FWD is a compromise. It trades in performance for cabin space, lower production costs and better gas mileage.

This isn't to say all FWD cars are absolute shit, FWD is perfectly usable up to about 250-300hp and handling has more to do with how the chassis is set up than its drivetrain layout. However, if you're serious about performance, FWD is the worst platform, plain and simple.

Those rallycars were AWD and fwd touring cars are due to rules that states that the racers have to have the same kind of drivetrain as the roadcar. Few rwd roadcars->few rwd racers.
The biggest rally class in Finland is the F-cup. Main reason being that you can partipate with a car that has overrun it´s homologation with FIA. As a result there is a lot of Starlets, AE86s, Mk.2 Escort, BMWs and other older rwd rallycars.
