Factory Dana 70 front axle? That must be a heavy duty truck. All 1 ton trucks come with nothing bigger then a Dana 60 front axle...
>>
>>16428835
They come under 70s dodge w300s, some 70s-80s 4x4 tractors and GMC Kodiak top kicks and maybe some international trucks

They're not that great to be honest, closed knuckle, drum brakes, funky steering setup the only advantage they have over the d60 is a higher weight capacity. Though, the ones under the GMC topkicks are the golden unicorn cause they're upen knuckle disk brakes

Still beats a d44 I guess

Sorry, I'm so used to every trail being at least a 90 minute drive from me unless my friend who just bought a farm is home. But that's not real "trail hiking"

Also, the angle of the back tyres make them look real fucking deep. How big of an issue is weight distribution when on 2WD offroading, btw? Or are the back tyres enough to weigh it down enough itself?

Put a spoiler on it to weigh it down.fashion one out of an old Spitfire wing or something. That'll also give you like 200 litres of fuel storage. This way, you'll perform better if your gas tank (spoiler) is full due to the extra back weight.

>bone stock
Ugh these modern "SUV"s and their low clearance. I'm surprised they even let the FJ Cruisers into modern North America with their stock 10 inch clearance or something ridiculous like that.

Xterra is more or less fine. As much as I shit on the Frontier and all other modern Nissans, they put a decent amount of engineering work into their vehicles to make them still offroad capable.

This makes me wonder. As my Ranger is in the shoppe, how far can I go with my AWD BMW X3? inb4 I just have to stick with a modern Ram 1500 for a week.
The owner's manual literally says "Do not drive on unpaved terrain" but like... Yeah. Maybe that answers that question. I can't wait until the lease fucking expires on this thing. Already looking at old Porsche Cayennes.

I really don't like these modern AWDs and out of the 150 Cayennes in my general area, only 3 of them are Manual.

>>
>>16431741
>they put a decent amount of engineering work into their vehicles to make them still offroad capable.
Traction aiding differential, suspension travel, good tires, and a body that doesn't hang too low.

It's pretty simple stuff and there's not much engineering needed. You can build an extremely capable offroad vehicle in your backyard with a welder and plasma cutter. A lot of engineering does very little for actual capability.

Making one that also functions well as a road/track performance vehicle is difficult, as they're essentially opposites. This is where the engineering comes in, but there's far more marketing than engineering. There's sacrifices that a lot of people simply don't understand. A lot of people take reviews implying GREAT daily driver with features to help normies not get stuck if it snows or they take it to the beach as if they mean "absolutely phenomenal 4x4, CAN NOT GET STUCK EVER"
>>

>>16431887
Well then call it a simple vehicle with built in compromise of "luxury". "Luxury" as far as a modern day pick-up can have, of course. So gotta ignore the interior plastic everything.

>>
>>16432520
Generally the luxury/sporty AWD CUV/SUVs are terrible offroad but the good AWD acts like a handicap that can help people that have no idea what they're doing do better than they thought they could. Most stock 4x4s are capable of far more than the average person thinks so if you put a picture in a magazine of one being pushed to it's limits it looks impressive. There's some odd marketing that can go on here. Often vehicles that are ill equipped look more impressive doing these things. But if you watch a well equipped vehicle doing the same thing, it makes it look easy and is no longer impressive. Side by side the ill equipped vehicle can and often does create a better impression just because it makes the same shit look more impressive.

>So gotta ignore the interior plastic everything.
Don't even start to parrot that. All luxury vehicles have plastic everywhere.

>>16432594
Aha! So advertising a vehicle itself to be capable off-road when 99.5% of the clientèle won't take it past a maintained service road is actually contradictory to their actual desires of what they want in a vehicle.

That's sorta mindblowing when you put it the way you put it. It's like how the Bentley Bentayaga (or whatever their new SUV is called) has a bunch of advertisements of it driving with a whole fleet of built up Wranglers to prove it can "go anywhere" or whatever.

>luxury vehicles have plasticc too
I wanted to clarify. What I meant was not the material but the "feeling" of plastic. There's a difference between plastic aesthetic and having plastic cover the sealing. Plastic is only a material. All the wood/fake wood has a lining of rosin or plastic around them but they try to distance themselves from the "plasticy" aesthetic of the 90s hardbody sedans and trucks.
Chrysler does that horribly. Mercedes does it well.

