Here is what you do:

1. Take the car to a mechanic.
2. Tell him you're interested in fixing the car and that you want a quote on everything he sees wrong with the car.

The quote is going to be ridiculously huge, just say you're going to think about it.

Take the list of what is wrong with the car and then get cheap parts from ebay and do the work yourself.

Be mindful of what kind of money you put into this shitbox because the $500 you paid for it is already it's market value.

Honestly I would keep this car as a parts car and go buy yourself a six cylinder E36 in good condition for around $1000.

Yeah actually I can see this. A fucked up interior like that is a good excuse to rip it all out and go full stage 17+ weight reduction. Fix the rad, renew the brakes and suspension (the brake problem sounds like fucked suspension components), purge the pony shit.
If it were me I'd replace/keep the functional interior components like courtesy lamps and such. I'd just take out the trim, but that's a matter of taste.
And spray the exterior (maybe interior too if you strip it?) with bedliner or some shit to get it all rugged.

you can get a radiator for <$100 on ebay. I think i payed $60-65 for mine and that was 3-4 years ago.

I would do that and then enjoy beating the hell out of it. keep in mind they don't have much power so don't plan on doing many skids on pavement. sure fun in the dirt though.

or like others have said, get a 6 cylinder if you want any real power.

I've got a 95' TI with Bilstein coilovers, H&R Springs, Hotchkis swaybars and a few other mods. Spend the money on the suspension and I kid you not it is one of the best driving cars you'll ever own. You will probably need to replace the control arms and bushings for both the front and back. I've also got 8.5" wide rims in the back and with a clutch kick and some slightly wet pavement you can skid all you want. GL with your TI

I bought an E30 2 weeks ago for $2500. You should have waited.

Brakes are no big deal. Front and rear pad and rotor kit is probably $200. Bleed the lines while you're at it. After the radiator, change 100% of the belts. Probably needs oil and a filter too.

Grab a valve cover gasket too. They're cheap as balls and you're valve lash is almost definitely out of spec.

Buy a torque wrench. You're going to need it.

All of your suspension bushings and front control arms are also probably toasted. That alone costs more than you paid for the car.

Honestly, shedding a torque converter is going to give you like 10% more power to play with at the wheels. If you have access to a scrap car, just rip the whole fucking transmission out and manual swap.

i have a shitbox sierra (2.0 sohc, 1982) for winter driving since the roads are more salt than asphalt during the winter here and it runs just fine desu.

alternator needs new bearings and need new headlight lenses since current ones are fugged but other than that its mechanically sound,only major things ive done in the past 2-3 have been replacing the rear shocks and front springs since they were factory and not up to date anymore.

solid 7.5/10, would recommend for rwd beater, daily drove it for like 7 years
