The "easiest" way to prevent someone from starting up your car and driving it away is to install a hidden kill-switch for the ignition/starter motor. You could also remove a main fuse when you park it, but its easier with a well-hidden switch.

The dindu are bold in my local walmart parking lot. The store stopped using the security vehicle with lights to patrol the lot because that only let the dindu know where the security was located. So the store went to plainclothes patrol. Don't know how that works out or not.

It's well known walmarts allow campers and even RV to stay overnight in some corner of the giant parking lot as long as the spots are not in demand by regular customers. In my old truck that I drove down to Central America I wired in an extra relay for the fuel pump, and put it on a push-button switch under the carpet.
All I had to do was click it and the fuel pump would be off.

Switch doesn't need to be heavy duty. The ignition circuit is low voltage. It's the starter that has the high current, and that goes through a relay. I put a tiny magnetic switch behind my gauge cluster and wired it to an led in an inconspicuous location. The car wouldn't turn over unless you put a magnet up to the gauge cluster in the right spot.

Something clever like that is the right way. You avoid opening and slamming the hood twice a day in the wind, rain, ice, or snow. If your hood is iced over, you'll have to crack all the ice to open it and get to the switch in the morning.

Having a big switch under the hood is bad not just because it wears out the hood latch. When you open the hood each time you park at home, the thief might see where you are tinkering. Certainly all the neighbors see if it is an apartment complex. Before long, everyone knows approx where your heavy duty harborfreight switch is located. And you'll probably have to replace the wiring every so often because all that movement causes wire strands to break. And grabbing the dirty switch with one hand and twisting the handle with the other means dirty hands. Just one more thing to take care of before driving off.

We used to pull fuses on our wrecker which was stored at a shop (Bluff Road in Columbia, SC which is a rapidly darkening area) and the Basketball Americans cracked several steering columns over the years but never got the truck. You'd be surprised, a good amount of homeless people break in to garages to try and keep warm given they likely won't steal the car, some even go as far as to cutting a fucking hole in your garage door. They usually break in through a side door though and if you don't use the side door to your garage often you may not notice that it's been tampered with. Homeless people knock out a panel in a garage door. The knowledge how for certain types of doors has been spread around. Garages have lots of stuff to loot and are rarely alarmed except for their doors.

One of the most advanced systems is made under Pandora brand. It features shitload of sensors, gps and gsm module.
Generally speaking it keeps constant connection with Pandora's web server and if connection is broken (signal jammed or alarm system deactivated) the server itself warns you.

I want to chime in. Had a work truck stolen last month. 2004 f-250. Locked, and in a driveway. The door handle was busted, and they got in to latch mechanism from outside.

It was driven about 15 minutes away, to an empty field, where the GPS cut out. It was probably fucked with by a knife or screwdriver.

A week later an industrial place called my company (company and # on the doors) and we found it completely stripped. Dash, radio, and the ~$12,000 in tools and equipment I had on the truck.

The ignition was just cranked on. No busted wires, nothing like that.

I dont even live in a bad area. It fucking sucks.

I say rig up a system to kill power to the fuel pump. And then have a hidden switch that powers that switch. And then a master switch that just kills power from the battery.

And use the Red Club if you live in a fucked up part of town.

They've tried to scout my HOA neighborhood, but we try to make it scary for them. Normally, the dindu would win due to anti-discrimination laws protecting their right to walk up to your front door. Yes, your front yard is your property, but you just try to win a real court case and you will lose due to precedent unless you have multiple signs up. And signage and complete full fencing for every house on the street like that is totally ugly.

If you can't stop the dindu from casing the neighborhood on a driveby, then you end up losing. After the driveby finds places that look good, they'll look at the pictures and video to identify loot like work cars or certain garage doors. They also have people walk through and they will peer over the fence into backyards too.

One dindu car tried to tailgate me and of course the gate didn't shut on them due to legally required safety feature. I went into a driveway and then followed them and ostentatiously took pictures of them. They tried to intimidate me and claim my pictures were illegal and racist. I told them I am formally requring them to tell me where they are going. And read to them the short statement we got from the HOA Board. The statement was approved by police. Once informed, they must tell me. If they refuse, they must leave if I tell them to. They refused of course so I quietly called for police to come to trespass them.

The police came. I showed them the paper I read the statement from and dindu denied everything but seeing the paper was enough proof for the police to believe me. It was my private property after all and they refused to leave. They were cited for trespassing and made to leave.

You really have to avoid paper tiger. They need to be cited. If your neighborhood won't cite them, they will try again. I'm glad (or lucky) they didn't assault me. Tombstone: Here lies anon who foolishly challenged Dindu on his private property

That doesn't stop them. Some thieves will continue to work on a car with people watching them. In 2014, we had three black dudes mugging people at a park and ride transit center while others were nearby watching. Hoodies and something to hide the front of the face. Someone took out a cellphone and got savagely beat down to the ground. They stomped his head and his jaw was broken. They got away and were never caught.

The problem about used cars is that all the prior owners can have duplicate car keys and keyfobs. So if they wanted to part out the car, they can sell it to someone. Then steal it back and part it out. Your purchase would be the extra profit. Stealing it is super easy since they have all the keys.
