakes fade and their engines need to cool down. But unless you go to a track, most owners will never experience those limitations, so the manufacturers don't care.

>>16543458
Atleast the Leafs interior is better.
>>16533863
Quick to a point. It's ideal for commuting where you aren't supposed to go over the speed limit but the Huracan has the higher top speed and continues to accelerate quicker.
Musk has gone and created the ultimate appliance, though. It'll be quick in stoplight racing, but won't go well over the speed limit thanks to instant torque. And it's spacious.
>>16533942
>Its a family car not a sports car, why does it beat sports cars twice its price?
It beats them in a line. Sort-of. Just don't keep racing or it'll lose. But you're not supposed to be going that fast anyway.
>>16534029
I reckon the big issue with them now is the lack of supporting infrastructure, and that the battery drains quicker depending on how you drive. Is that 300 miles of driving like a lunatic, or sensible "autopilot" that still crashes. Any small town will have a petrol station but how are you going to convince Cletus to let you borrow a power socket to charge your spaceship?
It's ideal for cities, certainly. A pity there aren't charging stations everywhere because it sounds perfect for long trips.

I don't see the issue. The Leaf is supposed to appeal to urbanites who don't really like cars in the first place but don't want to be bus cucks or lycrafags. It's a cheap electric POS because that's all the buyers expect of it. It's also easy as shit to park because it's so small, and the "driving is a chore" crowd probably sucks at parking so this helps.
Tesla is going for younger buyers with the 0-60 time and emphasis on its ability to wipe the owner's bum while taking them to and fro point A to B. It's a big boat with more prestige and the Model S with the fake grille doesn't look half bad. I can't say the same for how the Model 3 and X look, though. The fake grille was a comforting touch and something feels wrong about how they look without it.

>how long can a Tesla produce that power before the battery overheats?
>how long can a Tesla produce that power before the battery is empty?
>how long does it take to recharge that battery?
>what's the top speed of that Tesla?
>how long does the batter last before it has to be replaced?
>what does a new Tesla battery cost?
>do you know how lithium is mined?
>are you aware that your battery is getting charged with coal and nuclear power?
Let me know when you can add 300-500 miles of range in 60 seconds.

>that sweet 17 inch touch screen
That's what I hate the most about the car. I want a fucking car, not a fucking Apple iCar. If you insist on using a touch screen, at least convert the space for the radio/GPS/whatever area for that. I don't need a giant fucking pad right next to me.

>70k starting price
So you don't really understand anything about the world do you?
>>16533863
Let me know when Tesla can post a standing mile time. Fuck off until then.
>>16534039
>This is fucking amazing but the car has ISSUES that you are IGNORING like overheating, steering and other problems
Tesla shills don't care about facts. Their cars are infallible, you see? Hate Tesla and you hate ALL EVs. And I love me some EVs.
>>16543892
Model 3, not S. That had a $35k starting price, no? About the same as an entry level BMW or Audi.
>>16539496
it actually has active cooling, but it's only designed for constant speeds and maybe to do a few launches
constant deceleration and acceleration such as on a racetrack or on twisties is too much for it to handle
>>16534049
when battery technology takes a big leap
it really hasn't changed much in the last few years in terms of chemistry

>>1/4 mile is hailed as one of the most important benchmarks for a car throughout history
maybe on the other side of the pond it is, but over here it's lap times

I wasn't counting the "miles" but I'm pretty sure he did more than one mile. From standing still.

>cannot handle continuous hard driving on a track.
this is inexcusable for a 100k+ luxury sports car
Glad i found out about that and all their issues
>>16541398
EV wont be mainstream until the battery tech is there its really too early to tell.
>>16543947
Not only this but the motors probably overheat as well as the wiring harness/loom isnt built for those sort of loads
it goes way deeper than just the cooling of the battery packs.
>>16539858
Im not the one with a EV car that overheats after 3 minutes on a track
>>16539856
if only.
Tesla has great IDEAS but like the old now long dead car manufactures they dont do it properly.
Sadly the Big 3 will probably make the tech more durable and accessible for performance applications but it will take a long fucking time.
>>16543920
i LOVE ev's i just dont like them for daily driving.
If the Tesla had a decent range and cooling for track work it would be an amazing platform but its too new and not ready for that yet.
They havent really made a sports car since the Roadster which was literally a lotus with their ev tech
>>16544501
>i LOVE ev's i just dont like them for daily driving
Thats the whole goddamn point of EV you mouth breather. Wake up, drive your fully charged EV to work, get off work and drive home, recharge car, repeat.
Daily driving is what EV are for.
>>16533863
Put them both on a lap on the HurrdurrRing. Tesla wouldn't even finish a lap flat out.
Lamborghinis aren't meant for drag racing either, if anything they're designed for two things;
A: Making rich people look rich
B: Going fast around a track
Someone post a Lambo comfortably towing a 5k lb trailer. Inb4
>b-b-but it's not supposed to do that
No excuses, it's a $200k car, even a $20k fleet Tacoma can tow a 5k lb trailer
>>16544625
>towing a 5k lb trailer
Who cares about doing that you hick?
>>16546462
Who cares about driving 300 miles without stopping?
Who cares about driving at full power for long periods of time?
>>16546497
>Who cares about driving 300 miles without stopping?
Not me.
What was your point again?
>>16546523
>Not me
me either, my car can't do that shit and I've got a 25 gallon tank.
>>16546523
>>16546545
So I guess your both ready to ditch your ICEs and get a Tesla.
>>16546566
No, I don't think so.
They're nice and all, but my car still has a much higher top speed, and I love to use it on empty stretches of freeway.
Plus, I can't shift gears in a Tesla.
>>16546566
>Not me
>ready to ditch your ICEs and get a Tesla.
I want a Tesla because I don't care about driving 300 miles?
Is that like getting a Chevy because I want a car with tires?
You make no sense.
