What's the point of owning a "sports car" if its under 200bhp?
>inb4 b-but its fun...
Your idea of fun is getting absolutely fucked up by a Maxima?

There will always be a faster car.
The Lotus Elise has less than 200bhp so I guess it's not technically a sports car right?

yes.
Then when the Maxima owner understeers into a tree, I buy his totalled wreck, get me a VQ35DE from it, and into my sports car it goes.

This. Look at classic British sport cars like the MGB, the Austin-Healey 3000, the Triumph TRs, Spitfire and Stag. These cars were never designed to get from A to B as fast as possible because due to "classic British engineering", they'd fall to pieces first, but they designed to get from A to B in a cool, fashionable way.
Your car will break down of course but you will have something beautiful to look at from the kerbside as you wait for the breakdown van.
It was style over substance.
Bench racers are stupid pieces of shit.
OP you are a bench racer.

Handling and spirited driving.
A sports car doesn't have to be fast or have tons of horse power. I don't consider muscle cars "sports cars." A sports car meant to be a get up and go car, which both the AE86 and MR2 are, especially considering how high revving the 4A-GE was for its time.
Those cars are the epitome of what sports cars should be. Absence of driver assist and feather-light throttle response to give you the best driving experience they're capable of with the addition of an engine with a real personality.
By your mentality, a lot of old sports cars aren't sports cars, and that's just flat out wrong. If you're gonna complain about sports cars not being powerful enough, pick modern ones to complain about. The Supra of the same time period, which was Toyota's flagship sports car didn't even make 200 hp (at least the A60.)
