Looking at purchasing an S2K in the next six or so months.

Which of the hardtop options are the best, if you've any experience with them. I'm assuming just an OEM one because of better visibility, although they are much uglier compared to the Mugen/Seibon hard tops.

What do you guys think of the 2017 Honda Civic Coupes?
Not really fast, but I actually really love how they look. I have yet to see one pimped out.
>>
>>16398966

my #1 complaint with styling today is things to look like they do something but dont
>>
>>16398966
The Si? Should be the fastest one yet. Even the normal 10th gens are faster than the 9th gen Si which is pretty crazy but I guess that's the advantage of it being the first factory turbo model.
>>
>>16398984
I suppose. I feel like these cars would look really cool though if you lowered it, threw a low spoiler on it and got a slightly more aggressive body kit. They look fun as fuck to cruise around in, but yeah.
>>
>>16398986
I forgot they had an Si model. THAT would be rad.
>>
>>16398990
With the proper aesthetics coming from a proper kit I'll agree it has a good silhouette
>>
>>16398992
It'll be out sometime 2017. Type R too which is even better and it's a hatch exclusive. 10th gen looks best in hatch form in my opinion. 9th looked great in all forms but I can appreciate the much bigger hood of the 10th. Civic engine bays looked cramped as fuck ever since 8th gen came out.
>>
>>16396560

>>
>>16398986

>>
>>16399016
It doesn't look too much faster but I guess that's a sign that the new Si is gonna be crazy.
>>
>>16399062
Yeah i haven't looked into it much but some of the 9th gen pages I'm on say it's faster others say it isn't so idk I still prefer the look of the 9th gen anyway.
Wish they went with the bigger engine in the new Si though heard it's just going to be the 1.5T
>>
>>16399079
Yeah I don't see the K going anywhere for enthusiasts. Hondata's youtube channel has some videos of them head to head. 10th basically just has more torque while the 9th has more power.

The CVT probably gives it an advantage too. Probably much closer if they used a manual version.
>>
>>16398899

Blog:

So it's been a minute since I've posted something. I bought an orange CRX with a carbon fiber hood at the beginning of the month. I redid the interior and electrical, and then took a break. Since I'm keeping the hood, I decided to swap the hood and nose off of my red car. Being that they were red, I decided to spend 36 dollars on amazon and buy some vinyl to wrap them in. These are the results. I'm not completely happy with it but it's good enough to sell and at least it's not red.

As a side bonus, I found out the drivers side headlight bucket was perfect so I swapped the broken one I had on it and now have an unbroken set.

Going up for sale pretty soon

That's not too bad. I'm thinking my hatch would look good with a black hood, roof, and tailgate. Dunno if I'd ever try it though.
>>
>>16405562

It's not worth the money/effort to do to your personal car. It's just my opinion from doing it

This was just a situation where I didn't have a choice and I just want to sell it.
>>
>>16405565
Ah gotcha. The paint overall on mine is pretty shitty. It's better than what would have been badly faded Milano Red but it's covered in orange peel, runs, and the front end is a darker shade of red than the rest.

It'll be a long while before I start messing with paint, though.
>>
>>16405571

otherwise just pay n spray

What do you mean? The car itself? Or the vinyl?

Car is completely rust free, I redid all the electrical to OEM spec, I repaired the door plastics with fiberglass (although there's a hairline crack that popped up)

I'd say only major downsides are that the car was painted with sub par effort and the sunroof was sealed up and deleted.

Otherwise everything is good and the swap is healthy and low miles.

D16a1 with good trans and 17k on rebuild (allegedly)

I just don't want it because I have another 1985 CRX already and it has a b18c1 swap

When you get it, make sure that it hasnt bubbled underneath. I'm sure you know this but it's a composite wing with a metal substructure and bubbling means it has been compromised. Also I'd recommend going out and getting yourself some kiwi black shoe polish. I know it sounds insane but it'll really help restore the look of it.

Last tip, even if you have all the mounting hardware, use 3m mounting tape to seal off the outside of the wing so water doesn't get trapped and rust your hatch to shit

Just like I can get a beater teggy for 1-2k easy but a really clean GSR is going to run you 5-6k. Expect to spend over 30k for a type R (Yes 30,000 dollars)

It's fun if you initiate it but not as fun initiating over steer. Under steering is scarier since it's harder or impossible to correct but it's easier on you in a way that you see what you're about to hit. Over steer is scary for non-skilled drivers and it's also scary in a way that you don't know what you're going to hit when youre backwards in the spin.

>>16407876
It's honestly not worth 5,300. Like I said, 3k and under is about the sweet spot. They just aren't modern/fast enough to be worth more.

2nd gen is double wishbone and just a much better car as far as handling goes, albeit with slight weight increases.

In my opinion the best route to go right now is to pick up an EM2 if you like the styling, as they are just starting to get very cheap, and they arent very popular, yet offer airbags and can be k swapped

EM2 isn't that popular. It's just that spot in the market where you get relatively modern for not a lot of money. Great for swaps because I've seen many in nice shape with dead transmissions, although my autotragic has 171k miles on it and its fine.