>>
>>16432647
I wasn't referring to the plastic coating over the wood veneer layer over hard base plastic or even vinyl/soft plastics in places. This actually somewhat ties into what I was just talking about regarding marketing but this I don't think the manufactures really have any control over. A lot of people have preconceived notions about manufacturers, especially in how they compare to other manufactures and will often overlook things that don't fit that. It's hard for people with existing bias to confront them. For example the GM vs Mercedes argument gets brought up a lot. Someone that's never been in a Cadillac or Mercedes may get into both and see them as equals. Where as someone that just thinks of Cadillac as common GM and Mercedes as a more out of reach prestigious manufacture may look for all of the plastic in the GM to reinforce their beliefs and all the leather in the Mercedes, even if they're both in reality about 50/50. This is getting into far more subjective territory though.

Yes. This is why I dreamed of doing a complete performance swap like >>16432520

The 2005 Cayennes have the repair cost of a 2015 Cayenne with the added benefit of producing a limited amount of parts compared to normal vehicles. My friend's Cayman (haha is he a grill. lol fgt has a cayman could've gotten an older gen m3 etc etc etc)'s clutch costs around $2000 to replace. Compare that with an old Ranger which if you do the work yourself, you could replace it for a tenth of the price.

Hell the repair costs are miserable for older X5s and X3s let alone the Cayenne. Don't worry anon, I'm right there with you.

It could get into a subjective territory but the study of aesthetics has been immortal and you can make overwhelming claims that can encompass 70-90% of the general populous.

I don't really know how we got from discussing making an offroad vehicle with scrap metal in our backyards to the plastic composition of Cadillacs but it's fun.

GM only makes Cadillacs in order to compete with the Merc, Lexus, higher tier VW-AG group, etc brands that exist. Kinda like how people still buy Lincoln for some reason despite the Ford Flex being more comfortable than half of the newer Lincolns sedans I've been in.
You're also right that brand protection is vital. I remember when Mercedes wanted to bring their E-van over to the US, they relabelled it as the Dodge Durango or something (I can't be bothered to search up the actual titles) in order to not have a "Mercedes" branded work vehicle in North America. That part is not subjective and quite calculated. I think I'm going off topic now too. I can end it by saying again and again:
The only reason how people can sell Ram1500s, Silverado 1500s, or F-150s is brand loyalty. Ain't that a shame when the manufacturers are no longer able to try in the stagnant vehicle environment that America has put itself into?

Subpar car loan economy crash when?

The engine doesn't have to be low on miles at all. Good, scrubbed, 150 000 engines from old Wranglers constantly gets swapped around other Jeeps for cheap enough ALL the time. The cayenne would probably have enough hood space to make it work, too. You would just have to wait. A long time.

If you see on Craiglist, a lot of people have project cars they started 5-20 years ago and never finished because a kid, a job, a cuck, or a fuck got in the way so they have to sell their 50-90% project cars. Unless you have the money, you're going to wait a long time. Otherwise, start making some money and get a mechanic/fabricator that can do almost anything for you.

I paid $1000 for set of 32 DuraTracs and it matches my engine, too :D. Why wouldn't you get those instead?

My trucc does something like 10 000 km per 3 months and most of that is highway dribing. We had this conversation on the last /ORG/.
Ctrl+ F "duratrac" or "cooper" and look at the decisions.

Points being:
>I chose duratracs because i do substantial highway dribing and offroad at my destinations
>duratracs good on road, ice, and fuel. also very quiet
>lots of people don't give a shit about highway or fuel mileage
>choose KO or KO2s if you have dedicated offroading to do. i prefer cooper adventurers but KOx works too
If you're rock climbing or doing some niche offroading (and if you are, you wouldn't be running 33s?) then there are some specialised tyres that you wouldn't be asking /org/ about.

