What's the difference between a wing and a spoiler?

Visually how can you tell if it's a wing or spoiler?

Wing create downforce.
>>
>>16377321
That's a spoiler.
>>
A wing creates downforce, while a spoiler 'spoils' the airflow around the back end, negating lift at high speeds.
>>
>>16377309
That there is a wing

This is a spoiler

Wing
>increases drag
>increases downforce
>reduces efficiency

Spoiler

this

Most "wings" you see on road cars are actually spoilers, designed to look like a wing. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at the bottom of the "wing". If its shaped like the top of an aircraft wing, its a wing. If not, its a spoiler.
>>
I always thought wings were obvious....well they look like wings. They're gigantic, point out from the two connections.

Spoilers were uniform and connected directly to the body, including the tips so they don't point out.

Like a Mk IV Supra's stock spoiler. That's a spoiler. Now imagine a riced out one. That's a wing.

Well, that's what I always assumed. I'm more than likely wrong.
>>
all wings are spoilers,

however not all spoilers are wings

Not OP but have a stupid question. Are wings needed for cars that will only see highway? I know it's useful for track cars.

not really important
except to place the centre on drag behind the centre of mass
or make sure the rear tires have enough grip

how about visually.

can people post examples of what a wing looks like and a spoiler?

and just because ricers suddenly forget how air works when the concept is applied to a car

One wings it, like your dad without a condom one night.

One spoils it, like you being conceived.

a spoiler "spoils" air flow to reduce lift

a wing generates lift

a splitter is a spoiler. a canard is a wing.
>>
>>16377358
Spoilers can actually result in a net increase in downforce by negating a lift effect. They're don't provide outright downforce, that's true, but they can add a load.
>>
>>16377789
>Bonneville land speed trials
>drag racing
Pick one. People have been doing speed trials like that ever since cars where a thing. The parachute is removable anyways, and you really need one at the F40's top speed.
>>
>>16377837
but that's meaningless.
the spoiler is reducing lift and drag, nothing more.

So unless you have a diffuser and a flat bottom, you're never going to generate net downforce with just a spoiler.
>>
>>16377503
>except to place the centre of drag behind the centre of mass
What did he mean by this?

>>16377477
No, a wing is completely fucking useless for highway queens.
>>
>>16377833
>a wing generates lift
Why would you ever need this on a car?
>>
>>16377883
Because the force of the lift is in the direction of the ground.
>>
>>16377883
Lift towards the ground = downforce.
>>
>>16377309
A wing is essentially a 2+ piece spoiler.

>>16377309
Wing deflects air flow and generates a force. Air flows around both surfaces.

Spoiler detaches flow from a surface, for example at the back of the car, preventing lift being created. It creates a turbulent flow. Also increases drag. Air generally flows only around one surface.