In terms of handling, sure but unless you are going to track it it's not going to matter much.

Airbags save 2,000 lives in the US each year according to NHTSA. Feel free to disable yours but at least your girlfriend will be protected and you won't have that on your conscience. Seat belts and auto tensioners save lives, period. However, you are an adult and you can make your own decisions.
>>
>>16407980
>implying I have a girlfriend
Do you really think that highly of me?
Anyways, I always use a seatbelt. That's what saved my sorry ass, not the airbag that didn't deploy.
On a different note, how would one fix the bad geometry in the EM2? F-for uh, scientific r-reasons...

AT&T is the only available ISP in my apartment complex which sucks because since they know they're a monopoly here, they only offer basic 750kb/s DSL at over a hundred bucks a month with a 150GB data limit. Might go as far as to cut it off entirely and tell everyone in the house to use their own unlimited 500kb/s Wi-Fi hotspot instead. I only pay 25 bucks extra to get 4G LTE tethering. I used about 160GB in one night downloading all those AC games. kek

>>

>>16409461
Here's what I do know about them. Shitty attempt at explaining.

>apparently voltage controlled
>has a little valve that opens and closes
>ECU sends out different voltages so it knows how much to open or close
>Basically keeps the idle high enough so the car doesn't shut off due to lack of air coming in.

As far a I know, vacuum leaks can cause the IACV to constantly open and close because it's attempting to get the idle right.

Here's the dual monitor setup, by the way.

>tfw got these two matching monitors for $60 on Craigslist
>>
>>16409487
Noice.
They're both Hondas, even though the B-series is DOHC, they should be relatively similar.
>>
>>16409513
I have a D series too (D16A) but I did see a trashed D17 sitting in my buddy's garage so they should be similar. Does the car stay on at all or do you gotta give it throttle to keep it running?
>>
>>16409419
Yes i will check that. I drive past it everyday while it sits in the lot and the guy selling it is a mechanic and pretty nice. He doesnt mind me taking it to get inspected before i buy it. New rotors and calipers will probably cost a few hundred but thats bad. Im sure i will have to replace the copper in the starter soon.
>>
>>16409378
Find that damned p. steering leak, oil change, new rotors, hawk pads, service rear drums, bleed brakes, fix engine oil sweat, maybe touch up exteropr like wax, repaint trim, smoothen out wing mirrors
>>
>>16409519
I thought you had an SI. The hatch is still cool regardless.

It's kinda funny, there's 2 parts to the problem.
Part one is after starting. The car will idle around 1200, then climb to 1700. The CEL will blink for a split second, and the rpm will drop back to 1200. During this, the tachometer works, and it will go through the rev range without issue.

After a minute or two of this, part 2 begins. The tach stops working drops to 0, and the car begins a steady idle. The CEL is solid during this, and trying to give the car gas causes it to sputter and almost die.

I haven't seen any other EM2 with this problem, which doesn't help my inexperience.
>>
>>16409545
It's kind of an Si at this point. Stock engine was a D15B8 with 70 horsepower. Current engine one of the nine previous owners swapped in is a D16A with around 125ish horsepower which is similar output to the D16Z6 the fifth gen Si had. The Si at the time also had SOHC unfortunately. Civics in the US didn't get their first DOHC until the EM1. Putting a B16A in would be pretty damn cool, though.

I'm not positive but it could be the MAP sensor or IACV, or even both. Since your car is OBD2 you could pick up one of those cheap bluetooth adapters you can plug into your car and use the Torque phone app to check what the CEL is for.

I do know that if I unplug my MAP sensor while my engine is running it'll cut the car off entirely. If I unplug the IACV the idle drops super low and trying to accelerate with it unplugged is extremely rough.

Try unplugging the IACV with the car running and plug it back in. Should give you an idea if it's actually working or not.
>>
>>16409565
I'll try that, thanks.

125hp in a chassis that light should be exhilarating, no?
>>
>>16409574
Yeah it's pretty fun. A lot other guys around here have more power but I never have issues with accelerating or anything. It's still lacking on the highway but I'm rarely on the highway anyway.
>>
>>16409590
That makes me excited for when the civic is running again, can't wait to see what kind of shenanigans I can pull with it. I've ridden in an SI of my civic's year, and it seemed pretty quick, no clue how mine will compare though,.
>>
>>16409632
The goddamn trip keeps coming off
>>
>>16409632
Says it has around 117hp but it revs pretty high just like mine so it can still be pretty fun.

The 7th gen Si was one of the very first ones to have a K series engine which they still use in the newer Civics.

I think the new Type R still uses a K if I'm not mistaken?
>>
>>16409656
No, it wasn't a K series, only the hatchbacks have them.
I did a little more research, the Civic SI (coupe, canada exclusive) had 127 hp, but it says mine is making 140hp. That can't be right, can it?
>>
>>16409703
Ohh OK I was going by USDM stuff. Honda always keeps the good shit away from the US.