I have a set of KO2s that I ran for one winter and the beginning of a summer. I drive a fair amount of gravel in the summer so the tires got chewed up hard pretty fast. That's the same reason I don't want duratracs for, they're a great tire but they're just not for me. I like the MT/Rs because they're a hard tire and gravel doesn't chew them as fast. Also the asymmetrical is muh cool factor. Not doing too serious of offroading but I deal with clay/gumbo/heavy mud so the KO2s pack up and are useless. I know they're not great on highway but muh airplane sounds.

I've had this truck for 9 years and I still cant decide between SAS'ing it or going long travel. Admittedly long travel makes more sense out here in Las Vegas because SAS is fucking slow in the desert but SAS with 37s would be so much fun too.
>>
>>16439674
Go long travel and beefier, and longer, t-100 front axle shafts. If I lived in the western US I'd definitely run long travel on my 1990 4runner. But living on the east coast solid axle makes sense. I have the Chevy axles I'm gonna run, gotta build them up with new gears and narrow the front axle, then 35s and SAS is in the future...
>>
>>16439701
Long travel would def. be easier and probably cheaper as well. Though I would like to run 35's too but that's probably pushing the limits of the stock Toyota front drivetrain. I have seen 8" supra rear diffs mounted up front on pre-tacoma yotas though. dual cases, long travel, 35's, SWB, and beefed up drivetrain and lockers would make for a pretty fucking well rounded truck.

I went off roading through rocky gap road in Las Vegas once and got down to the wash where the trail is toughest with large boulders and obstacles n such. There was a white crew cab colorado parked at the bottom, nobody around and the truck looked fine. I came back a week later and the same truck was parked 200' up the trail and I ran into the owner when I was leaving. He said he broke at the bottom and his truck was stuck there for a week until he could fix it. Got this bitch for 400 bucks, bought another non blown up 3.0 for 65 bucks and pulled it apart and checked everything and reassembled with all new gaskets. Also removed the ghetto lift and bought some new(ish) 32x12.50 Cooper STT pros for it, also 400 bucks. So I should hopefully have this truck on the road for around 1000-1500 bucks. Then the modding can really begin...

The scrapheap next to mine is my roommate's Suburban 1500. It's mostly the same as mine was stock but it's a half ton.

I'm currently tearing down a 6.5l diesel to swap into mine.

Nothing right now. He's got some repairs to do to his Jeep while I tear down and rebuild the 6.5l. Once the 6.5 is close to ready we're swapping my 5.7 into his burb since his engine is fucked.

He's got my old Dana 50 and SF 14 bolt so those will be going under it eventually.

Is that a Dana 60 with a standard red, ARB red glide plate on your Yuke, btw?

Did he just find a 50 for a good price or is he not going to make it a beasty off roader like yours?
I feel like the Yukon/Burb could handle a 60 pretty easily and aim for it especially if he does some more technical ventures. Also nice of you to give him your current engine.

Pics of process would be greatly appreciated here

I bought a 2000 Dana 50 from an F350 Super Duty for my SAS because it was the only thing I could find at the time.

Once I started tearing down the Dana 50 for regear and 8x6.5 conversion, I found a 95-97 Ford Dana 60 for a decent price and he bought the 50 from me.

The 60 got high steer from Sky, ARB cover, Spartan Locker, 4.88s, and Super Duty calipers. Everything was stripped to bare metal, primed and painted and it got all new bearings, seals, u joints, stub shafts, lockouts, rotors, pads, and ball joints.

His Suburban will be mostly for pulling the Jeep with some occasional light wheeling. Might throw a towing cam in the 350 before we put it in to help with low end.

That's a real machine there. I love the look of those standard red ARB Santa caps. Those differentials are normally too large to place armour over but don't seem to ever need them. I used to run differential armour (it was just a demented, very large L-bracket, actually) on my rear diff until

What's the pricing for two decade old, stripped F-series Dana 50 / 60, btw? I've thought about putting a 50 on my Ranger but I can see like 3 problems with rearranging the driveshaft, steering shaft, and maybe even the transfer case... That'll still be at least a year away before I get rid of my IFS, though.

Murphy Oberlanding Barn Door Suburban here. Wasting some free time @ work planning out the future electrical system. There's already a 120v household power circuit in place. The only thing missing is the Inverter/Charger, an Aux battery bank, Alternators to power everything on the 12v side, and the time to tear everything apart to make sure it still works/hook everything up. Not sure if there is anybody to bounce ideas off of? Looking for input. Also, not sure how to hook up Solar to this...

