Actually, Kia repeatedly outdoes Hyundai in quality and reliability surveys as well as being much sportier/more fun to drive than their Hyundai counterparts. Before Hyundai gained controlling interest in Kia in 2006, all Kia's were based on mazda's and shared engines, chassis's and driving dynamics with them.
Being owned by Hyundai has changed the chassis's and engines they use but it hasn't dampened their commitment to quality, reliability, or fun.

Hyundai just positions itself more upmarket than Kia despite repeatedly doing worse.

Maybe, but it's all going to be worse quality stuff. (Heat won't be as quick to come on, screen will be crappy, etc.)

That said if you want the most features for the least money, Kia is the way to go.