The 7th gen is a weird one. There's so many models for that generation it's hard to keep up with what is what.
>>
>>16409722
If you want a good D-17-A, EM2s are dirt cheap here.
I recommend doing some research though, I'm not 100% sure if I'm right.
>>
>>16404560
i live in az and the prices have been going up on them
>>
>>16409750
I'll probably end up B swapping my car one day. I'd love to make an SiR-II (top spec fifth gen hatch) clone but those B16 engines are pricey so it'd take a lot of saving. Really the cheapest way is to get a B20 engine from a CRV. They make 150 horsepower stock which would be pretty crazy.

I think I'd miss my 30+ city MPG though. It keeps a ton of money in my pocket for work. I'd rarely take advantage of that extra power too. Also don't wanna get rid of the D series transmission I bought brand new at the start of 2016.
>>
>>16409767
If I remember correctly, they did make a DOHC D-series at one point. It should get similar performance to a B-series.
>>
>>16409783
Yep I believe that's the DOHC ZC engine. My buddy has the SOHC version of it. My current engine is almost as good but I need to get a tune eventually to wake it up. Right now it won't allow me to go past 106mph because of fuel cut off.

I know if I dedicate a bit to it I could get all the money I'd need to pick up any engine I want. The current one is almost perfect and a lot has been done to it this year so I don't want to let it go for a while. Had the timing belt and head gasket changed only two months ago.

happy new years international and east coast /hg/senpai.

some automative goals for 2017 are:
-make the EF hatch reliable enough to be a daily driver (though my goal is not for it to be)
- finish the tsx exterior mods (4pc body kit paint and install)
-learn to weld
-build up my tool collection (get air tools)

general life goals:
- move into an apt with gf
- graduate
- start full time career
- stay healthy and work out more
- hike and travel
>>
>>16409840
No need to be worried, they're all built to go that fast. I got the Echo to 110 (185kmh) once.
>>16409817
Yeah, no point in swapping it out if it recently had work. What kind of stuff can you do to get more power out of it?
>>
>>16409840
It's surprisingly stable but that maybe because of the aftermarket suspension and stuff. Only place I can really do it is on the interstate.

I took my old fifth gen auto sedan to 112 but had to stop because cars. It got a bit sketchy. That car is much much slower than the hatch though. Acceleration is really really sluggish.

https://youtu.be/1sogy3whI88?t=44

If you listen around 1:38 you can hear the car stopping me from going any faster. I could maybe get to 120+ if I had that tuned out. I need to try it again with the new exhaust and see how it sounds. Hell my buddy with the SOHC ZC took his to 145ish. Now THAT sounds scary. I need to ride along to see how it feels.

Nah I had plenty more RPM left to go faster but the ECU doesn't think I do so it stops me from going faster. I haven't looked too much into it but I think it still thinks I have 70hp.

I got a new exhaust at the start of December. Yonaka catback for around $280. It's much more subtle sounding. The old one was booger welded into one big piece (including the header) and had to be cut in half just to be removed from the car. Previous owner shit that I'm glad to be rid of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D54TSvz0xxM&t

I highly recommend it if you're looking for a good bang for the buck exhaust.

I think I'll give it a shot myself sometime. I've been wanting to learn soldering anyway and that's a pretty good way to start.

>>16410391
I think in my case I got a leak somewhere that keeps my idle high. Even a brand new IACV doesn't fix it.
>>
>>16410392
Id start with something simple first like one of those kits from china for an LED christmas tree or something. Do a couple of those for like 1 dollar each and when you feel confident give it a go. You can use crome and flash it for free.

For your leak, take a look at common places: intake manifold gasket, injector o rings, throttle body gasket
>>
>>16410403
I'm thinking it's something simple like an open nipple. I gotta take a look if I remember to. The weather determines whether or not it'll bounce up and down all day or stay steady so yeah.

Amazingly there's still a Radio Shack here and I know they're going pretty hard on babby's first soldering kits so that's a good start.

no problem homie

The more experience you get, the better you'll be. The important thing for soldering really is knowing when solder is wetting the metal.

If you have experience with TIG welding you'll know what I mean, otherwise let me put it like this:

As you heat the surface of the PCB (or a wire for that matter) and a little bit of solder, youll see the solder sort of absorb into the surface. When it reaches that point, you'll be in business. If it doesn't absorb into the surface, you've either got contamination on the surface or the surface isn't hot enough yet.

Flux facilitates good wetting, which is why the flux pen is needed. You can get flux core solder, but it comes in really large diameter and it's a pain in the ass to use. The silver bearing stuff I linked is nice because it is very fine, however it doesn't have flux in it, so you'll want the pen.

Common mistakes are going to be using too much solder, heating the target area or component for too long, and cold solder joints (solder didnt wet the surface)