All in all, this seems VERY similar to Marine electronics...

I highly doubt a 2010 GX460 would be cheaper than a 4Runner. What prices are you turning up?

Anyway, those old GXs are reliable as hell. I might go and convince my mom to get one. Saves you something like double the amount if you were to buy an older X5 of the same year. The downside is that despite being on the exact same platform as the LCs, none of them are manual because muh shift jerk and murica.

95% of drivers hauling fifth wheels aren't using air brakes idiot.

95% of drivers have a secondary loop on their brakes if they fail.

Go on Steel Soldiers, Educate yourself, then talk with me. I lurk every /ORG/. These trucks will kill you if you don't keep up with maintenance or drive them in a way that they weren't meant to be driven. They are not the best off road, but when it comes to hauling shit around, they are the GOAT.

Get a deuce and a half if you aren't willing to get your CDL, it's air over hydraulic. Still have the hydraulic if everything fucks up. Even then though, you are still on a single loop brake system, and with 13000+lbs and a top speed of 50MPH, you have to engine brake carefully, and pray your Parking drum on the T-case is going to hold out.

Not trying to be a bitch to you, but you really need to know what kind of mess you are getting into before you buy one.

Hit up this guy for some orange jews >>16447683 and an axle inspection.

Trip planning is great because you get to build an image of what you will do when you get there. Kinda like looking at hotels for the night or sight-seeing. You don't ever get to see them all or even go to them all but building the image and imagining what the area would look like is a great thought. Then building a better adventure through getting lost is always a great time.

Though, the last time that happened, bae got dehydrated and annoyed so now she's spooped. Hey but at least now we know to bring much more water. Could've killed a moose and drank their blood but noooooo

Also seeing/ imagining the look on wifey's face when something turns out better / worse than expected. Even back in the day when my OWN Colorado LT would get this >>16440396 >>16440486 stuck, I was normally equipped well enough to call a mid-lands friend with a Jeep / winch to tow me out.

Anyway, I'm rambling now. I miss my Ranger already. More pics please, anon. How long do you have now and where's your home base?

>building the image and imagining what the area would look like is a great thought
totally agree.

>Then building a better adventure through getting lost is always a great time.
man i love that. there is no better feeling than that sudden sense of panic that flushes through you when you finally realize you just made a full circle and youre right back where you started in the forest.
i wish i could bottle that feeling up.

i appreciate the ramblings, they come from a good place. i have also coped with a dehydrated bae before. that is not fun.
i have 2 of those giant 5 gallon containers of water now though that i carry everywhere in addition to my cooler of beer.

i need to get some more pics of my truck loaded onto this computer, but here i am in a walmart parking lot right before my last trip picking up a bunch of shit i forgot.

>>16447731

oh, and my homebase is in central va. this trip wont be until march/april so i have quite a bit of time left for planning. lots of things i need to accomplish to my truck before then as well

Dehydration is probably the most maddening because of the incessant complaining and your need to complain too. speaking of which, I also keep weed in the glovebox in case of cabin fever and you need to sleep overnight before you continue trailing. Though, that might be bait depending on your state/ borders. Maybe alcohol is good enough.

The last time, running out of water wasn't actually the issue. It was that it was so hot that 5 days later, it made the water jugs grow fungus and smell bad. So watch out for that.
It's kinda harder to carry water permanently in my vehicle due to winter making it more difficult to just toss two water cooler jugs in the bed of my vehicle. However, there's a cozy feeling of heating up snow on the side of a forest road with a butane portable stove in order to make it drinkable.

Also. Getting lost normally shouldn't hit you until you've swallowed up your pride and said "yupp. that is the fourth time I passed that piece of granite and not the first" after seeing it 3 times before and just lying to yourself that it's a rock that looks like the other ones. Must be someone else's tracks, too...
I think the feeling of panic is more from the fact that you have to keep your pride in front of the person beside you rather than actually getting lost. Nowadays due to cellphone range of my new plan, I pray for a time we can actually "get lost" down a road... Heh.

