E92 335i. Best BMW up there with the E46 M3/M2 although it's easily the most reliable of the 3.
1 series hatch fammo. They're nice and cheap but dont really perform, so don't expect a yurotofu. They run between £3-9k depending on condition for the previous gen and I know someone who has one, he says its pretty reliable. I think his is an 05 diesel, he got it last year and I don't think he's had problems

Depends on what kind of reliability. For drivetrain anything pre OBD2 that doesn't have a V engine. For electronics early OBD2 cars are a bit easier to deal with, but then you have an onslaught of cooling problems.

also replace all the hoses and the thermostat. it's a big investment but it dramatically increases reliability