>>16447820
Don't worry anon. I just had a cross country ski trip I planned like a month ago with baes up north. But instead, I got mad cucked and my Ranger's in the shoppe for a good 5-10 days whilst I deal with this unibody, 7-inch Nisshit R52.

So one day of skiing and a cottage trip instead. THAT is a type of "plan going wrong" that you would want to avoid...

Make sure you post the VA trips, though! I would want to do a double date drive down in the summer if we can since we're looking for somewhere to go anyway.

>>16447798

What a fucking moron. You'll fit in great. All you need to do is shitpost nonsense, accompanied by pictures of a pop star that only forever alone faggots find attractive, type like a literally retarded 5 year old, and get in a hit and run and pretend like you're dealing with insurance to try and cover it up. Then you'll become a regular here.

lol weed is unfortunately no bueno down here in good ol' va, i like alcohol a lot better desu. i certainly see the appeal though and its way more space saving than beer!

didnt think about the fungus but that is a good point. i had a few tanks in my truck last summer and it got pretty hot - water ended up fine though luckily.

being truly lost is the best though, maybe you can get lucky and your phone will die.
down here in my state its pretty easy to lose coverage (which i really appreciate) im sure it wont be like that forever though unfortunately.

ill definitely take plenty of pics while im on the trip, i have quite a few shorter trips planned before then that i can post pics from if people care. and thatd be cool man, if youre ever near the va area give me a shout on here (these threads move slow enough that ims ure ill see it) i have some pretty cool trails local to me that we can go ride on.

good luck with your ranger though is aw your prevous posts about the accident that is really rough id be in bad shape if that was me.

taytay is the corner stone of /org/ niceposting. if you kill him, you'll have to kill me too
>>
>says he's an offroad enthusiast
>doesn't appreciate the range rover or disco

i never did get this

solid axles, great articulation, torquey V8s, fantastic driving position, good transfer cases

so they have a few electrical gremlins, so what. anyone that has driven their rig into deep water knows that gremlins will infiltrate any vehicles.
>>
>>16448307
They don't know offroading vehicles can also be super comfy and gravitate to the "air suspension dirty" meme.
>>
>>16448300
Gladly. Post your retarded face too so I know who to kill.
>>
>>16448287
Prerunners aren't an excuse for factory IFS over a solid axle.
>>
>>16447084
What are you asking for that 44?
>>
>>16448307
im not mad at discos they are incredibly unreliable though and its more than just "a few electrical gremlins." they overheat like crazy, their entire cooling system is garbage, on of the shittiest gear boxes i have ever seen, seats that never work, incrdibly poor quality control (interior bits always falling off or jamming and breaking), there are many other common problems as well.

bottom line is they are great when they work, but that is pretty rare.
>>
>>16448390
Tbh it depends on what you plan to do with it. I don't mind my IFS but I'll admit it has its disadvantages for crawling and mudding, but again I only really take it to the desert, where an independent front can shine with extended-travel control arms

I love both of these, especially the styling. Almost got a disco 10 years ago too! I do admit they are pretty unreliable. One pretty much has to gut it and start anew. Last thing I'd want is a preventable breakdown in the wilderness.

>>16448179
If I take you up on the offer will you be my guide?

Depends on the situation, I'd like to do a coastline cruise starting in texas working my way to Alaska and to the great lakes and down into Florida. If money is tight or I don't want to spend 2 months out on the road then a colorado and Alaska trip are my two prime objectives.

But as of now Im wating for finaces to install a 5.3 into her and pretty much completely go through and replace / reman everything. She's 22 years old with 362k miles and everything I can tell from is original.

And for just basic to vehicle crap.... nothing much really. Just a 2" lift, roof rack, better front bumper and rear bumper with tire carrier also a slim penguin. That or I will buy a 4x8 cargo trailer and use that for sleeping and do some off lander type modifications to the trailer is self like bigger tires and just basic sliders.

What does /ORG/ think of the new taco? I'm getting a new job and I'm planning on buying new with the 6 speed since I can't find any used with the manual. I have a friend with the auto off road and his only complaint is fuel economy. I've also heard some of the electronics are finicky. Also what's a good price right now? I see the off road is at dealers for 37k right now (in AZ).
